I live in La Paz, one of the most expensive cities in Mexico. I live a much better life here than I do back in Canada. I don't cook at home as often and eat out in restaurants. I don't go to 'fancy tourist' restaurants. I eat at local places near my house. We can eat two meals a day in taco stands and small family run restaurants for about $30/day. Things that are surprisingly expensive? Bananas, bread, potatoes and potato chips as well as gasoline. Cheap? Tortillas, rice and beans. Rent here is surprisingly high for Mexico. Noisy? Sure, there's noise. There's a lot more music, barking dogs and even roosters right down town in La Paz. If it bothers you, it's not the right place for you. The guy who refills your cleaning product bottles from big jugs in the back of his truck has the chorus from "Eye of the Tiger" playing non-stop when he comes by. At first that irritated me until I realized what it was for. I got my RFC (tax number) from SAT a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't that hard. I love your take on Mexican society and how things are done here. Here in La Paz nobody stops at stop signs, but they are very good about taking turns and being polite at the intersections. The police here have become better as wages have improved. In six months here this year I haven't been pulled over. Last year I was pulled over twice. Once a cop wanted a bribe and I refused to pay and he let me go. The other time the cop wanted to explain that in Mexico you can't turn right on a red light and let me go with a warning. Everybody here is insanely friendly. I have amazing neighbors and all over town I find new friends. So many nice friendly people here. There's one guy with some mental health problems who roams around ranting at the universe but even he will say "buenos dias" when you say hello to him. Our neighborhood is a small gated community in downtown La Paz. it is gentrified and that's OK. A lot of my neighbors are from Mexico City - some work there and commute and their families live here. Several of my Mexican neighbors have second homes here and some rent them out on Air BnB. All around our little community is 'old style' La Paz. Some buildings are disintegrating and abandoned, some are very well kept and nice and everything in between. Everything can be found within walking distance. I think it's been almost two weeks since I drove anywhere.

That's one of the things I love about Mexico so much. How everyone respects each other and is nice to each other no matter what. I've even seen road rage situations end in a hug, and handshake, and an "I'm Sorry" from one or both of the people involved. It truly is a magical place. Viva Mexico!
I have never seen road rage once in Yucatan in almost 3 years. In Miami, it was daily, if not multiple times a day to some degree. I think people just learn to cooperate here a little more. They understand there are people on bikes, tricycles, scooters, dogs, bad roads, etc. and sometimes drivers just have to adapt and fit it.

I just got off a bus here in Mexico, coming from downtown. I could not avoid laughing at the fact that in place of the bus top button a squeaky, rubber chicken toy was replaced. I guess the button was not working and they just taped this toy over the pole. But hey, it worked. Contrast this to Los Angeles, where once a bus driver screamed at a girl, who maybe was homeless, for listening to music on a radio she had. The driver even stopped the bus at one point, since the girl would not listen, and I think he threaten to call the cops. Something like that would never occur in Mexico. If anything locals would think that is insane. Here in Culiacan, sinaloa the drivers blast out music of all types, hang in their mirrors teddy bears, CDs and decorate the ceiling even with disco lights. It does not bother me. If anything, it makes things less monotonous. I've actually have re-discovered some good songs. People also do not look depressed, angry like in the USA.
Jaja the classic chicken bus stop button! Yeah i have seen it myself out here and its things like that which I love so much about Mexico and make it such a charming place to live. I still often see videos of how people are treated in the US and it is beyond rare to see anything like that here. A few days ago a grandma was having a beer in a public space out here and the cops were harassing her and she just chugged it and they took away the empty bottle and nothing happened.... except it was all over the news and the whole public was on grandmas side and everyone was hating on the cops. In the USA that grandma would be arrested and the public outcry would be, "She is not exempt from the law and glad she got arrested!" That is no place I want to live. I prefer Mexico where common sense usually prevails. Viva Mexico!
On the noise issue, where I live in Florida we have a lot of the three M's (motorcycles, muscle cars and monster trucks). Having lived with that kind of noise for so long, I doubt there is much about noise in Mexico that will annoy me.

