50 years ago I lived in the Nazi SS building in Nurnberg as a member of the second armored Cavalry. I have been to the courthouse of the trials, I have stood on the podium Hitler gave speeches from, I have been to Dachau and I have been saying since Regan the extreme right doesn't want to govern they want to dictate. Amen my sister. We all have to put political parties aside to stand together and fight for our great United States of America and democracy. Like never before in my lifetime has the threat of fascism become so real. We got to fight and vote against all Republicans/GOP (God Opposition Party)/Orange Cults members. Count me in. As a US Army veteran countless soldiers fought and died in WW2 to defeat Hitler and fascism. We will win again!!!

As a German, I'd never have thought that the USA would one day become what they once actively fought, a Nazi dictatorship. Every single US soldier who lost his life in WW II over 70 years ago fighting the Nazi dictatorship is turning over in his grave right now out of sheer disgust on how the GOP is worshiping Nazis in the US. I do not live in the US, nor do I have any special ties to the US. I can only ask all US citizens, don't allow this. Don't let history repeat. In World War II over 50 million people were killed because of my ancestors. Among them were 6 million Jews and 4 million other prisoners who were slaughtered by the Nazis. Don't you notice the parallels between the Third Reich and the current developments in the USA? Fundamental Christians burn books, angry mobs roam the streets of the towns and scream "Jews will not replace us", a party that sees itself as the chosen party with the chosen leader Donald Trump that will do anything to scare people into thinking Jews, foreigners, gays, and many others are a fundamental threat to their lives. Do you really not see how alike the GOP and the former NSDAP are now? I'm getting on with you, don't let the GOP lead you into a cruel future. Probably none of us will survive another world war.

Trump is finished because of his age. But Desantis is a real worry. No heart and a narccicist. Be worried America.

Great discussion. Since he came down that escalator it has been exhausting & difficult to hang on to hope. We couldn't even process the election before the right started promoting the Big Lie & then we had the first time the transfer of power was not peaceful. The violence of January 6th was horrifying & the gop continuing to downplay it is disturbing. It used to be that dems & republicans could disagree on policy but still work together for the American people.

I would also urge reading Umberto Eco's essay on Ur-Fascism. It's frightening because it seems like the republicans read it and went "yup" and have been using it as a road map, especially DeSantis

Ruth Ben-Giat just mentioned what we don’t say or even realize, and it should be said with pride, even if only to help push us through these hard few months. We collectively stopped our country from falling into authoritarian hands and few countries pull that off. We need to keep our spirits up, and that has been difficult. Let’s remember what we are fighting for.

Well. I got to the part about journalism. How can these so called news agencies blatantly lie and not be held accountable. I have family members that tell me they watch Fox News. I tell them to watch something else and they refuse. How can you get through to these people?

Good afternoon ladies I am a single white male, only with high school diploma and I'm also an army veteran, yes the stuff that Trump had stashed in different places at his Resort, I want to see him in jail asap!

Even if he lost again, he’s going to do the same thing, saying that was rigged.

Hopfully Trump ends up in jail and can't run. However desantis is almost as bad, even worse in some ways we really need high voter turnout to make sure our country doesn't turn into a fascist oligarchy/ theocracy. I don't want to live in that dystopian nightmare.

Fascist are right wing socialist...The Nazis nationalized like 600 businesses right off the bat and then controlled the means of production through intimidations, arrests, direct orders, use of slaves, and other methods all throughout their reign. They people were represented by the state ( which was more important than human/civil rights. the state rules supreme in fascism) and the state took control of the means of production to further the means of the state which through proxy are the people. That is the basic definition of socialism. Right now they are using the threat of socialism as the boogeyman of the left...when in reality they are pushing RIGHT wing socialism and the state before civil rights. This needs to be fought through our votes and political action. We need to be aware of this and stop it now.

We need to talk about authoritarianism and it’s similarities to religion.

I am so angry at the number of people both in the recent past and now, who are forced to hide for being truthful patriots. Evil cannot win, yet they seem to have the upper hand just now. Let's turn it around and right the world as it should be.

Among occasional others, this is one of the absolute best discussions I have heard in weeks. Thank you Lee and and Ruth for yet another enlightening--and frightening--talk on the imminent dangers we are facing. I really like Lee's statement about someone saying they have become 'a one issue voter'--removing Republicans from office _everywhere._ , because they cannot be entrusted with power. Couldn't agree more! We had better start heeding the words and suggestions of many of these scholars, academics, historians, psychologists/medical professionals (i.e., Dr. Bandy X. Lee), journalists, activists who are our 'canaries in the coal mine', sounding the warning that danger lies ahead and soon, and galvanize and stiffen our purpose to get out the vote for all reasonable Democrats/democrats, progressives; all with two feet in the world of reality, truth, facts, reason, and frankly, human decency, goodness and progress. It wouldn't hurt to have your bags packed ahead of 2024,...just in case.

This is scary for the poorer people of this country because we will suffer the most.
