That sub was rigorously tested and went through a professional development cycle. It was not independently certified but that does not mean it wasn’t agonizingly poured over. You are talking out of your ass

This wasn't an accident. It was preventable negligence and an arrogant abuse of the system. How NOT to design and test a submersible. -- (as experts have stated) -- The reckless choices of using carbon fiber for the hull - and gluing it (epoxy) to titanium - and the hull's shape "tube" & window were all points of failure. And the several dives weaken the materials.

When I saw the epoxy being layed-in with a trowel and the Titanium ring being lowered on to it I immediately wanted to dive it 😏

It is absolute joker design. He got only 1 titanium ring at each end. Both rings fitted to CF hull in male-female type joint. We can see the titanium rings fitted as the the female section hence both rings didn't even act as stiffener/framing. We know cylinder shape like that has weakest point at the middle. If He cared to spent some more money to get 2 extra inner rings for the middle section, install longitudinal stiffener connecting front inner ring, middle inner ring and aft inner ring all arround circumference of the cylinder skin, I think the submersible at least can last longer at that pressure.

*DELAMINATION is when microscopic tears between the fibers in carbon fiber composite start to build up over time with each contraction and expansion from diving and surfacing. Carbon fiber accumulates damage over time that cannot be (easily) inspected. Steel, on the other hand, returns to its original shape. So does ceramic and acrylic. Damage does not accumulate from one dive to the next. With CF, each dive adds new tears and the old tears remain. Once it gets to the point where water presses into the delaminated layers, the delamination intensifies quickly until catastrophic failure. For this reason, composites are avoided for deep sea vessels in favor of contiguous materials.*

Carbon fiber is GREAT for building a pressure vessel that has to hold pressure IN (high tensile strength). It's terrible for building a pressure vessel that has to hold pressure OUT (low compressive strength).

Even Titanium hulls are constantly inspected, the rigors of such depths plays a number on all pressure vessels, regardless what material they're made out of.

@@obe124 Oh absolutely, but not for repeated cycles without inspection. This sub was built to have center section (The carbon bit) replaced for every expedition, which never happened. And even then it was still too much of a risk. In addition it was a cylindrical shape, not as strong as spherical, so another "no-no" for deep dives. And the list continues like that, one thing after the next, either one of which is enough to spell certain death at not even 1/30th the depth Titanic resides at.

MANY DID say not to get in it..only the gag order re: the previous court cases after Rush/OceanGate fired their own director who, as tasked with, looked into & reported on his concerns re: safety issues + also re: all the efforts the director made to get info deliberately hidden from him about the integrity of the viewing portal..there's so much to this tragedy that it seems many are not aware of.

No doubt this accident will come down to the folly of using carbon fibre -under such extreme pressures a composite material presents risks and hasn’t been adequately tested. And there should be rules of some sort even in international waters ensuring standards for vessels carrying passengers.

Agree he seconded the safety factors for the sake of costs, running quickly to make a million $$$$ for every dive made by the vessel , this apathetic expediency cost him his life and the lives of the others. 🙁 Problem too is that the outer shell cover would hide any fractures in the carbon fibre core

Require certification of all vessels that carry passengers and make the companies involved in high risk adventures post a bond for rescue services. Regardless if they operate in international waters the company should be regulated by the country in which it is registered.

​@@rightwingcollectiveiq what is the point for a control to work under 4000 m deep? if the control should be in the same place were humans are which is at 1 atm pressure. If you have 400 Atm of pressure inside the cabin, then it would not matter if the control fails.. because everyone would be death. Also.. we can make the argument that those control are design to prevent fires or other issues that may put users on danger. After all, those are sell over the whole world, if something is wrong in the design everyone is on risk. How do you know if you design your own control if it does not have more chances to fail or generate a short circuit?

How would the ship owners know about how safe or unsafe this submersible was tho? They were just hired to tow the platform with the submersible on it to the Titanic wreck site. Maybe the submersible shouldn't have been towed out all across the ocean. I thought something like this submersible should have been carried onboard the ship as I seen other pictures of it on a rack/grate on the back of a ship before. Did the company do it different this time if so why?

Although its easy to count up the cost, remember that most of the responders were Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force elements that would be getting paid whatever they were doing. To use those resources in a real situation like this provides an excellent opportunity in terms of gaining experience, coordination between differences of different services and problem solving.

it would not have passed certification on the view port alone, it was at a depth over twice it's rating anyway, and that is the simplest answer, that the view port gave way and blew the two titanium end caps off ???