I don't know how some of the other immigrants are spending sooooo much money. I watch their cost of living videos and I don't think I could spend that much if I tried. I guess they're doing all of their shopping at Walmart and Costco. You have to choose the right location and like you said, speak Spanish, as well as get your head out of the clouds. If you just move on down here without knowing anything and they tell you rent is 6000 pesos, when it should be 3000 pesos (just a random example of what it might be in my area) then you're going to ignorantly pay it. On SEVERAL occasions, I've had the vendors at the market try to give me free food b/c I literally needed ONE tomato or ONE potato, not trying to gringo price me at all. Of course, I gave them a little something because they're trying to pay their bills like everyone else. Even the corner store guy sometimes gives me a discount on dog food or gives me one piece of fruit to try for free. It's because I speak Spanish and I'm respectful. The cost of living videos just make me sooo mad, especially since a lot of the time it's what I was paying, or even more than I was paying, in the US. I'll never share my exact location because I don't want all of them coming here. lol

Some people are just beyond ignorant sometimes and as i said Common Sense ain't so Common. As for the freebies and all around great treatment and service from the mom and pop stores I totally agree. I try to do most of my shopping within the community and only really go to the bigger grocery stores to just get the items I can only get there. For example la Talaperia which is the Hardware store. I very rarely go to the big hardware stores unless I need something specific I can only find there and even Home Depot I've only been there a few times and I see how Crazy expensive things are there compared to my local hardware store and I often ask myself how do they even stay in business.... until i see the typical clientele in there and then I know exactly how they stay in business. 😅 Thanks for sharing! I dont think it's expensive in Mexico as long as you budget, shop at the local markets, cook your own food. Some folks may be spending more $ in the "expat" communities instead of living, volunteering in the local community.

OMG! Jose you are hilarious! I loved this video and that last little bit about not being able to flush toilet paper was just too much! Would you believe that I had a friend who told me that he couldn’t live in Mexico because of that?! I mean, come on now and this man was living in a hotel at the time with his kids all in one room! And paying through the nose! But he was too good to live in Mexico because he couldn’t flush toilet paper. He lives in Kansas City and couldn’t find a house big enough for him and both of his kids and he could have retired too, but couldn’t afford to if he reminded in the US, because it was too expensive. I told him how little I was paying for rent at the time and how nice and comfortable my place was, but Mexico wasn’t good enough for him. I told him, fine stay where you’re at and Mexico didn’t need his attitude of entitlement anyway. I haven’t spoken to him since I do hope he and the kids are okay though. Have a great day!

All they have to do is take one look at me, and it is obvious I’m not Mexican 😂. That’s why I don’t shop where prices aren’t already on the item. I avoid open markets. As much as I’d like to shop at these because they have such cool things, I don’t because I know all they have to do is take one look at me. I don’t dress in rags, I do attempt to speak the language, I don’t live around other expats/immigrants, and I carry myself well, so…🤷🏾♀️. Weird. It’s a losing situation and I deal with it, but I’m still happy to be here.
Honestly no one should be shopping anywhere where the prices aren't clearly marked unless you know the people and are good friends with them. I only shop in places where the prices are clearly marked and I do my due diligence to make sure I am not being over charged. Most of the time I am often surprised things come out much cheaper than anticipated and the only place I do actually get over charged even with the prices clearly labeled are at big box grocery stores. I have found I have to be even more vigilent at places like Sorriana and Cherdraui with the pricing especially in the bakery section
@@JoseArteagaTravels Yes, I live in Merida, on a small Social Security check. and I’m living WELL. It’s a good life, better than I can have in the USA and the people here are so friendly!
One more thing I’d like to say to anyone that needs to hear this. I’ve been here just a little over 6 months, didn’t know a bit of Spanish when I got here and still know very little but I’m learning because I think that is important. But not being proficient in the language hasn’t stopped me from living a normal life. If you stumble with your Spanish, the people here will help you. Two people who know a little English will step up, put their English knowledge together to help you. And they graciously help you…no heeing and hawing and telling you to go back to the USA like some of us do to foreigners back in the USA.

