I avoided sol like the plague ever since I first picked strive up exclusively because I didn't want to play the box art man and now that I'm a sol main in xrd I realised that like, damn box art man is cool edit: I'm now a Kyle kisk stale bread and water without ice enjoyer :3c
Thats what I realised I was doing wrong as well, now im on my journey to rediscover fighting games as im trying out more characters that I thought I wouldn't like
The starter guides in Strive seem to be only a description of what the specials are. They never felt to me like they were explaining how to play the character, only what attacks the character has. I was about to write "what tools the character has" but that is incorrect as we've seen. I don't know what else to say, I really like your videos, they're always thoughtful and help me see things I can't properly describe.
I have a friend whos Really struggling to Understand how to play BBCF Azrael with his expectations, especially on how to Get in, this really does highlight some of what i see in Him trying to play Azrael Ignore the fact another Friend Mains Nine and i Play Lambda 11
you talking about the bedman guide emphasizing the error mechanic reminds me of how elphelt's starter guide really emphasized her "chain lollipop" rekka despite that only being a small part of her's fun (in case you're wondering i found my fun with abusing the homing aspect of her rifle's shots and prc launching with her grenade :) )
This video was very much appreciated man. Not only for the anre representation(i main him), but the overall lesson that we should just enjoy the game. Granted, if you are looking to become a pro player and win tournaments than it probably is better to go with whats been tested and what works. Anything to guarentee victory. But if your a casual player, you should just pick up chars you like and take the time to figure them out. Anre was built the way he was built for the people who like an alternative strategy to approaching the fight. I also agree with you that while playing him as a zoner is a great way to use him, its def not all there is to his kit.
Your videos always give me this amazing chillin feeling, kinda like how I fell in love with manga. Like this electric feeling. You are right, I need to trust myself more. And I can’t wait to watch even more of your videos. My favorite one is when you talked about pixie characters.
The mindset you have in this video is something I would aspire to. Where you can break down the mechanics of a character and make them more flexible to your own style. I hope to one day do that. Where I'm at, fighting games are really hard and I don't have that knack. So it really helps that I can look up tried and tested ways characters are played and then intuit if that's my speed so I can get straight into practicing. Great video!
My expectation was to have fun playing any hot FG waifu and then realizing if they don't have a meterless DP it's not as fun as going BEYPA TORASUTO on wake up 24/7
I play against your Anre few days ago (that was one of my most enjoyalbe set since the release btw) and you make me realise how fun this character can be in the right hands.
I been playing fighting games since I was like 12 and only had this problem twice Saya on Nitro+ Blasterz I thought she was gonna play like Testament from GG but nope, I still didn't mind too much cuz I liked her anyway and she became my main on that game Sora on Smash Ultimate, from the trailers and stuff I thought he was gonna be faster and more combo oriented but ended up being more floaty and gimmicky, sure you can play him faster and not use his projectiles but at that point just choose Roy
This video really vibes with how I like to play these games. I like to make the character myself. thats not to say I wont learn from others, I LOVE seeing what others do in tourney, and also stealing cool tech off them, but I like to add it to the way I play my character, not replace! You can make the way You want to do things WORK! :D
This video hit me like a truck. I've always gravitated towards unpopular, mid or low tier characters, and I DREAD going on sites like Dustloop or asking others how to play a character simply because they give me expectations that I might not be able to meet. But then, I played DBFZ when it was new, and this suddenly wasn't a problem. Goku Blue? 'He fights better than SSJ Goku, I guess." And that was enough for me to win and have fun. Maybe, my passion for fighting games just needs me to revert to the OG mindset. Learning solely through the game itself was so much easier to digest
I always like asking what people find cool about my character when they want to learn. Usually it's the mix but sometimes it's the funny moves and then you get to help someone find ways to create a play style that enables what they find cool. It's how I learned and became the player I am today. For better or for worse :)
Yeah in GB i've been experiencing something similar, I haven't played FG in 10 years and out of the characters I pick is Vira, and I found out the main reason I picked her differs from every other people who advices or tell you her playstyle. While her character focuses on her install and gives her insane combo, im more interested in the other tools the install provides. Like her ability to cancel and get longer strings and pressure from middle to her airjumps that you can do a jump into a dash immedieately and have almost the 2nd fastest overhead mix up after lancelot. This is what I understood of this character that others didn't do and you get a different expectation if you follow another Vira player. What I understood is not only that install gives her very devastating combos if you ever get a counter hit, but the self discovery that her install promotes her main playstyle, which is use your additional mobility as additional tools for pressure as she's possibly one of the characters besides lancelot who has a huge variety of tools for pressure that the player cannot come expecting every single one, like dashing then dropping to keep up the momentum after a middle combo as if it was a wall combo, her fast mix ups or the ability to easily get out of situations or reset your neutral to always be in her favourable range. And I don't blame people for not coming think of it, when you have better options, if you want mobility, you got Seox, and if you want pressure you got Lancelot whose mix up and shimmy counterbaiting god, expectations built by knowing there are characters who excel at those roles more than her.
