Caught this one in theaters a while back, generally I enjoyed it, especially the shaman drumming scenes, but it was a bit convoluted. Might try and get my korean friend to watch it with me, see if she can explain any cultural nuances I might have missed
Yeah, there were two cases that this group of shamans had to resolve, and I felt the first case could have been used for the opening credits just to introduce the characters (and not take up the first half of the movie). Also got confused near the end regarding why that grave location was significant. But I would still recommend.
Great review, well covered, I love this movie and you definitely did it justice here, looking forward to watching more of your channel! Liked and subscribed :)
Totally agree about 3. It was just disappointing. Currently, 4 is my favorite with 1 and 2 tied for second place.(I didn't like 2 the first time I watched it. Then my kid got me to rewatch it--several times as it's her favorite--and I really liked it since. She is the best person to watch these with as she sees EVERY Easter egg!
A good, no-spoilers video, here; I had previously watched 'Candle Cove' & 'No End <House>' (albeit a fairly long time ago, now)--and your takes here were good enough that I decided to pause the video prior to the final section...because you'd already sold me on checking out 'Dream Door' blind! :D Keep up the good work!
if you like this, you should watch satan's slave and satan's slave 2, byt the same director, joko anwar. those are good. the final part of the trilogy maybe coming out next year or so
I really wanted to like As above so below, but the acting was just so bad and not believable that it broke the immersion completely for me. The Tunnel was a masterpiece though. One of the scariest films ive seen.
It's fun to explore the film in this way, but for Bergman, it was more important that audiences understood his films emotionally, not intellectually. So if you're ever frustrated or sad because you don't "understand" a Bergman movie - don't worry, you haven't failed at anything. Just relax and see what happens next. :)
Also, Bergman didn't discuss the script with his co-workers. So he might have had an idea going in, but then it evolves with each artist's contribution, and becomes more complex and ambiguous.
I’m half way through this and it is really enjoyable. A very broad spectrum of variety. Theres about 8-9 so far listed that I haven’t even seen yet and I have my own top 500 favorite horror film list lol. Very well put together, greatly detailed, and informative.
Fun fact! Freddy in terrible remake was kelly leak in original bad news bears 🐻 movies!!!!!! 1 and 2. KELLY LEEK WAS A GR8 FREDDY!!!!!! TOO BAD THE WRITERS SUCKED!!!!
If i never see another scream movie again, will be too soon!!! Overrated as hell!!!!! Michael, Jason, Freddy, Art. In that order! (Might even put Art the clown over freddy)
SPOILERS - I interpreted the black brick to represent lies and deceit. And the lie literally took on a life of its own and had to be defeated and destroyed.
So I'm about 15 minutes into this video. I absolutely love the format. You just called out Butterfly Kisses and out loud I yelled "YOU BETTER PUT THAT ONE IN PRESERVE FOREVER!!" Afflicted I would have put in preserve forever as well. Looking forward to the rest of the video and watching new ones.
I just finished watching this, and then came back to your review. I went into it 100% Blind. I really enjoyed this movie. It was very well done. I avoided the trailer and that made the movie better. It was beautifully shot, and I love how you said, you don't know what this movies direction is, and it keeps you guessing till the end. I loved it.
Saw this last night and it was well worth the watch. Went back to IMDb to rate it and watched the full trailer. DO NOT watch the trailer before watching the film because it will ruin it. I don't understand why more and more trailers are essentially spoilers these days, but it's a trend that is really self defeating in that if you remember a scene from the trailer then you can work out the plot so it takes away most of the enjoyment of a film like this.
Solid list. Infinity Pool would be my #1. Mia Goth can't be beat and Aleksandar Sarsgard is the perfect foil. I liked Beau is Afriad, also. It was very long and meandering. I wanted more concise storytelling. But OMG Patti Lupone and Joaquin Phoenix they are both so ideally cast.
I felt Godzilla was one of the best films of any genre in 2023. I think the reason it works is that if you take out Godzilla, it’s still a very moving human drama. Plus, it also has a few easter eggs from previous Godzilla movies that die hard fans would notice. Beau is Afraid is umm, an interesting choice. I liked the first half a lot but lost some steam in the last hour.
Talk to Me and Beau is Afraid also contend for the top spot of my favorite horror movie in 2023! Can't wait for the prequel and sequel to Talk to Me!!!