@@JoseArteagaTravels I travel a lot to Bangkok Thailand because I have friends there. So much of the tips and advice and insights you provided about moving to and living in Mexico applies to Thailand as well. One point you made really hit hard and that is, it is the "expats" who will scam you, screw you over or take advantage of you in some way if the could, not the locals. Keep telling it like it is Jose.
There is an unwritten rule in Mexico about noisy parties. One weekend your neighbors might have a loud party with the understanding that next weekend you will have a loud party and no one complains much less calls the cops.
Mexico is simply more laid back or relaxed in general. In 2022, I came to Mexico to pay for what was owned in taxes for my mother's property, my mom having passed away the same year. Years were owned (maybe more than 6 years) I had to pay over $15,000 pesos. But there was a discount around May, something the government offeres every year during the holidays ( like Semana Santa) and I just had to pay around $8,000 pesos after the discount. Like the government was just like, " bruh, just pay the $8, 000 pesos and we're cool". The bureaucracy was annoying, however. And the staff, some of them, would rude. But I was willing to go for it to get the discount.
When I leave, I will never call myself an expat, I will be a foreign or immigrant. I agree with you completely. So you want to call me and EX-Patriot because I don't like how you treat me? I don't like how you nickel and dime me to death so a certain few can take what I earn for themselves? I don't like the prices rising but I get less? And no matter where I go, they make sure they get their cut. I am sick of hearing how inflation rises as if the greedy aren't doing it to further take all that they can. Those camels don't have a chance in hell in passing through the eye of any needle. I'm just so sick of the brainwashing and flat out lying. How is everything done against the people who work to support their own country? I could go on but you know all of this. I love your "to your face" approach in your videos. Thank you again!!!

I totally agree! In Mexico there are a lot of options for transport that don't include you having to have your own vehicle. It's great because even if you do have a car, you dont always want to drive. Thanks for sharing!

Worse thing anybody can do is trying to live like a tourist while living anywhere permanently with limited funds. That applies anywhere in the world, even in countries were our money worth more and some of the stuff we can not afford back home tends to be as expensive, if not more. The best approach is learn how to live like a local and avoid trying to be "different". Immersing oneself in the the local culture doesn't mean one has to live in a shack and use a donkey as a way of transportation. Learning the local language, to begin with, is a must since by doing that one can immerse oneself into a very vibrant and interesting way of life, not to mention the kind of respect one gets in any community. Being a tourist is only interesting for a while, let alone that the main purpose of the industry is to get as much money as they can from your "hard currency". The gringo pricing is a reflection of your attitude towards the place you have chosen to live in, just allow yourself to adopt a new culture without losing yours. It is that simple. Amen brotha!! We sold EVERYTHING in Canada and took the leap! Never even visited MX before. (But traveled all over the Caribbean and even lived in Bogota Colombia for 2months) I did spend 3yrs researching it since the C19 thing though . Been living in Playa Del Carmen since Jan of this year. Freakin LOVE it. It’s a learning process every day. The ‘gold’ is in the small neighborhoods! Not Sam’s Club or the Chedraui’s. Your success in MX depends on your ability to adapt and integrate. Furthermore, I much more prefer the live with the nationals than surrounded by stuck up, entitled expats. I wouldn’t go back to Ontario Canada for all the money in the world folks.