When I was starting to get into fighting games I often found myself avoiding top tier characters and using lower tier characters because I wanted to be unique and play my own way due to expectations like these, I started truly getting into fighting games with dragon ball fighterz. My mains were tien, Janemba, ginyu, android 18, vegito and buu (the small one) and I REALLY wanted to play roshi but he was to technical for me at the time. These are all characters with some wierd gimmick (except vegito, and tien was just kinda bad) but I played them because I loved their style and had a lot of fun. Then me and my brother started playing mk11 together where at first I couldn’t truly find a character I loved, eventually I started using terminator almost exclusively because I liked the character and he felt easier to play then other characters, after some time I tried Shao Kahn and despite being the worst character, he was my instant main. His hammer was satisfying and his combos where fun for me. After that, we started playing rivals of aether. In that game my main was shovel knight because I loved the shovel knight games and his shop gimmick was alot of fun for me, Especially when I got to style on my brother by wasting 2000 gold on a useless cosmetic mid match. Then I kinda took a break from fighting games for some time, mainly because my brother was just so much better then me and I didn’t enjoy it that much. We still played every once and a while but he would have to go easy on me just so I could have a chance. I got back into fighterz for a bit then dropped it again and tried playing persona 4 arena for a while but was still getting destroyed so I didn’t do it much, I was getting better and starting to understand mechanics but still couldn’t contest with my brother. Eventually I got an Xbox series x and was enjoying games on it. But then my brother found guilty gear strive and we played it together. And I really liked it so I started getting into it and getting somewhat okay but I couldn’t figure out a main, few days later, sin is released and I instantly mained him because he was considered bad after he released, and he had a play style I absolutely loved. Plus he is literally just like me when I was 8. I started making combos with him, I learned how to use his meter more effectively and just getting better at the game in general. Plus after some buffs sin is considered very good now. now, I’m a sin main at floor 10 in ranked and still learning new tech and matchups. And I’m still having a ton of fun while doing so. Plus, me and my brother are basically an even match now. Only took 5 years 😎
Hi fellow anre user. Glade to see fellow harvon lover. I really love fgc character overview but they do have the tendacies to misrepresent characters. But i also have the issue of misidentifying them too.
Actually had something similar happen to me with expectations vs reality. Thought Nier would be a decently complex and unpopular puppet character that took real time to figure out. She definitely isn’t any of that, so I ended up playing someone else. As part of my journey to improvement I plan to try any character I have difficulty fighting, likely meaning I will have tried most of the cast by the time I get at least one character to master rank.
My favorit charachter from the design in SF& is JP because of his new skin than i beggin playing him but i dont like beeing a real zooner so my style is also more like trying to open them up with cross up teleports and the high low ghost and i love it and i love it so much and than if i zone with the piller they always forget it and this makes that game so much more fun and its my unique kind of playing JP and him and Ryu are my first charachters i became diamant with in my first fighting game at all
I am bad at fighting games like really bad, barely know combos etc but i picked up the Virtua fighter remaster and i gotta say it's a blast. Picked up unga bunga Brad and do i loose often ? hell yeah but i have fun and i try to see how i can improve my gameplan and how to better play Unga bunga man, idk why this particular game clicked with me but not SF or Tekken
I always avoided charge characters, because my timing is really bad, and because they can't just react whenever they want. In paper, they look pretty rigid, unforgiving, not very expresive, and not very fun. Enter street fighter 6 Blanka, the character that have got me the more fun, crazy surprises and innovative strategies in all my years playing 2d fighters. I never expected to love an oversized green hairy tarzan so much.
Expectations. Come, from reason reason to exist reason to play reason to enjoy it. Without expectations, you will not have reason. Expectations do not ruin.
