This week I discuss some pretty crazy reasons why it's so hard to paint large and/or expensive models (Usually those go together don't they). We've all been there, that feeling that creeps in, sometimes even before you open the box. Well I have some tips that may help out!
The minis, the setting, the game itself, RIVENSTONE LOOKS SICK!!! Check it out right here:

lol, yea I never expected my psych degree applying to war gaming but yea. It's the same types of cognitive distortions we're always subject to. I mean we use DBT for everything else, should we start doing DBT classes for mini painting? Classes in non-metallic metal and distress tolerance skills?
@anthonytadych3933
@anthonytadych3933 2 года назад
@@aggonzalezdc That would be a DBT skills group I would be totally down for! One of the art therapists that I work with will sculpt orks and such during his groups and will have me paint them. Painting is also a great form of mindfulness for me at least.

I will say this. When I started Kragnos I felt the same. Then I started painting it and one thing that most people don’t think about is because it’s so big, techniques are much easier. Glazing, feathering, stippling all are so much better with the larger model. I found that it’s not the techniques I was having issues with, it was doing techniques on a small scale. So i will say, my Kragnos is my best work to date because of its size helping me work on my techniques.

Yeah, exact same thing happened when I was painting up an Ironclad - rust and grime applying and other such techniques was so much easier on a bigger model for me

I have a similar issue when it comes to both building and painting...but it's with nearly irreplaceable vintage 80's era Japanese model kits, especially the really obscure ones you need to actively hunt for. This problem gets worse because, to get the best out of them, you need to remove seam lines, fix gaps and fitting issues and (in my case) mod work to slightly improve the kit to my standards.

Casey, this is good stuff. There's such a mental hurdle to clear when painting ANYTHING for a lot of folks (including myself). My motto that I always try to tell everyone is "it's just paint". You can paint over it. You can strip the model. You can add more and make it beautiful! It's just paint. It's so important to talk about the mental game of painting and hobbying. There's a knee-jerk reaction to compare yourself to other painters that drives those thought distortions. Identifying and giving it a name helps us defeat it! I'm adding this video to my "Required Viewing" playlist to revisit in the future when I'm feeling defeated by my work.

Thanks my dude, sometimes the hardest part is picking the brush up.

Hey Casey, always like that you share your thought process on the desicions you make along the way and that is very interesting. I was surprised that leaving a WIP model on your desk works for you. I find is the opposite for me, the more I see it unfinished the more I get used to it being unfinish. What works great for me is hide it from sight. After a few weeks I will “re-discover it” and say to myself, “man this is almost done” and be motivated to work on it. Thanks for the videos.

My problem isnt the fear of ruining anything, but the space I need to work. I have a very small apartment (literally a one room studio with barely enough room for my computer desk and bed) and to paint I need to unpack the huge supply chest I have amassed and clear off the entire desk (as to not get paint on my super expensive PC system and monitor) and this alone holds me back as I cant just squeek out a few models or chip away at the larger ones littl by little. Its hard to get myself to clear off all that space for an hour long painting session so it becomes this thing where do I have the entire day to paint and if not, it will have to wait~

Casey you just described a significant portion of my model productivity. My 'grey army' or 'pile of shame ' has so much to do with the expense of the figure kit. I do a lot of 54/ 90/100mm Napoleonic and they are prestige figures with a 'prestige' purchase price... so just as you described they sit and are not done. Your pointed description help to 'burst the bubble' Thanks!

The timing of this video’s release is incredibly auspicious. All these thoughts started creeping in last night while working on some Legion models. Paint was getting everywhere it wasn’t supposed to, things were taking longer than I was expecting, my wet palette wouldn’t cooperate, etc, etc. Looking back, I was creating every excuse I could dream up to keep from painting bland, off white armor and lost sight of the final product. This video was a great eye-opener.

I really wasn't expecting such solid advice on living with anxiety from a model painting channel. I don't paint models but I find big life decisions and projects agonizing to the point of paralysis because of the distorted thinking patterns you described. The only way to get through insurmountable-feeling tasks is to start with teeny tiny baby steps - picking out colours and putting on the base coat, so to speak. Oh, and talk to a doctor - anxiety is a disease and it can be treated. My only regret is waiting until I was in my 30s to admit I needed help.

