Exercises DO NOT fix poor habits (posture!)

A gross misconception is the belief that exercises will somehow reverse poor habits. This could not be further form the truth.
Poor habits (i.e lack of conscious effort) which are in constant effect throughout the day, could IMPOSSIBLY be reversed by 2-3 minutes once per day with antagonistic exercises. It would be like adding two bricks, then completely breaking down the wall, and then again add two new bricks, expecting the wall to have progress. Of course, naturally, it will not.
Therefore, we need both good habits (conscious effort) AND proper exercises to reverse long standing dysfunction!
Subconscious problems, on the other hand, such as a lateral tilt or rotation caused as a secondary effect due to focal instability, may definitely be reversed by proper exercises, in many circumstances.
Thus we have to know whether we are treating HABITS or COMPENSATIONS! Hope this makes sense. Very important topic!

Very interesting explanation. I stumbled across a similar person who shared the same viewpoints as you, and I do share them myself. Having tried many different types of corrective exercises for my own issues, I realized that if I don't change my movement habits during the day, the exercises are COMPLETELY useless. Having said that, I do think that corrective exercises help us become a little more aware of what is good movement and what is bad movement, but they are not the be all end all to fixing any MSK injuries. Habits are really, the main source to attack. Also, when I read your articles, I definitely agree that people do want a quick fix to their problems. The quickest "Fixes" are medicine, corrective exercises, manual therapy, and sometimes surgery. They have their places in the rehab program, but none of these mean anything if you don't fix what you do in the other 22-23 hours of the day.

I remember consciously starting to tuck my pelvis in because I was self aware of my anterior pelvic tilt- and ended up internalizing the tucking to such a degree that I'm now dealing with the consequences of posterior pelvic tilt. This, to me, is all the evidence I need to know that it absolutely is a matter of making an active decision and integrating it into the subconscious, and a neuromuscular connection.

Good point. I find it easier to not slouch after laying on my back on a swiss ball. Presumably it relaxes the shortened muscles up front.

What shook me up to this was considering that the definition of posture is the shape you predominantly inhabit. So changing the posture is about changing the shape your predominantly in - not so much supplemental exercises. Finding the proper neutral when you're proprioceptive baseline is way off is super difficult, and trying to keep a good posture without forcing or clenching it is really tough...

Agreed. I do believe that posture is about exercising the brain rather than the muscles. Poor posture in the general population is more about a subpar neuromuscular connection. I believe one must train the brain by enforcing a new, more beneficial habit than the older one when it comes to posture. Obviously if you have a severe spinal case like scoliosis, one needs a much more serious and rigorous intervention, but the poor posture plaguing the modernized world is about training the brain. Just a view i currently hold on this subject.

You can set timer to go off every 20 minutes to check posture or to stand up...there are also tools like 'upright posture necklace' that you wear and it buzzes everytime you slouch forward

I don't like those. It is really not that hard to motivate oneself to check their habits. Don't rely on support wheels

I know this sounds silly but I realized that I never flex my toes at all. I don’t know if it’s because I’m flat footed and have poor circulation in extremities or what. But when standing straight up am I supposed to clinch the ground with my toes? What about when walking and running?

more you want to do posture exercises ..and more you want to make something correct you put the tension into everything and makes you and your muscles into the stress. I saw a lot videos on yt about posture..it made me feel better for some time..and now..my total back muscles are getting worse..the pain is increasing

I have heard so many different things about posture from so many different professionals both on youtube, and in clinics. I have found that for me, forcing my posture has made me worse. I started with just neck pain, i became obsessed with posture. I began being hyper conscious about my posture and forcing myself more upright all day. Now my whole back is a mess, and I have tons of trigger points. During this time I was also doing countless postural exercises. Overtime my posture did get significantly more upright, but my back pain worsened. When I decided to let myself slump again I started to feel relief. I have a hard time finding balance as I have OCD, but I found forced posture to be ineffective for pain relief in my case.
@MSKNeurology
@MSKNeurology 3 года назад
OCD and bracing is your problem, not the posture. You need to learn to hold the posture without clenching up. It's possible, but sadly very difficult for this patient group.

@Isak Tougaard have you been able to accomplish this new state of relaxation yourself? I followed along with a couple youtube videos of nidra yoga last night. @@MSKNeurology I mean....how is this how billions of people live every day? Billions of people aren't holding good posture "actively without clenching". They have no pain (often with bad posture) but we sufferers have horrible pain whether we get into passive good posture, active good posture, exercises, stretches, etc. "You need to learn to hold the posture without clenching up. It's possible, but sadly very difficult" That's the most depressing thing I've ever read and leaves me feeling like I'll be in pain until I die.

I tend to disagree. I'm training calisthenics from 4 weeks now. I'm paying much attention to technique of the scapula and I can say I have huge improvements. And that is without eve thinking about fixing my posture. But there is not a single person who can stay upfront all day without slouching even a little bit. That is phisically impossible
