It’s said that it’s better to be lucky than good, that may be, but a bit of experience also comes in handy to help you out when unexpected luck gets you into a sticky situation.
Back on the local river in glorious spring weather. Have the fish woken up up yet? Check out the video to find out!

What a beautiful spot! Gin clear water and the occasional sea-trout to boot. You are a very lucky man to have that on your doorstep. Lovely video as well, thank you for taking the time to make and share it. You now have another subscriber.

Yeah, Arbroath Angling Club. Glad you enjoyed the video. I know my videos have encouraged a few more anglers to join the club (they told me). It's a question of balancing pressure with the club's need to recruit new blood. Great to have it to oneself, but clubs need members to survive. 🙂

Great fish Fred so the wee river has a run of Seatrout and Salmon. Do you fish for them later in the year (autumn). How many Sea trout and Salmon run the river. Tight lines for the rest of the season. I remember fishing the Spring with Dark Olives very enjoyable. AUS subscriber.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
There is a small run of salmon and sea trout in the autumn but in common with most Scottish rivers it is a shadow of what it once was. Usually the season is closed before there is enough water to bring the fish in. 🙂

Enjoyed your video, I live in arbroath and would like to try my hand at small stream fishing. What outfit are you using, also do have to wade to fish this river.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it. I use a 9 foot 4 weight set up, but anything will do. You do have to wade to fish the water effectively
@fieldsman3307
@fieldsman3307 2 года назад
hi Fred, as I am rubbish at nymping I intend to practice more so can you tell me what size nymph you use on your local river assuming it's tungsten bead would it be 2 3 or 4mm, thanks Mike. Awaiting next video.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Depends on the water Mike,. Anything from 1 to 4 mm most often 2 or 3 mm. I always fish the heavy nymph on the tail and a lighter, unweighted one on the dropper. Just keep practicing and it will come. Casting these heavy nymphs is a bit cumbersome no matter how often you do it! 🙂

You managed to net It! We've all had those experiences whe we are at 6's and 7's! I remember sliding down a muddy bank flat on my back with a hooked fish and somehow managing to net it while still being unable to get back on my feet.
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
@@simonhughes7141 It's those kind of experiences that make days even more memorable. at least I had the drag set properly on the reel this time which just makes things easier to control. 😊

Remember how I was saying that I was gutted that I didn't get out fishing the other day? Well, I went out today and got more than halfway there before realising that I had picked up the wrong rod. After an infuriating return journey I made it to the water, but it was a bit too low and gin clear, so no luck at the first few marks, although I did manage to lose a couple of flies. Went upriver a bit and met a guy who was having a great day. In the secret pool I showed him last year, using the method I had taught him. Would he move over and let me fish it? Would he buggery. Moved a bit further and saw a few fish rising, so I changed over from wets to dries and immediately got snagged in a tree, pulled too hard and snapped my mainline just above the loop. Went to the bank to fix it, almost fell in, dropped my camera and cracked my knee against a rock, tearing a hole right down to the bone. Can't wait to go out tomorrow in my newly repaired waders to test my new line. Fishing? Pah!
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
😆 Great story. that's the beauty about fly fishing even the bad days are memorable. Tomorrow you'll have a better day than me - I'll be in the eye clinic at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for a check up. Won't catch much there I hope. 😋

Caught 4 today on my first outing on my wee local … I will admit it’s spinning 😅… can’t fly fish on the loch unless the wind in favour as it’s deep one end and shallow as in 6-7 inches the other but thoroughly enjoyed it I’m lucky my local has 2 massive lochs and ( my secret 🤫 one ) if you know you know local kids have destroyed 2 dams with car tires beer bottles it’s sad to see walking past them today decent midge hatch no rises in dams when I was 16-17 used to thrive 😔
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 года назад
Well done Stewart, that's the season underway now. 😊 It is a real pity to find trash dumped around our waters, some people have no respect for these wild places or even seem to realise how lucky we are to have them. 😪
@Followthepath89
@Followthepath89 2 года назад
@@wildfisher excuse the language in my shorts I posted on RU-vid I work in a factory locally it’s just my tongue but I was going to make future videos so I’ll rain it in … locally nobody knew about these dams having fish in them when I was younger me and my friends learned how to fly fish on them with great success before we ventured onto the bigger lochs … I walked past the 2 we normally used to fish and there was no life hatches flying around me …. No rises I don’t know if they have been over fished I hope not because they where full to the brim of wild brownies not massive 6 inches normal but good to get your feet in the water I was disgusted by what I seen today plastic bags beer cans car tires they have been destroyed all but one that they don’t know about which is to far for them to walk to thank god …. I fish barbless and return all my fish today was a good day but seeing what I saw I was a bit miffed