Hi Jose...I live in New York but I live in a very quiet area so I would never want to move in a neighborhood where there is too much noise...unless I can find a home that is soundproof or I would have to live in a part of Mexico that's quiet...that solves the problem!!! Wala
Believe it or not there are tons of places in Mexico where it is totally quiet. In fact outside of some noises on some days for the most part I get to enjoy the silence a lot and I live in a city of around a million people. I often times enjoy the chirping of the birds and other sound of nature, as do many other Mexicans in other parts of the country. Viva Mexico!
When I ride my bicycle past the trashiest dump house I yell "17 mil por mes" and then laugh psychoticly. The building falling off the cliff at the ocean "17 mil por mes" it's an inside joke about the price of housing rent here.
It might be that my name isn't Jose and that my skin is light enough for people to call me weyto every where I go but there is racism here. I have experienced racism towards me since being here on three or four occasions already and I wanted to think it wouldn't happen or that type of ignorance wouldn't exist and I am wrong but people are people and the small percentage has done this to me. It in no way harms my perception of Mexico but I do know to not trust all.
Overall, Mexico is Cool, Calm, and Collected, So when People see Wrong doing, Breaking Rules, etc., etc., etc., It's Ok, as long as they're not hurting anybody, Who Cares. They're just mellow People (In General) minding their own business, Just let it be, It's Ok... 😊

Not affecting Merida we have a huge underground water basin. Can't really comment on the rest of Mexico since I don't live in those areas but I do know it is a problem since I have lived here and it has a lot to do with areas of Mexico going through a drought at the moment. But again as I said i am not the person to ask i would have to research it like anyone else.
Everybody needs to understand that regardless how expensive Mexico is, it will always be way cheaper than living in the USA. As far as the "Gringo Pricing," that has nothing to do with over Charging White People, it has to do with Not Being A Mexican/Mexican resident, I get "Gringo Priced" (And I'm Mexican), but Regardless (Think about it) "Gringo Pricing" is still very Inexpensive, Calm down, Relax and Please know that us Mexicans get "Gringo Priced" also... My Mother goes to Mexico for the Dentist's, and She gets "Gringo Priced," But Regardless, She's still paying Way, Way, Way Cheaper than paying in the USA (And Better Work)... 😊

Sorry to disappoint but the reality is that I DO NOT have a customer/client base. I simply make videos about living in Mexico. That's it. All I do is make videos and I give people FREE information so they can empower themselves to do it on their own or if absolutely necessary when people do need some help then I offer links to trusted professionals such as lawyers, translators and others to help people get what they need by offering them people I trust and have used in the past. My 1 on 1 consulting is to get even more in depth knowledge like what I already give you in my videos. So if you do not like my videos then you will simply not hire me for a consultation. I'm not trying to sell anything or make friends or anything like that. I am just trying to inform people with the truth and that is it. In the US, i knew this attorney who charged an extra $300 or $400 for any potential client who wore a shirt with the Polo logo on it. His theory was that anyone stupid enough to flaunt his wealth when seeking to obtain legal services, needed to pay extra for that stupidity. Venders everywhere are the same. If you want the admiration for looking rich, expect people to charge you more for being rich.
That is awesome! Very well said! At the end of the day as you said many people want to flaunt their perceived wealth but want to be charged less than someone who is working class. I very rarely mind paying extra and I'm just a bum so it always makes me laugh when I hear people constantly complain about not getting a deal and haggling over a few bucks with someone who those few dollars difference is what will determine if they even make a profit or not. I have been around the world, Mexico is the only place where you always hear dogs barking and where you cannot use sidewalks in neighbourhood because dogs will attack you through the gate's bars or scare the)&@" out of you, really dogs here are so agressive because majority of people never walk them out!!! For the rest there is also too many crazy drivers who won't let you cross without running but all the rest is good
I agree I do think many dogs out here are more aggressive than in other countries, Gizmo is included in that. I think it's because they are more territorial and really do fight and guard their homes and space more than they do in other countries. Also many Mexicans do not walk their dogs with a leash they just let them loose in the neighborhood and they just walk themselves. I think dogs represent their owners and in Mexico since the cops aren't going to be helping you with much, that is why most dogs are so aggressive and the typical Mexican likes it that way. They are a deterrent more than anything else. Gizmo is extremely aggressive especially if I'm not around but once i show up and let him know that person or other dog is not a threat he usually calms down. He is more calm around humans that we know than he is with other dogs, he like many other dogs in Mexico sometimes does not play well with others. As for the crazy drivers.... I'm from Miami and driven all up and down the East Coast.... its not that crazy to me from what I am used to but i can see how for some driving in Mexico is a scary thought. Thanks for sharing!
That’s interesting, my experience has for the most part been the opposite with both dogs and drivers. The street I currently live on has many dogs and the owners just let them hang out in front of their houses and they don’t bother me at all and they walk along the sidewalk but are completely relaxed. I see them sunning themselves all the time. As for the drivers I’ve encountered some of the most courteous respectful non-aggressive drivers here that I’ve ever had to deal with. They stop at the intersection even if there is no light when they know you want to cross and don’t try to run me down. I had the opposite experience in Cuenca, Ecuador. I guess it just depends on where you live. I’ve lived in three different cities here in Mexico btw. @clubbusk

