I was skeptical but the Muratiic acid was AMAZING. My first instinct was to try a propane torch because I assumed that the combination of Aluminum's low melting temp and high rate of thermal expansion would make it pop it loose and drip Aluminum on the floor. I gave up out of fear of over heating the crank. The only thing I would do differently next time would be to apply bug spray on myself first because bugs were biting me and I couldn't risk swatting them with my acid covered gloves LOL
I have only had to 1 one like that on a generator and it was my fault for not checking the oil before i started it. I was half asleep after a 15 work day and now i make sure to check the oil in any 4 stroke engine before i start it
Hi, thanks for this vid had a cylinder go down on my pro XS 250 merc and it was coated with aluminum. Took about 2 hours and a good honing and she’s ready for a new piston.
Check on youtube for a man named James Condon, he works on and rebuilds generators. He has several videos on using Muriatic Acid on crankshafts. This was a good video and I appreciate all the ones you have out.
Hey Jeff this is awesome! How did it work out in the end? I'm confident that it worked just fine? I was just staring at the 454 dollar crank that came out of my locked up Hobart Champion 10000 watt generator / welder due to just using it now and then without checking the oil and it just hit me that the aluminum is stuck to the crank and the crank journal is not likely hurt. How to get that aluminum off without a machine shop was the next question which led me strait to your video here with a quick search on youtube. I think I'll try this I'd much rather buy a rod than the crankshaft.
that eng had to be run with no oil alum. melts at 1100-1200 deg i think norrmal running dont get that hot you may be able to heat with a torch and wipe it off
Hello. my experience would steer me towards sodium hydroxide ( lye) solution will dissolve aluminum and has no effect on steel what so ever. It is how machinists clean aluminum from files . keep making the videos . Great.
I have the same thing with my old Kohler I thought the crank was ruined then I was looking at it one day and it acured to me the aluminium had just welded its self on to the crank .
@@JeffsLittleEngineService ya really bad stuff to breath I'm just glad I can save it.the guy I naught it from hade a full custom build the shaft has ben ground on and cleaned up and it has hade weights added to it so it is fully balanced fresh rebuild ported polished .no balance gear or governor .a friend of mine was revvng it I guess he got carried away then I got a phone call about my tractor not running anymore .that was 2 years ago I just took the engine apart last week .I'm hoping and praying it will all b good . Might save up for a custom rod with bearings
Battery acid is sulfuric acid. Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric is also sold as a drain cleaner, and hydrochloric/muriatic as a concrete cleaner. Both pretty nasty.
