One of the most-common conditions that I treat as a physical therapist is diastasis recti (DR). This is a condition that affects up to 60% of women either during pregnancy or postpartum. Fortunately, there’s a lot that exercise can do to help this condition if done correctly. Today I wanted to share with you 3 ab exercises you should definitely NOT do with a DR, and what you should do instead to tone your abs and help heal this separation.
ALL-NEW - Postpartum abs workout program designed specifically to flatten your stomach and heal diastasis recti! See my wife's powerful story and get yours today at this link: mommytummyfix.com/

** As always - GET CLEARANCE FROM YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING THIS OR ANY WORKOUT PROGRAM. 6 weeks post-partum is the most generally-accepted “safe time” to resume some of these activities, but it’s always best to have your doctor’s clearance for your own unique situation. **
What is a diastasis recti?
Diastasis recti is a separation of the two halves of your forward-most abdominal muscle - the rectus abdominis.
In instances of strenuous pressure on the abdomen and abdominal cavity the connective tissue between the halves of the rectus abdominis can be stretched, pulled, and eventually even separate. This is what we refer to as a “diastasis recti”.
How do you get a diastasis recti?
Any condition that causes increased pressure and strain on the anterior abdominal wall has potential to cause the diastasis condition. The most-common is pregnancy; the growing fetus and uterus put stress on the abdominal wall which is intensified with aggressive muscle contractions during childbirth. Other causes can include excess belly fat, intense core workouts involving sit ups and crunches, and even the flu (vomiting and/or forceful coughing).
Which exercises should I avoid with diastasis recti?
You should avoid any exercise that forcefully contracts your rectus abdominis against gravity. Again, this muscle is the primary “flexor” of your core and is active in activities such as sit ups and crunches.
Best exercises for diastasis recti?
The best exercises for a diastasis recti condition are those that activate your deepest abdominal layer, the transverse abdominis (TA). This muscle runs from your lower back around your sides and connects into this same connective tissue that has been separated. This muscle’s primary action is to “draw everything in” and pull your belly button in towards your spine. Activating this muscle and performing this motion will help to bring the two separated halves of the rectus abdominis closer together and “close the gap”
EXERCISES TO AVOID WITH DIASTASIS RECTI - AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
DON’T do ab crunches
Ab crunches contract the upper half of the transverse abdominis muscle forcefully against gravity. This focused contraction can pull the two halves of the muscle further apart and put more strain on this area.
DO abdominal bracing/hollowing
Instead, try some stomach vacuums. This is a great exercise to really activate the transverse abdominis and bring the two halves of the rectus closer together.
DON’T do sit ups
Again - a forceful contraction of the rectus abdominis muscle that’s even MORE aggressive than a crunch. It not only contracts the rectus against gravity, but it actually does it against a much greater range of motion. Big no no.
DO dying bugs
Dying bugs are a great way to activate a ton of abdominal muscles with specific emphasis on the TA while not moving the trunk through much motion.
DON’T do planks
Planks are actually one of my favorite core exercises. They activate a ton of core muscles and can be super effective. The thing I don’t like about planks for a DR condition is that it’s a forceful contraction of your RA agains gravity, but you’ve also got the weight of all your internal organs hanging out on the already-weakened anterior abdominal wall.
DO side planks
The solution is side planks. Simply by rotating your forward plank into a side plank we take stress off the anterior wall and shift it to the lateral wall. It’s also easier to activate the TA (“draw it in”) while holding a side plank.
Controlled and consistent contraction of the transverse abdominis muscle is crucial to helping minimize your abdominal gap and help you get your stomach back to “normal”.

I really appreciate how thorough you are in the notes under the video. A lot of content creators try to entice you to watch the entire video by leaving the most vital information out of the description. But your attention to detail and commitment to educating your viewers in both the video and the description is much more effective in motivating me to engage with your content! Thank you so much, this was really helpful.

I'm one of those guys with a big belly. I don't drink alcohol so I can't call it a "Beer" belly. I't's just years of neglect and over eating. I was OBVIOUSLY doing the wrong exercises. My problem was getting worse and now I know why. I needed a name of the ailment and the RIGHT exercises. Great explanations and great sidekick. (Will a "Belly band" provide temporary help in the mean time?) Thank you Jared!