The thing I hate about franchises is, it's so boring when one great movie starts it, and then you just have to sort through the extras. And more often than not, they get gradually worse as it goes. At least the Friday and Chucky franchises have solid arguments on which are the best...and some consistency, more or less. Evil Dead series as well
I'm glad you recognize the very obvious, to me anyhow, that the og is clearly the best. It's such a trendy thing to pick part 3, and it's a fun and creative entry, no doubt. Only one horror classic in the bunch, though
I have zero problems with remakes and/or reboots and sequels when effort is put in. Unfortunately this franchise has very little of that. I haven't seen the Leatherface movie that you ranked as 2nd, so I can't judge it. At least Tobe Hooper was smart enough to recognize that he wasn't going to replicate the terror of the first one, and went in a different direction
Dud you guys, this was about sleep. It was extremely well studied and the writer's understanding of sleep disorders, the MEDICATION used for a certain one they also use as a date r*** drug and a party drug and how intricate the dosing has to be so you dont OD. VERY well executed. Its nothing about a serial killer or hiim being mentally ill or anything like that. This was a really really great movie about a condition I fight every single night, morning and even throughout the day.
Thank you for this film! I have been SO SICK of these dumb ghost/paranormal/zombie movies calling themselves horror and people thinking thats so scary. Its juvenile. Just my opinion, I'm not 14 anymore. Even back then I was picky about what I found scary. This is truly what psychological horror is and it was done so so well! If you hated it read on, so maybe you'll catch a few things that you didn't rendering it boring or dumb, you can also assume, maybe you don't like the genre. But understand the movie before calling it dumb because it was anything but. **SPOILER ALERT** (sorry) This is a movie I can say really got to me and I experience sleep in a very similar way. I have narcolepsy and sleep paralysis happens to me on a nightly and every morning basis and it cycles over and over and over and feels like it goes on for hours. With it you can have terrifying hallucinations that seem 100% real and shaking it off afterwards can take hours, eveen all day. (I am 50 now, as of a week ago and have been having major sleep disorders since I was in a crib, but it all got much much worse when I was 6 and again when I was 9 and amped up more to a tune of complete lack of rest and severe insomnia when I was 14. People who have narcolepsy are often given a medication called Xyrem. It's very powerful, it needs to be very carefully measured and you can ONLY get it in the US from one pharmacy that your sleep specialist must take a special course for to even be allowed to prescribe it. Only those who have narcolepsy can be prescribed it. It is, however, also the well known "date-r*p*" drug and is a party drug as well in lower doses. Its very easy to OD on as discussed in the movie. Xyrem is GHB. GHB is Xyrem. So for all of you who thought this movie was stupid or "boring" it could be because you have no reason to have that depth of sleep disorder knowledge at all. A lot of people have had sleep paralysis, you probably don't have any type of sleep disorder and people who have sleep disorders don't automatically have sleep paralysis. Also to ease your panicked mind, you're 100% safe, not having a seizure, nothing bad is happening physically, it'sjust extremely scary and try to remember what you're seeing is not real and you'll wake up fine shortly, it may feel like forever. It can just happen if you're over tired, sick, or for absolutely no reason at all. If sleep paralysis is something you have had randomly throughout your life, please think about the movie in the sense of being in that nightmare then in the paralysis and horrifying hallucinations and maybe you'll understand the meaning of the song, the paranoia, the hallucinations, the fear and the GHB.....Xyrem. It was an extremely well thought out movie and whoever wrote the script has a very clear and thorough understanding of narcolepsy, the nightmares and hallucinations and the knowledge of why and how Xyrem is given/taken and for what, and how intricate the dosing is, how easy it is to forget you took it and take too much, or OD in general. I am really sorry for the people who truly didnt like this movie. Even if I didnt have this knowledge or the commonality to understand every little detail and what it meant, I still really loved the movie. I was coming straight to the comments as soon as it was over to go off about how amazing it was. So I hope this helps people think differently about the plot and that literally every detail had significant meaning.
Glad to see the original at #1. Some younger fans of the franchise prefer the remake. I saw the original much later than 1974, but it looked timeless to me and I felt the impact 100%, regardless of how technology or filmmaking had advanced over the years. I agree with your synopsis of this absolute horror classic. Great list, keep 'em coming!
Hey Jake! You NAILED the first name, that’s important. I understand that the last name can be tricky, so let’s continue on the first name basis. 😅 Glad to be a part of the beard community!Keep up an awesome work, man.
