EXPANSION:  Big Ten Turned its Back on Florida State?  Do Indiana and Purdue Have Fighting Chance?

Locked On BIG 10

Is the Big Ten ignoring Florida State and an expansion opportunity to add the Seminoles to the conference? Does the same go for Clemson regarding any college football realignment talk? Why do we ask? There has been recent chatter that those schools, who are trying to legally leave the ACC and their media deal may be huddling with the Big 12.
WHAT IS FSU DOING?
At Locked on Big 10 we have long thought Florida State and the Big Ten are a match made in heaven. So what gives? Keep in mind, while Florida State and Clemson's lawsuits and counter lawsuits are on going versus the ACC, any school wishing to leave the ACC in time for the 2025 college football season must make such an announcement by August 15. That is one month from today. So naturally conversations between schools and conferences must be going on behind the scenes.
HAVE THEY LOST THEIR MINDS?
But there is still one big question. Why would FSU and Clemson fight tooth and nail and spend so much money to get out of the ACC just to go to the Big 12 which barely pays its member schools a few million bucks more than the horrible ACC Media Grant of Rights Deal? Why go from one bad deal to another when all of the money is in the Big Ten and SEC? We will try to figure this out together with some ideas on Locked on Big Ten.
DO INDIANA AND PURDUE HAVE A SHOT?
And while the Big Ten is busy expanding and realigning with bigger and better football programs, do smaller schools like Indiana and Purdue have a fighting chance? We will look ahead to their respective 2024 college football seasons.
It's all right here on Locked on Big Ten with Craig Shemon.

Don’t see them adding them without AAU membership. If they want into Florida they’ll go with Miami when the conference implodes. Honesty I think UNC, ND and VA are the bigger prize here.

FSU is close to getting AAU membership and getting in the SEC's backyard would benefit the B1G in opening up more recruiting for the B1G in Florida's market. Hope we get into the B1G and create great rivalries.

The Big 10 and the SEC don’t need to add any more schools to further diminish the individual slices that the current members schools are entitled to. Notre Dame is the only school remaining in the country that would add to the value of either conference and I don’t know if they’re giving up their independence anytime soon. Hypothetically, if FSU and/or Clemson joined the Big 10, they’d probably earn a lesser share like Oregon and Washington until the next media rights renegotiation which won’t take place for another 5 years or so.

Thank you for putting my fears at ease as an FSU fan and alum. I would hate for FSU to put us through all this drama and litigation just to accept a Big 12 invite. I believe that would GREATLY upset a great number of FSU fans and alums. WE have dealt with the mistake we made in 1991 going to the ACC over the SEC. I know at the time it looked like the right decision and FSU enjoyed a decade of dominance, but long term, it was not a great move. I hope that better financial minds are running the show. And with anti-ESPN and anti-SEC sentimentality on the rise at FSU over the snub AND general arrogance of the SEC, I would be surprised if FSU went to the SEC, even though they are the best cultural fit. And yes, AAU is a thing, and FSU should get in the next round, but not all B1G schools are part of it with Nebraska being kicked out in 2011. And no disrespected intended for the University of South Florida, but them getting the nod for AAU membership over FSU, a flagship university in Florida has kind of diminished my perception of the AAU as being some hoity-toity academic group. Besides, why would the B1G NOT want schools in Florida? What better place for recruiting? For God's sake...almost all bowl games are played in the state and at the end of December, the I-4 Corridor from Orlando to Tampa is filled with B1G fans for bowl games. So, why not?

Purdue is going to be a lot better this year and teams are sleeping on them. No one mentions last year Purdue battled all kinds of injuries, new staff, and a brutal schedule. This year they bring in a solid recruiting class paired with a top transfer class in the B10. On top of that you get a second year bump for the coaching staff. Purdue is three deep at O line with an average size of 6-4 315 pounds. They bring in 4 transfers from Georgia bulldogs who were all high four stars coming out of HS. The WR that transfered in are all long and speedy. On Defense they lose Nick Scorton which will hurt but again get a DE transfer from D3 school that won Defensive player of the year and another GA DE. They brought in multiple CB from the transfer portal most of which a 6’1’’ or taller and quick. Which they were missing last year and in Walter’s defense he depends on the CB. Purdue will go 7-5 or 8-4 with a surprise upset of either ND or Oregon which both are at home. I’m leaning more towards ND with two weeks to prepare.

If something does not make sense, then we need to look at the facts of what we know and create a narrative that allows the facts to make sense if we are being logical. Right now, ESPN owns the CFP rights in football. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has stated his intention to take the Big 12 to the P1 at Big 12 media days. So, now we have to ask ourselves the question of what would make the Big 12 the P1 of the P3. Would it mean that Florida State and Clemson goes to the Big 12 and possibly other candidates like Notre Dame (who has repeatedly been shafted by the Big 10 for the last 70 years) going to the Big 12. What would such a scenario look like. There are clues left by Yormark all over the media days in Vegas if anyone cares to extrapolate the narrative of the Big 12 and the events that are taking place. Would ESPN have an advantage over other media rights companies by participating in the expansion funding of the Big 12 by using its rights to the CFP as leverage to tell the other conferences to back off or else problems will happen for the SEC and Big 10 in the championship bowl games? What if the Big 12 picked up Notre Dame also just to spite the Big 10 for not taking them in the past? There are of course a great many unanswered questions here and I certainly don't pretend that I know what is going on in the negotiation room. But, if the Big 12 narrative is accurate that we can connect with from what has been said by those who are in the room with a seat at the negotiating table, than the probability of accuracy is enhanced.
