An ACL tear is a traumatic rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee often caused by a noncontact mechanism such as landing from a jump or planting the foot to change directions. You often need surgery to restore ability to the knee and return to physically demanding sports and exercise. Still, some exercises for an ACL tear can be helpful to help you regain motion and strength of the knee, even before you have ACL reconstruction surgery.
Please note: I don't respond to questions and requests for specific medical advice left in the comments to my videos. I receive too many to keep up (several hundred per week), and legally I can't offer specific medical advice to people who aren't my patients (see below). If you want to ask a question about a specific injury you have, leave it in the comments below, and I might answer it in an upcoming Ask Dr. Geier video. If you need more detailed information on your injury, go to my Resources page: www.drdavidgei...

Great video Dr. Geier! I am a 38 year old podiatrist that just tore my ACL playing soccer one week ago. I haven't really had to use crutches though because my pain level hasn't been very high. Every day I have been able to walk a little better and better. I have noticed, being about 1 week out from injury my swelling is just as bad or worse than it was after 1 or 2 days... probably because I am walking as much as I am. I was happy to find this video, because I knew I needed to get my ROM back but I didn't really know when I should start doing it. It sounds like there isn't really a bad time to start, just don't push too hard. I have been focusing on Isometric exercises for my quads and trying to walk my stairs for strength... go down the stairs is much harder! It sounds like the name of the game is getting quads as strong as possible and getting full flexibility and ROM back, and then getting surgery when I can is the way to go. I just have to wait on my HMO to give my all my referrals. Thanks for all the content! It's super helpful!

Hi Clayton, how did these types of exercises work out for you? It sounds like you had the exact same experience I am going through. Also torn ACL from soccer (need to get MRI later this week to confirm but my orthopedic looked at it and was like yep, probably your ACL) and I had almost no pain from my injury (I would put it at a 2 or 3 out of 10) but my range of motion has been atrocious even 2 weeks after the injury. Getting my foot high enough to go up the stairs is a challenge. Like you said, swelling is way worse now than within the first day or two of the injury. I don't know a lot about anatomy but my guess is getting my swelling down is going to be key to getting that range of motion back so I don't hobble around looking like a 90 year old.

Currently on a ACL tear approx 50% is what the doctors note stated, they told me since I’m only 23 years of age they chose the non Surgical route and Rehab was better although i mentioned to the doctor that I was into extreme sports and looking to make a career out of it. The initial tear was a walk in the park to be honest lol it sounds crazy but I literally twisted my knee upon landing from about 5 ft and it left my knee swollen for a few days with zero pain and I was able to walk shortly after with full range of motion Currently on month 6 without acl reconstruction and have fully been engaged into my sport although I’m taking all the precautions in the world the prevent the accident from occurring again

Hi John, Im curious how you have been doing with your recovery? I wish the best. I'm at the 6 months stage, but essentially have no ACL so the doc says its just a matter of time before I make the wrong manouver and it blows out. Thing is it feels great, but, hard to say what would happen if I got hit there..

You are the best Thank you so much for your videos very helpful for me for sure. I broke my tibia and fibula doing a run slide from my studio to another room hitting my oak taboret, found out I could not walk on that leg. Thought it was hurt only. When I discovered I could not walk on it I tried to get around my new cabinet and cut my muscles and ACL on the other foot on the sharp point on the bottom of the new cabinet. Opted for no surgery on anything. Just waited for everything to heal naturally with a cast and a boot. Your exercises are helping me tremendously!

Those exercises helped me perhaps early with my ACL cut. I had to use my hands to move that leg for a good while. The doctor did nothing so I did everything I could to get back to normal. It definitely took some time for sure but I kept pushing through and believed in my body. And may I never do this again. You have got to have a strong faith system.

I had an ACL Reconstruction Surgery 1 month ago using Hamstring graft. I was feeling OK, and so started walking with a gentle limp. However, once I was trying to pick up something from the floor and had a massive stretch on my hamstring. I also heard a cracking sound. My mobility is still the same as my level before this incident. However, it feels a bit strained and I observe a gentle bump and swelling behind the knee area. Could you suggest me if it's normal or may it heal naturally?

It does help but with very light weight! I had a really bad wipe out walking down a muddy hill "did the Matrix move" and I couldn't even squat ass to the grass like I normally did! It's been 4+ months since that accident and "slowly" starting to squat 20lbs per/side and adding 5-10lbs for every 2 sets documenting each set so I know what is safe or not! It's a very slowwwwwww recovery but better doing light squats than nothing right!
@whitebutginger
@whitebutginger 2 года назад
@@peterwho9380 I didn't even bother with light weight, my PT/Physio wanted me going into surgery at strong as possible. We worked super hard to get mobility back within a week or two of the rupture then went straight into heavy volume work on back squat, just adding in the bench and performing a 'box squat' for support. I was hitting PBs 2 weeks before surgery!