I finished a War Dog moirax recently, not a big mini but it’s a forgeworld kit. The airbrushing, weathering, oil washing all went extremely easily but then I started freehanding chaos marks on the lobstered carapace and my heart sank. It really felt like I was ruining an otherwise stellar mini. It also didn’t help that I’d started sponging on battle damage and it wasn’t quite there. All those airbrush blends and subtle shading from the oil wash? Gone, or very difficult to reinstate! What did I do? I regrouped, calmed down and stayed the course. I ended up rectifying the crooked aspects of the chaos mark and fully committing to the battle damage. Finally the mini met the standard I’d hoped. I’m by no means an inexperienced painter but every new step forward can still be met by an element of fear. Best thing to do is believe in yourself and push through.

I think the best advice you give in this video is just keep painting. a few months ago i started painting some dominions for my battle sisters army, and about 90% of the way though the basecoats i got overwhelmed by how many mistakes i needed to fix before i could move onto wsshes and highlights. they sat unpainted for about 5 months and that whole time i got almost nothing done. then, last month, i decided to just forget about them and paint a few new charcter models i was really excited to paint, but had been putting off sincei wasnt yet finished with my dominons. i finished them very quickly, and after that i was able to finish up my dominons pretty quickly too.

For me it is the amount of time I know it will take for me to accept the final product. I don't mind long projects really it just when I have smaller jobs around, I tend to attack those knowing they will be game ready soon. Been working on some knights and have enjoyed the process. I find for me having multiple projects at the same time breaks the monotony. Which allows a break from time to time. Thanks for your content, always appreciated.

@stefan020290
@stefan020290 2 года назад
To be honest, I have way more hesitation when it comes to foot soldiers. Big models are more often easier to paint and way more forgiving. Compare an imperial knight to a space marine captain. Both are centerpiece models although to a different scale. A captain has tiny, finicky details, that you want to paint to the best of your abilities. If you post it online, everyone sees every tiny little mistake you make. Compare that to a knight, where it is way harder to completely mess up. A small mistake isn't as noticable and since I tend to weather my models very much, these little mistakes are easy to cover up (painted over the edge while doing the trim? Eh, can be chipped armour later). Although I have to say, I like the more subtle models and not the extremely busy ones. The Void Dragon for example looks cool, but the amount of detail would be too much for my liking.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 2 года назад
I feel that for sure. I would rather paint a knight than a smaller space marine character all day. I think it comes down to your own feelings though, like what intimidates you more as a painter. Cost, size, whatever it is, it can be tough to just get going sometimes.
@Bluecho4
@Bluecho4 2 года назад
While a high rez picture posted online will let people see the tiny details, on the tabletop no one is going to see them. Not from multiple feet away and probably in poor lighting.
@stefan020290
@stefan020290 2 года назад
@@Bluecho4 while you are definitely right, it maybe is also a me-problem. I tend to keep my face really close to a small scale character when I paint one. You usually don't do that with larger models, so you won't notice mistakes right away.

I never had the words to properly describe how I felt, until this video. Cognitive distortion is the biggest reason behind me not actually painting my new Mawloc, or re-atempting my Hive Tyrant. I was so displeased with the finished product, I didn't paint the Mawloc for its own safety, nor try again with the tyrant. But spore mines, termagaunts, hormigaunts, etc, the smaller ones were so easy for me to do because I didn't have those thoughts. What you are saying in this video also translates to what I’m doing while I’m watching. Sat here at work in Photoshop trying to edit a particularly tricky product image. It’s similar to applying paint to a mini in a way. Where you spend ages looking at the image as it’s progressing and you can see the flaws and hate the image as you are working on it. But I know I can step backwards in the history and re attempt something. Or start again if needs be.

yup, i really get overwhelmed when painting a large component to a army. thankfully i solve it by painting it while it's still in parts and focus on those

if the maw crusha wasn't so expensive it looks like a really fun model to paint.

I've never felt paint anxiety with expensive models (because all models are expensive to me), but it has happened to me with models that I REALLY like. It's the "I'm not good enough" fear.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 2 года назад
For sure, the im not good enough voice creeps in a lot for me, for a lot of minis, but once I start putting paint down and working my way through I start to realize that the steps I take to paint any model still apply in the same way with a really cool one. Just gotta keep working through those steps until it’s done. And sure, you will be a better painter later, but you won’t be if you never paint that model, gotta get the practice in on all models in order to know how to paint the next one :)

The tufts are army painter, I can’t remember which type, but I think it’s just the regular grass ones, not like burnt grass or spring whatever, just normal.

