⚙️ SHOW NOTES - EPISODE #178: Simple projects or gifts are elevated to “Tiffany grade” when you make them from exotic wood. And they don’t have to be large pieces, in fact smaller items are preferred due to the higher costs and challenges of working with exotic wood. In this episode we take a look at some of my favorite exotics woods and I’ll share some tips and techniques for working with them as I make a small gift. I’d also like to hear your stories of the best small exotic wood projects or gift ideas you’ve made or have on your “to do” list.

Hi tom, Nice to see the saw stop :-), but curious as to why you removed the riving knife from your saw stop - especially as you were ripping the jig?

Hey thanks, nice catch, I should have had it back on there. It’s typically always on, but earlier in the day I was cutting some tenons and used a smaller diameter blade, from being sharpened several times, and the riving knife was too high so it was making the tenon cut unstable riding up, so it was off for that, and I simply forgot to put it back on. I know there is an adjustment for the riving knife height but I am still getting familiar with the saw. Thanks for reminding me, and for watching! 👍😎

Wait…Sawstop? When did that show up?

I put that in a few months ago Tom, picked it up barely used, nice saw. Finally decided it was time to retire the trusty Powermatic 66, it gave me a strong three decades and was still going strong. It sold fast on the used market. 👍

Ok I know I’m not the most observant guy in the world, According to my wife, but the sawstop is not something I would miss. What episode did it first appear in? I have to go back and see how I missed it. 😅

I was given a vintage block plane a while back which needed new wooden parts for it. I decided to make it from Indian Rosewood. Wish i had used Brazilian now as the smell was awful! Absolutely stank of pee!

Sounds like a nice plane Matthew. I always think of the Krenov style wooden block planes when I consider making my own. It’s on the bucket list to make one of these days, perhaps sharing the process on an SNL. He talks in his book, A Cabinetmakers Notebook, about one of his favorites pictured there and made in Cocobolo. If you have the book, I think it’s about 1/3 of the way in, a classic Krenov style blockplane. I think I’ll reserve that big chunk of Cocobolo for blockplanes. Thanks for watching! 👍😎

Some of these woods are really neurotoxics, can cause cancer, seizures, dementia... a bit disappointing that it was brushed off as "no big deal" there!
