From David Duke to Donald Trump: The Rise of ‘Middle-Finger Politics’

Donald Trump can seem like a political anomaly. You sometimes hear people describe his connection with his base in quasi-mystical terms. But really, Trump is an example of an archetype - the right-wing populist showman - that recurs across time and place. There’s Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Boris Johnson in Britain, Javier Milei in Argentina. And there’s a long lineage of this type in the United States too.
So why is there this consistent demand for this kind of political figure? And why does this set of qualities - ethnonationalist politics and an entertaining style - repeatedly appear at all?
John Ganz is the writer of the newsletter Unpopular Front (www.unpopularfront.news/) and the author of the forthcoming book “When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s (us.macmillan.com/books/978037...) .” In this conversation, we discuss how figures like David Duke and Pat Buchanan were able to galvanize the fringes of the Republican Party; Trump’s specific brand of TV-ready charisma; and what liberals tend to overlook about the appeal of this populist political aesthetic.
This episode contains strong language.

John Ganz far over-reaches in his take on Trump as a rakishly charming populist who has his finger on the pulse of American discontent. He extols Trump's supposed virtues, describing him as " charismatic, funny, highly intelligent," and that his movement is "joyful and a lot of fun." He compares him to an endearing mobster like Tony Soprano, saying that he "gets" the appeal and that most Americans like gangsters. Give me a break. I don't like gangsters or "humor" based on cruelty and to me Trump is none of those things. While it may be fun for his supporters to play "Middle finger politics" and party at rallies does that make the cruelty, racism, autocracy, bigotry, anti-science, nihilism, etc-OK? The Romans thought it was fun to watch people and animals fight to the death, should we bring that back too? What happened to ideas, policies, ethics and morals?

The creature is unintentionally funny to me. Trump,Freddy Krueger'son,unintentionally funniest speeches. "We pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists, and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country," he told a New Hampshire crowd. So Trump is going to be rooting out the fascists,and then it goes on to use fascistic language, slogans and analogies. so is it going to be rooting out the embodied fascists within itself is it, it's going to exercise it's own personal demons. So are you Americans voting for Trump in November, are you all voting for Freddy Krueger's son? So come November, will it be Freddy Krueger's son versus cowboy joe, the so-called leader of the free world? is it going to be tweedle dee or tweedle dum, probably partners in crime aren't they? Vote Freddy Krueger's son back in, in November and people can get back to the golden age of insults, not so golden for those on the receiving end, was/is it? As I see it, Trumpism is a professional spectator sport model of politics. You cheer for your home team, even if the home team has bastards on it, or even if the other team might have some redeeming qualities. THAT is the level of engagement with politics that many people have, and dare I say it's probably what motivates most of those who cast votes. It's sad, it's reductionist, it's pathetic ... but it's reality in the US, where pre-college education has been gutted, teachers have been shafted, and the economics of the family has everyone working to pay higher and higher costs of living and higher education. You can't expect most people to take politics seriously if the society doesn't take them seriously enough to see them through to being invested in that society.

Modern right-wing ethnonationalist populism has a lot to do with the rise of social media IMO. It's difficult to think of another reason why politicians like Trump, Modi, Bolsonaro, Duterte and so many others would suddenly get elected in countries across the world. Ethnonationalist demagoguery and conspiracy theorist fearmongering is probably just the lowest common denominator to mobilize people, and where previously elites were able to smooth off the rough edges with their control of party politics and the media, with social media and the internet the floodgates opened.

@momchilyordanov8190
@momchilyordanov8190 Месяц назад
@@kg356 Do you really think it can be stopped with "immigration policies". I'm talking about the "replacement". This is so naive. 1. About 90% of the population of Earth is not White. Think about it. Nine out of every ten people are not White. 2. The population of the world is ever more mobile. Because of everything - advancement in communication, advancement in transportation, desire to get better education in other parts of the world, everything. 3. The young population is mainly in Africa and Asia, the predominantly White nations are old (Europe) or not young (North America). I do not know if many people can even imagine a country like Pakistan, in terms of total population and its age. 244 million people with average age of 20(!) How about Nigeria, with its 225 million people at average age of 17(!!) Somehow that ocean of young, active people will remain locked in place? In 21st century? No, it will not. It will go all over the world - some in Europe, some in America, most will stay home ofc, but these are just 2 of the countries, I can write 5 more examples. Or ten. 4. More and more the companies, employers, institutions are recruiting worldwide (see point 2.) and do not care if the person who fits the requirement is White or American. From their perspective is dumb to care about that. If you want a fun, "mirror" example, look how NBA got 'whiter', when the recruitment went worldwide and the biggest stars are guys like Jokic and Doncic... I can give you at least three more major points, but let's cut to the chase - the really dumb thing is to see all of these things like "a conspiracy against the White people". Somewhere, an evil cabal is plotting how to replace them with Black gays! Nope. It's a natural process and that is the main reason to be "unstoppable". And the idea that somehow, we (I'm as White as they come, btw) are going to build a big fence and live in our own world is nonsense.