Boy, ain't that the truth! I've been through and still experience all the things you mention here, and I find that the best antidote to that is just to plunge in headfirst before I get too paralyzed with fear and just start slinging paint. Works for me, anyway. Oh, and do Bloodywood RAWK or what? I like them a LOT.
@eBayMiniatureRescues

Bloodywood is super good! I definitely like the plunge in headfirst approach, that does help me as well, once the paint starts flowing I can’t help myself but keep going :)

A very nice, and different paint scheme on this beast, Casey! Great job! If I may ask, do you do anything with your pigment powders to set them? I'm always been confused if they need something additional, or if they can just be left and they stay on okay?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 2 года назад
Thanks! You can set them with a very light dusting of varnish, if the powder gets too wet it goes weird, but you can also just let it ride. The powder will come off over time, but not a ton so it’s usually alright.

This is true, over the winter, I snagged a Verminlord NIB for $35 and I ended up building it and painting it in a three day span and did some basing and TMM that was outside my usual comfort zone and I know its because of the sale price. Had I paid full price, no way would I have experimented around nearly as brazenly. Same with my endless spells. Had I paid full price, no way would I dump and entire jar of texture paint on my Gravetide etc, so there's def a correlation here
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 2 года назад
Pretty much why I buy off of eBay! It takes the pressure off and you can really get in there and try whatever you want! It’s so weird how just the price can change how you think about it. The more I’ve gone for it the better I’ve felt about brand new models too, so it’s been pretty helpful to source minis second hand for so long :)

Your camera and framing are on point Casey, but I think it might be time to upgrade the audio. Not sure if it's the hardware or the mixing, but there's a bit of crunch to it that isn't quite meeting the quality of the rest of your presentation.

I have those thoughts about regular models. It's because of a lifetime of always being judged on performance. Where something is only worth doing if you're good at it and can make money from it. That really makes things that I once enjoyed doing feel a lot less desirable. It takes a lot of will power to push through that mental conditioning. Also, peep that @Bloodywood t-shirt
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 2 года назад
I know exactly how you feel, like, exactly. Granted, I turned this hobby into a type of job for myself, but I paint because I love doing it. If this channel didn’t exist I’d still be doing it. Sometimes it can be tough to push through and do a hobby that is purely for you to enjoy yourself, but you, as a human being, need time to recharge and feel good about you. I feel like if I make a mental note when I sit down to do hobby that this is my time, this doesn’t have to mean anything more than some fun alone time, then I can clear my head and not worry about why I’m hobbying, just have fun painting for the sake of it. Just keep pushing through man, the more you get into the right space when you paint the more enjoyable it becomes :)

Had this issue with using my new sable brush (they are getting pricey). I was so afraid of ruining a 15$ brush.I kept telling my self I would use it for just the best HQ models and other better models. Finally I just did it and took it down and used it. Such a world of difference compared to cheap brushes. I may have only used it for just the last paint on the model. Your point about just jump in there and do get the paint down, really helps. It just a model get some paint on it.

I find Warhammer miniatures in general take a lot of time to paint because they pack in so much detail. Detail is nice but I have to alternate miniatures I paint because Warhammer burns me out.

I know what you mean. Some of the models they make have so much stuff on them that it’s almost impossible to decide what to do. I tend to stay away from those models unless I feel really motivated to put in the time.

I tend to work my way up towards bigger centerpiece models with smaller, less important models using the same color scheme to figure out which colors I like and how I want to use them. Before I paint my Great Unclean One, I'll paint a couple Plague Marines and a Myphitic Blight Hauler, for Guilliman it's 10 Heavy Intercessors painted as Ultramarines.

Those are pretty rad models though. Probably best thing to do is prep them and have them near your station, that way you can just throw some paint at one of them every so often, that’s what I’d do anyways.

I like to give myself lots of breaks when painting a large model. I'll probably spend a day or two working on it, then pause and start again in two or more weeks. If I was to work on it continually it would drive me nutty

I have those feelings even about the smaller models thst have a lot of detail. I picked up a chaos space marine character in a trade (and I don't collect chaos space marines). I'm not sure what he is, besides big. He has flaming skulls and is jumping. Point is, wow, super intimidating model. It sits, primed and highlighet, assembled minus his backpack and staff, on my hobby desk, taunting me. Thinking about wet-blending all of those flames is ths opposite of painting bravely.

@eBayMiniatureRescues 2 года назад
Yeah the small highly detailed minis get me all the time. It’s hard to know where to start. Chaos Space marines in general are like that all the time too. I usually like to get an overall color and then fill in the details (armor trim 🤢) that at least gets me started and if I like the overall color then it feels a bit easier to keep going.