Yo jose! After visiting merida and progreso, the only things holding me back from moving there are the instant coffee and the milk. Everything was super affordable, despite being whiter than casper; and the food was phenomenal, despite not being able to get out of bed for 3 days cause of montezuma. BUT..... I couldnt get a good cup of coffee to save my life. Everyone just sold instant coffee. It was awful. And the milk....i get the UHT pasteurization, but dear god. The milk tastes like someone ground up dried american cheese product and put it in all the milk. There are hundreds of milk options, but every one i tried was awful. Might seem insignificant, but not to me. Loved the explosions of color and sound everywhere. The gas song makes me happy as hell, and everytime i hear a bicycle horn, i assume theres a clown riding around selling tortillas and such. Where the hell can i get a good cup of coffee and some quality whole milk? Do i have to buy my own cow or goat, cause then it would probably be too expensive. Also, the cannabis thing seems problematic for a gringo. I dont feel like id get hassled (being smart about smoking), but should it happen, i doubt the policia would give a damn about my citation of supreme court decisions. The coffee was an issue I had when I moved here until I found out what coffee to get and where, and since then I have been extremely happy because most of the Mexican Coffee is far superior to anything in the USA. As for Milk I was never a big fan of milk due to the taste in the USA and the stomach issues it caused.... Until i moved to Mexico and drank the milk out here and well now I got no issues and think it tastes great. We buy the LaLa brand whole milk. I think that along with other things are a matter of taste. Also if you go to the actual central Mercado you can get yourself Whole RAW Milk which is by far the best option. We just dont drink that much milk ourselves to buy it on a regular basis. As for the herbal remedies as long as you keep it at home then you got no problems. If you smoke it in public spaces you will get in trouble as that is a big no no. Hope that helps answer some of your concerns! Viva Mexico!
@@JoseArteagaTravels yeah man! That actually helps a lot. Went to a bunch of mercados looking for some raw milk, but couldn't find any. I read about the Mexican coffee, but couldn't find any at chidraui or any smaller shops or mercados. I really tried with the lala. Delactose, Pura de Vaca, but yeah, not to my taste. @@geoffspeed yeah. I do have issues with rapid weight loss, so I have to get a ton of calories in, but due to ulcerative colitis, I can't eat as much as I like. Have to make high calorie smoothies. Would be nice if it wasn't an issue, but it is.
We still got plenty of water here in Merida and in the Yucatan. But the crisis is worldwide. Many places around the world and in other parts of Mexico are also facing that issue. If they don't take care of the water here in this region it can happen here as well.
Yea...I just saw a video on the situaion in Mexico City that they're having a big water crisis...that's scary...you can't survive without water...that will defienty mess up tourism if it continues!!!

A small handful of Foreigners are not making EVERYTHING in Mexico more expensive. If anything most of the gentrification is actually being caused by other Mexicans not a few expats who eventually move back home and dont stay in Mexico
Not all have money, most like to pretend like they do and thus that is why they complain about things being so expensive and other such things. I actually know plenty of people with money out here and none of them complain about the cost of living nor any of the other problems some of these bougie expats complain about. Bougie = Fake Rich 😅
@@JoseArteagaTravels If the ones I have watched have the assets they claim they do, they are moneyed and seem pleased that the residency $ requirements have been raised. Two of them said to not listen to channels that say you can work around that. Anyway, I can't identify with them. You are the one I listen to.
