Legendary boat builder, Walter Schulz, swings by to give some straight talk and guidance about fixing Ran-day's sailboat. Dave Kirkpatrick of Edson Marine also stops by to help with some boat steering maintenance. It takes a village to fix this boat and I'm super grateful to have these resources available (and to share with you)

I don't miss Capt Q near as much when we're lucky enough to be blessed by Walter Schultzs presence and knowledge in a video!!! I really enjoy Walter, he's the kind of person who i can get along flawlessly with because he doesn't beat around the bush when speaking. He's direct and straight to the point with a laugh thrown in there to make sure a person is enjoying themselves while learning. Thank you Walter for agreeing to share some of your valuable time and extremely helpful knowledge. God bless you and Ran-dayy

Oh yea. Wanted to mention. Am refurbishing a 95' Honda Nighthawk cb750 with (sort of) your same theme of Adventure and Outdoors. But, course, Walter. I love Walter. "Make it fun." Got my Hunter 23. Nice trailer, all fitted out with great sails and rigging, FOR FREE in my front yard. (not gonna lie). It's all gotta go in the water. For me at this time it's about going along the water. Yea on a motorcycle. So I will think of you as I peruse Hampton Beach, Prescott Park, maybe Old Orchard Beach, York Beach. Yea ~. Good enough for me. Walter making a template helping with you. You being so patient with Walter. So nice to see. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. Just great. ~ Ran Day~. ‼

My boat-neighbor had a propane explosion in the Marina, San Diego , May '22. It was powerful enough to separate the main deck from the hull, dis-mast and blow out all the ports. Man ("...and his little dog too!") were very lucky that day... just some singed eyebrows and such. 36' Hunter. Don't do anything dumb, different or dangerous.

Hi Randall, regarding the side with the two nicopress sleeves instead of wire rope clips (bulldogs, whatever you like to call them), the two sleeves look very much like 3/16" size bc of their length (7/32" sleeves are shorter), but the cable Looks bigger than 3/16. And it looks smoother than 7x19. I couldn't read the caliper display but is Dave planning to use 3/16"? Is the old cable 7x19 or "Tiller rope"? How about the wheel shaft bearings in the pedestal, have you considered renewing those? Thanks to Dave for coming out, Edson customer service has always been stellar. We've used tempered masonite coated with epoxy for propane lockers and it has worked out well. Personally, I prefer to use One Piece propane hose from the stove to the regulator (bought with end fittings attached) instead of copper tube, but I am not second guessing Walter. We make the holes through the bulkheads etc oversize and float the hose through the holes with home made membranes. Every time I see your aft cockpit, I try to imagine what kind of coaming or drain would stop water from pouring off the weather deck onto those seats; so far I can't think of an easy solution to that issue. A coaming could create a lake there, and would bring other issues, like making it even harder to climb out of that cockpit. Thanks, all the best, Marty

Oops! How to say I don't care for solenoids without saying "I don't care for solenoids". I believe in turning it off at the tank. Elsewhere, I Love solenoids, and relays. How many people do you know that put them on bilge pumps? Thank you, this is like watching a Master Class on boatbuilding. Walter is a real treat to spend time with.

Hi! The steering cable is 1/4" 7x19 wire. 7x19 is really the only construction that works for steering cable, anything else is too stiff and would cause trouble. Wheel shaft bearings need to be replaced every ~10 years, these will be.
