Yeah, there were two cases that this group of shamans had to resolve, and I felt the first case could have been used for the opening credits just to introduce the characters (and not take up the first half of the movie). Also got confused near the end regarding why that grave location was significant. But I would still recommend.

I am a big South Korean horror fan so of course I liked this film. You are spot on about there being two parts. They could have used a little more work in the editing. I Really like your reviews and in the process of going back and watching all of them. Thanks.

Caught this one in theaters a while back, generally I enjoyed it, especially the shaman drumming scenes, but it was a bit convoluted. Might try and get my korean friend to watch it with me, see if she can explain any cultural nuances I might have missed

Bits of it, especially the rituals, kinda reminded me of Noroi, which is one of my favs

After giving it some thoughts, the movie really made a good job in juxtaposing two different movie genres from two countries. The first half is Japanese onryou (vengeful spirit) movie but with a Korean touch, the second half is a Korean creature feature (take The Host as an example) but with Japanese theme. Many if not all characters have contrasting traits. Hwa-Rim is a Korean but learned Japanese style exorcism. Bong-Gil knows the prayers and abilities of a traditional priest, but he's very hip with headphones, tech and such. Young-Geun looks like a sleazy, money oriented guy, but he quotes the bible a LOT.

Couldn’t agree with you more - I really enjoyed the first part but by the ending, I found my mind wandering and I was only halfway watching it while scrolling through my phone. The whole Korean shamanic stuff was great and it was interesting to see how other cultures deal with things you see presented in Western, Christian ways. I would rewatch it (at least parts of it) but I really couldn’t tell you the details of the ending. Much too long. I think The Wailing was long also - is this a common thing with Korean horror?

Yea they seem to be longer. Most of the time that works well like with the wailing and I saw the devil.
