The Mauser 1871 was the first rifle designed by the Mauser brothers to be adopted by the Imperial German Army. For today's shooters, commercial ammunition is unavailable. Even components for reloaders are hard to come by with no sources of brass cases. Researching online, cases can be formed from various others, notably 45-70 Government and 300 Winchester Magnum. In this video I test both to see which works the best.

I use .45-90, turn rim to 15mm and anneal, then resize checking headspace carefully while small steps in reforming. Once set, tighten the lock ring on your die and form at that depth. no h-s issues and properly sized to your rifle. Loading, rifle (* preferred loading) * -Powder, IMR 4198, 31.6 gr (2.5 cc) -Powder, IMR SR4759, 28.2 gr (2.8 cc) -Powder, Accur 5744, 29.1 gr (2.2 cc) -Powder, FFG, 77gr (original loading) -Projectile, 0.446 dia., 340gr LFN -Brass, Use .45-90, rims to 15mm

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I also use 45-70 brass in my 1871 Mauser. I recently loaded and fired some cartridges with black powder and pistol primers. I used fireformed brass and didn't resize them, yet the primers backed out on all of them upon firing. It's as though the cartridges weren't held firmly against the bolt face. So, as you demonstrated, I bought some 0-rings to compensate for the thin 45-70 rim. They have a 10mm inner diameter and are 1.5mm thick, fit on the brass nicely, and the bolt closes without any significant effort. That should cure any excessive head space problems.

Update: I reloaded some more rounds with the same components and placed o-rings on the brass. They corrected the head-space problem caused by the thin rims and the primers didn't back out. Problem solved. Thank you for the o-ring tip.

Love your content and the low key delivery! That snap ring is genius! Intend to overcomplicate things and probably would never have thought of such an elegantly simple solution. Nicely done!

Thank you for sharing. It's good to see someone else using 45-70 brass. I call my shortened version the 11.3x53mm. To compensate for the thin rims I back the sizing die off a full turn and the Mauser bolt has enough camming power to easily chamber the brass, essentially making it a crush fit in the chamber. Then I neck size for subsequent reloading. I may put some o-rings on my brass as an added precaution. I always use CCI-200 rifle primers with both smokeless and black powder loads and never had a failure to fire.

I had all kinds of FTF with my 71 and K71, I switched to LP primers never a problem again, very common for the 71s. I make my brass from 45-90 brass, turn the rim until it will fit in a 11MM case holder, round of the edge of the turned rim to ease the extractor over the rim. Adjust your sizing die so it will set the shoulder back just far enough to chamber. I have a bunch of dental rubber bands for braces I place one over the base for the first firing to center it, and push it back against the bolt face. After they are fire formed they will headspace just fine on the shoulder no need to worry about a thicker rim. Either don't size or neck size after that.

Good info, thanks. I'll have to adjust my sizing die to neck size only after the first forming.

I use 43 Mauser cases made out of 7mm Rem Mag myself. Extraction is anaemic but that brass was a hell of a lot cheaper than trying to find Bertram for anything other than a king's ransom or using Dominion brass that's up to 50-60 years old. It is what it is!
@George_Lewis
@George_Lewis 2 месяца назад
Have you, or anyone else using 45-70 brass, had any case failures? I've had 4 out of 20 cases develop a 9-10mm lengthwise crack about 12mm ahead of the rim. Two were loaded with black powder and failed during the first firing, and the other two cracked with a medium load (1200 fps) of Accurate 5744. The W-W 45-70 brass expanded from .500 to .516 during firing and it apparently stressed them too much. I will resize some Remington 45-70 brass and see if they hold up better. EDIT 5/19/24: I mistakenly wrote that I had case failures with Remington 45-70 brass... It was actually W-W brass. I corrected my comments.

Nice work, love vids like this. It's really rewarding when you can get a gun back to action that is nearly impossible to find ammo for...and even harder when you cant even find brass. Im working on making ammo for 6.5x53mmR Dutch (not as hard as this)

I have an M71/84 Mauser. I make my cases from Starline .45-90 brass. I turn the rims on my lathe, size and trim to final length. Then load a light charge and fire form. I have had zero failures to fire and I don't use O-rings or, anything else for that matter. After fire forming, I don't set the resizer all the way down. This leaves the shoulder in the fire formed position allowing the case to now headspace on the shoulder not, the rim.
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects 11 месяцев назад
I'll have to try that if I come across more 45-90 cases. Thanks for the tip

I have a 71/84 and use belted magnum brass to make my .43 Mausers. Its pretty labor intensive but I've never had one not work. You have to file down the belt and use a retaining clip for a rim but i've yet to have one fail and they extract almost every time, I even use the tube magazine. I dont use C-clips but spiral retaining rings
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects 8 месяцев назад
Good idea. Those fit around the extractor groove just like the snap rings in the video?
@sogmalukem2745
@sogmalukem2745 7 месяцев назад
@@rakumprojects Yes. Only thing is you'll end up destroying the retaining ring if you ever have to remove it, but they're so cheap it's not much of an issue.

I wonder if some hard silver solder would have helped with the ring method.

I actually have a few pieces that I soldered a ring of wire to then machined into a rim, but I haven't loaded them because I'm unsure of what the heat did to the temper of the brass.

Since it is going to be shot from the same rifle all the time, do you really need to size the entire case or can you get by just sizing the neck?
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects 11 месяцев назад
That would be ideal however the chamber on my rifle is large enough that I can't avoid sizing the body of the brass with the full length sizing die
@RussellHoughton
@RussellHoughton 9 месяцев назад
You need to solder those rings. I made some with copper seal washers. Now I just use 45-90 brass
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects 9 месяцев назад
Did you shoot them and how did they hold up? I actually made a few with copper rings held on by solder then machined. But then I reconsidered shooting them due to the heat potentially changing the metal properties.
@RussellHoughton
@RussellHoughton 9 месяцев назад
@rakumprojects they hold up fine. I often Aneal the bases of old brass and over time it re work hardens. I just wouldn't do it to a high pressure case and don't use more heat then you need. I've done it with 32 remington without any issues

With black powder you don't want there to be any room left in the case. The double wad and grease takes up room and provides additional lubrication.
