I love listening to the koto but I think it's a shame most koto players are not payed well as they should for all their hard work. I know a beautiful and talented koto and shamisen player in Tokyo but she struggling every day because she plays but she doesn't get paid well or doesn't get paid at all for performances 😔
I heard this beautiful instrument in Mihoyo's Inazuma concert video, where they used it for the Inazuma enemy fight BGM... Such delicate, yet such a strong instrument
As a musician myself, I would love to see other instruments from other parts of the world, this in fact struck me the most. I have been studying world music for a bit in secondary school, but non other than this. I do play the violin and piano and to me this is one of THE most stricking instruments I would love to play and just to compare the western traditional string instruments to eastern string instruments. If I would go to Japan, this would be one of my first things to do on my list when I go there.
I love japanese culture so much! The music is so beautiful, i once saw a video of these two woman playing the shamisen and sounded so beautiful i felt like crying. It also looks so interesting to learn to play, i love the food, clothes, music, culture i love it so, much so pretty! Their Koto playing sounded so beautiful despite being beginners and the peformance at the end even thought we only heard a part of it it sounded absolutely amazing!!💓 I hope one day to visit japan and experience the culture myself!
I would LOVE to see a crossover with TwoSet Violin and your channel!! You are both such honest, beautiful channels (they obviously have more of a comedy base and you have more of an exploratory base) it could be something really magical!
I love Japanese classical music very much. I love all the traditional and classical Japanese musical instruments. They are so very beautiful. I remember the musical piece SAKURA for many years and it is very beautiful
Thank you! I first learned about the koto the first time I read "The Tale of Genji" and "The Pillowbook of SEI Shonagon." Then, in the 1990s, I heard a CD by a group called "Ancient Future," entitled "Asian Fusion."; my favorite piece on the CD is entitled " Empress," and I was hooked!
Thank you for sharing Shogo-San, I enjoy learning about your culture & language. My sensei Miku told me I should immerse myself if I wanna learn Japanese. ( with my PTSD which causes memory issues which causes me to forget & struggle learning Japanese)
Very lovely and interesting to watch! I read The Tale of Genji last year and there are many descriptions of various performances on the koto, so I really enjoyed to see this lesson and learn more about how it is played. :)

I just start watching anime "Kono Oto Tomare" 2 days ago which it's a music genre anime and the characters there are playing koto. I hope you can introduce shamisen in your next video! 😄
Sorry for a late comment, but I really loved this video! As a koto player, this brought me back to when I was first starting and Sakura used to be the song that I used as example when trying to explain it, because many have heard that song without knowing it. Rokudan was one of the first bigger pieces that I learned too. I do implore that everyone please watch the full Rokudan link because it shows so many ways to play notes such as how to strike the strings as well as the left hand altering/blurring notes based on when it is pushed/pulled. These techniques is what takes koto above the just 13 strings (how hard it can be) to sounds and difficulty that can't be recreated elsewhere. Like Shogo said, please try this instrument. Once you do though, you may find that you can no longer live in a world without it. 😸 It was also nice to see mention of the Kokyu. Sadly, that is harder to find music for because in many cases, it has been replaced by the shakuhachi flute.
Yes I was waiting for a video like this. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. As a musician I am string instruments are my weaknesses. Doesn't matter if it is plucked, picked, hammered or bowed. I love them all, and I want all of them too.
This is one of my favorite instruments to listen to. I have been in love with the sound of the koto since I was little. ❤️ This is such a treat to be able to watch and live vicariously through you!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. The word "gorgeous" was very fitting. The Koto is one of my favorite non-western instruments and I am extremely happy you were able to create a very entertaining and stimulating video with everyone involved. Thank you!
I admire the application of the Japanese people. It seems so easy, seeing you guys learning so quickly. Your culture is beautiful! Thank you so much for bringing us so much of it By the way, you 2 played very well, congratulations! 👍
Such a beautiful instrument! Thank you, Shogo, for showing us some of the very, vast, traditions, of your culture. I’ve never been able to travel to Japan, but it’s been a blast learning from you (it only furthers my desire to explore and learn about Japan). Thank you, sir!
Wow, すごいですね。I always see this one on some animes but not on a vlog like this. If possible しょごさん to please make a vlog on しみす instrument and performance as well. Love your vlogs so much! Please make more family vlogs with your kids please. 😊
I'm really impressed with how well they picked it up, and the koto, as an instrument, sounds beautiful!!... but the song, Sakura Sakura sounds so flat--like Klingon Opera! 😅 Also, compared to other RU-vidrs, I think your videos are by far the best organized--you must have graduated from college very recently :) (from my personal experience, I've noticed that, as the years pass after graduation, we gradually lose the enthusiasm for preparing elaborate, well-structured presentations)
Koto has to be my FAVORITE instrument, or as I've heard it called a "Dragon's Harp", is there any truth to that? Anyone? Not asking for a friend, either 😉😂 Edit: I've also heard it called a Dragons spine harp as well 😊
Is it " sakura , sakura yayoi no Sora wa mi-watsu kagiri kasumi Ka kumo Ka nioi zo izuru izaya izaya mini yukan"? Bk I'm leaning this with my music teacher ( she Japanese actually it me and the class we want to learn this music)
i love the sound of the koto. thanks for sharing. but I have a question, you said in previous video giving 'naked money' in japan is not culturally accepted. what do you do with solo performers on the street or at events?
Play a variety of stringed instruments and drums and I've always wanted to learn koto and kumi daiko. Unfortunately for me the cost of a decent, well made koto or a wadaiko are too much expensive
It all sounded very nice to me. Kazu and Tomoko did very well. But I had no idea that koto were that large. I pictured them as an instrument that fits in your lap. Are there smaller ones or am I thinking of something different?
Maybe you had in mind our Finnish national instrument kantele. It is a bit similar to koto but has metal strings and is smaller - especially the traditional, most simple kantele which only has five strings.