Glad I ran across this! I'm a guy that's lifted for for over 20yrs and after a 5+yr layoff and almost 45 now I've tried to start lifting again and discovered my diastasis recti about a month into training so most of that's on hold now. I've been trying to tighten everything for the past few weeks, not just pulling in. The hardest part is just remembering to stay tight during work and regular daily activities. If I can fix this they say it could be a major reason for my back pain too which would be amazing. Good luck everyone!

Now, this is something that all personal trainers should know about. I started back in the gym early this year after a 20 year hiatus. Thank you! It’s great to see this info from a PT. I’m perplexed, because it seems I barely had DR immediately postpartum, but now 15 months later I have the coning and “popped belly button” in certain positions (like plank, etc). Have you seen anyone who has regressed like this? I’m not having pain, so am not thinking umbilical hernia at this point 😕
@toneandtighten
@toneandtighten 5 лет назад
Hi Ginger! Actually yours is not an uncommon report. Please don't take this personally, but oftentimes it can take 6-12 months to lose all the fat a woman gains during pregnancy. It may not have been noticeable at first, but as you've slimmed back down it can become more apparent. Just stay consistent with the right exercises and you should start to see some improvement. I just posted this vid this week - might be a great place to start! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ltoueUICjB8.html Good luck!

And also, it was four years ago... so...crossing my fingers!!. I will definitely talk to my gynecologist about all this, as well. As a male I am one of the few with DR. I bought a exercise machine called the Torso Track and was holding a plank like move at full extension and I got DR all at once 20 years ago. The pain has gone away but the belly still bulges. I recently started an exercise program to flatten it and was doing, you guessed it, sit ups, so I am glad I found this video! I will start these exercises tomorrow. Thanks!!!!!.

Congrats on the new little one, Batina888! I would not do these at 7 months; the first two trimesters yes but I'm afraid you're too far along now. Simple exercises like walking and elliptical are recommended. Bodyweight resistance and light weights are also okay.

Hello, I really appreciate this video. After my last child two years ago, I went to PT where they said I had DR and it was measuring at 5 fingers! They had me use a sheet to pull the muscles together this created a weird pooch almost as if everything went to that area. I started looking 5 months pregnant! The DR did change to like a 3 finger measurement. My question is do you think this would help with that huge pooch (it is like lower middle abdomen)? I just found out we are expecting again. Can these exercises be done for someone in the first trimester?

@toneandtighten
@toneandtighten 5 лет назад
Great question, Sha! Depends on if you have this diastasis condition or not. If it's there, avoid them until it's closed. If it's not, I would still start with these exercise first and then work into the more "typical" exercises after 2-3 weeks of these. Hope that helps, and thanks for you kind words!

Thank you for the exercise tips! I never had a big belly but I went from working out pretty often to not so much(being I was in nursing school). My anterior pelvic tilt seemed to get worse from sitting so much while in class and studying. Do you think that would cause the DR? My abs now have gotten really strong but my middle still pooches out. Will that ever go away? BTW I'm a 52 year old man.

Do you recommend just doing lower abdominal excises? And avoiding the ones that work your upper abs? Thanks so much for this video!
@toneandtighten
@toneandtighten 5 лет назад
Great question, londongirle3. Typically the diastasis condition affects women above the belly button, so typically lower ab work is safer. However, don't think of it as "upper" and "lower"... think of it as avoiding a contraction in the rectus abdominis and trying to contract the transverse abdominis. Hope that helps!
@jenniferarp9771
@jenniferarp9771 5 лет назад
How long should these be done until you can add back some of the other exercises working the upper ab area!
@toneandtighten
@toneandtighten 5 лет назад
Great question, Jennifer! That's going to be a little different for everyone depending on your consistency and rate of healing. As you check your diastasis (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LpsvIeGBKuk.html) you should find the gap "narrowing" and "becoming firmer". When you're pleased with your results/progress feel free to re-include some of the more aggressive RA muscle contractions. Hope that helps!

If done regularly then how long would it take to reach flat belly
@toneandtighten
@toneandtighten 4 года назад
A "flat belly" is more dependent on your diet and activity. These exercises will help to flatten the muscles in your stomach, but should be done in addition to other core training. 6-8 weeks to see improvement with these exercises and clean eating.

When I go to gym which equipment should I not use ?
@toneandtighten
@toneandtighten 5 лет назад
MultiApple1982 - Great question! The only equipment that I would recommend not using is anything that would make you crunch your abs (some gyms have sit-up machines or ab machines that are similar to performing a sit-up). All the other equipment should be just fine! Just be sure to activate your core muscles (suck your belly button into your spine) with every exercise to really help keep your core strong. Good luck!