The fact that this is so dangerous only adds to the allure. Start up culture works best at sea level, yes I agree. With great wealth comes a sense that not even the laws of physics apply. Next it will be 'Blue Origin' that blows up. Hamish has been in that tin can - A question to ask is how does this affect space exploration on the private side? All those trying to pencil their initials on the Moon, Mars etc. have disrupted and destroyed industries on Earth (where they hate humanity) so they can play in space. This Titan is an anomaly that puts to bed a lot of repeats - but the question is: Private enterprise blasting off to space... OK, regulated endeavors - But the gov't needs to step in and take charge - instead of allowing private industry to explore worlds for the betterment of their bottom line. Greed and ego destroyed the Titan - Human 'virtues', so lets talk about our greed ....

the simplest explanation would be the view port which was rated at less than half the depth of where the vessel was at, just cracked and gave way, the in rush of water blew the two titanium end caps off ???

That might be true, but I doubt it would be allowed on any offshore installation or ship where "fire-safe certified" equipment is required. Any off the shelf piece of electronics that isn't certified can create sparks that can cause a fire. The fact that he used non-cerfified electronics all over the submersible is simply baffling. And I am sure that would have to be replaced if he ever wanted to get the submersible legally certified for passenger transport... which is why he didn't care about that. Now, fire wasn't the cause of this accident, but just because it was a different design flaw that destroyed it doesn't mean the fire hazard with all thise cheap electronics was nullified.

I just heard a friend of the CEO describing “cracking”sounds in the hull during its testing/ early dives in shallower waters, to which the CEO explained away to be “normal” or expected of carbon fiber materials!

But they keep referring to the "mothership" where Oceangate's staff were monitoring the event and in contact with the submersible. Are you inferring the staff was onboard the hired tow boat or did they have another Oceangate boat accompany the tow boat out to the site that was in contact with them?

It still passed the tests, in fact the same sub had already been to the titanic site before about 5 times or so, problem is most likely the material gradually wore out with each trip, until it completely cracked eventually, point is there was no way to tell when it would eventually fail

I know very little about engineering or physics but even I questioned many things, like the lack of gaskets where they joined those end caps to the tube & how 17 bolts to shuт the entrance seemed too few….oh & using carbon fiber (which seemed too thin to me).

I'm surprised they were able to successfully market their tourism service without meeting certification in a reasonably respected country. Many certifications are only voluntary and hence only market forces require them so could this just be a matter of ignorance by the consumers and not defining political governance of international waters?

you cant blame the passengers. they have traveled half across the globe without seeing the vessel up close. iam sure they questioned few things after arriving and even more after getting into the vessel in the middle of the ocean, but said eff it, looking at pilots experience chart and knowing that this company had many successfull dives in their portfolio. i blame the pilot, he should have never took that xbox controller in his hands.!

I mean, most tourists will research whatever place they are going to, whether it's the hotel quality or the safety of the city at night or whatever. As you should. Putting yourself in danger because of ignorance is one thing. Putting yourself in danger because of ignorance despite the information being readily available is quite another.

About the hull... carbon fiber strong under tension not compression, it was designed for a 7 inch thick hull, they got 5 inch thick. There was handles, tv screens and stuff bolted into the hull directly (weak points), there was light bars embedded in the hull.. wtf.. i watched the oceangate documentary, it actually looked comfortable in there , the passengers were enjoying the titanic experience despite a thruster installed backwards that made it go in circles

From a layperson perspective, the only suitable certification for Titan and the project involving taking paying customers down too visit Titanic, was one of complete insanity. Fully certified Insanity would be the fairest. Waiver to sign away a life, especially if a fan of Titanic persuading a son to go with him to see the shipwreck close up and in person as opposed to safely at home watching a Dr.Rob Ballard or a James Cameron video of her. His qualifications were in aerospace where the INSIDE of the vehicle is at higher pressure and the maximum differential is ONE bar. The way he talks about carbon fiber being the best material is entirely based on that - carbon fiber loves being in TENSION, not compression. The titanium end caps prevented the ends compressing, so there would have been irregular deformation from end to end, not great for composites which will ALWAYS have a point of failure, in this case about 15 cycles. Honestly, he approached this as if it was an aeroplane - does the carbon fiber make the hull stronger than just pure resin when it's COMPRESSED? I'm honestly not sure, I DO know that it's perfect for 787 and A350 fuselages 🤬

what i gather is that carbon composites are the wrong choice for submersibles. They work best under tension to keep internal forces in. It's quite similar to why no one anywhere ever has worn lululemon pants to make their booty look bigger.