The truth is sometimes unsatisfactory 😢 most of those who will vote have made up their mind where they stand on the issue, which leaves people who are apathetic enough that they might not vote. These are the type of people who don't really pay attention to politics. You and I are here at the New York Times podcasts - they are watching March madness, or football, or influencer content about makeup tips or how to invest right or deal with crooked friends. Fox News and other right-wing outlets are more likely to migrate into their stream of recommendations. And they don't care, they are not making a herculean effort to curate things in order to get the best opinion for what's good for the country they just have a feeling about how things are, which they have gotten from what is lying around, and that will guide how they vote if they do vote at all. Jan 6 was an ugly day, but it was just a day, life went on, and most people are not afraid of democracy being in danger. The country looks too deep-state-ish and sclerotic to change that violently in that direction to a lot of them (truly, little do they know). The truth sucks sometimes. Here's hoping the Dems can turn this around, but there's no denying it's where we're at.

What isn't offered is a deeper understanding of how the human mind is hard-wired. If there was more understanding of the psychological make up of people, then how people are attracted to ethnonationalism, racism, and bigotry wouldn't seem so foreign, nor would Trump and other Right Wing appeal be such a mystery. Trump may only appeal to a certain percentage of the electorate, but that electorate represents every type of person in society, from the most educated and wealthy to the less educated and poor. As for Trump not having an organized group of Brown Shirts, if elected again, he aims to deputize the sheriff departments across the nation as well as having the US military at his disposal.

He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth - he was a troubled malevolent kid - who's father admired that type of behavior. That character was supposed to poke fun at an archetype of uneducated bigot - Norman Lear just died a couple months ago - I would have loved to see what his answer would be - to the question - did you think it was possible that Archie Bunker would be elected president? Trying to break history into predictable chunks or “turnings” is just an appeal to numerology or providence. There is a more precise analysis of the moment we are in: late-stage capitalism. The United States is too overstretched abroad, the gulf between the wealthiest classes and the rest of us is wider than ever, and the demands of corporations for profit are ravenous. And when the lowest tier of the ruling elite-whites- begin to see their wealth decline, they start looking for demagogues to rescue them.

Trump put many family business out of business by not paying them. Filed for business bankruptcy 6 times. Has his supporters paying hundreds of thousands for his legal fees. Not a salt of the earth businessman. He's lived in litigation and will die in litigation.

Wow, your show typically doesn’t dive into ad-hominem attacks. Personally, I don’t like Trump, but as you guys were leveling non-stop attacks, I found myself rooting for him just so the arrogance of the “analysis “ would stop. You can (and usually do) do so much better than what you put out today.

Calling someone out (Trump) factually is not an attack, it's just a fact. Besides, don't you ever listen to how Trump speaks? I guess only those with ears to hear.

its hard to describe trump without describing him, he is an evil bigot, he is a modern day George Wallace, minus the pretend religious redemption later in life. you cannot really describe him as anything other than what he is.

We still love even tho he's a billionaire or more or less, he seems one of us. Biden is a politician and made his every dime in politics (ugh). Trump built/has things/ we can golf in /or stay a night at/ or have lunch in. Tangible things. Like our fathers after WW2. Small Business. Trump is big business but the vibe is same as my dad starting a car lot in 1948. Trump speaks our language. Biden does not

Trump has ripped off so many "family businesses" and put them out of business. He has spent his entire life in litigation, and will die in litigation. Filed for business bankruptcy 6 times. Not the model " businessman,".

Trump killed a million Americans in his four years and he did not build his own business. It was handed to him by his father along with 400 million dollars cash. He was and is nothing like your dad but has lied through his capped teeth to make you believe it and you’re dumb enough to believe it all and ready to give him your last dollar. No wonder he’s a winner.

If you're not fact-checking the fact checkers....then you're doing it wrong. You have to show WHY it's wrong or correct. Not just deny it or confirm it with no explanation.

Excellent! I first unserstood the gangster appeal of Trump when I saw Greg Gutfield lay it out plain as day. He actually said we need a gangster to deal with foreign powers, the libs, and so forth.

They are all a gang of psychopaths. politicians don't become criminals,criminals become politicians. Dabrowski believed that the most important aspect of human development is the emotional one, since only in the area of emotional growth, transformation of behavior and character is possible. The great majority of population lives on and rarely grows beyond the level of primary integration. The most primitively integrated character structures are observed in psychopaths and psychopath-like individuals, who suffer from “emotional retardation,” characterized by inability to experience empathy and guilt. Let's all hope and pray, that Trump (Freddy Krueger's son) doesn't have a judge who is impervious to evidence. lol
