Explained: Batteries Explode - Battery Safety 

When he said shorting any battery including AA or car battery would cause them to explode I realised we are not dealing with someone who knows about batteries or electronics. AA / AAA are Ni-MH (rechargeable) or alkaline chemistry (non rechargeable). They will not explode if shorted. Car batteries are lead acid, they also will not explode when shorted. Li-ion are susceptible to a cascade reaction called thermal runaway on shorting. This can cause fast venting. I.e getting very hot and venting flaming gas. If you contain that gas to allow pressure to build you get an explosion. To find real experts on li-ion cells find a flashlight forum like the candlepower forums. Flashlight guys really know their batteries.

Thanks for sharing the video. I've been using Samsung 25R batteries since I started vaping. I always label the batteries with a Sharpie marker, and marry them to a certain mod. I also inspect them for defects when I remove them for charging. I have a Nitecore charger which holds four batteries, and it works really well. The charger has many safety features built in. You are right, taking precautions can prevent a lot of headaches and injuries.

He says, "don't do this and don't do that," but never explains why. It would help if you explained why!

I silcone sleeve is a great idea. I was given a free case by my local shop, but this seems better. I usually try to keep then clear from metal, but this is a good convenient safety measure. Just ordered 8 sleeves in different colours. Now I will know which are charged and which have discharged.

Thanks for the video more people need an education on ohms law and the vaping industry has failed miserably at safe guarding the consumer by selling this stuff without making people aware of the dangers.

Was carrying my batteries on the charger to my truck and they exploded in my hand. Wasn't carrying anything else so nothing had touched them wasn't the best feeling in the world that had just happens 2 days ago so now batteries are a very touchy subject for me. Take this guy serious batteries are nothing to mess around with. NEVER I MEAN NEVER use a battery with any nics in the wrap. Safe vaping guys!

I use a single battery mech mod, i bought 2 18650s from IMR and it came with a warning saying to not use them in any vape product. I was obviously confused since im new to this. I feel much safer now thank you

Great vaping video! A couple of new battery technology updates: 1) ICR (LCO) is the very old technology, which is almost outdated because it is apt to explode. IMR (LMO) is still being used but its IR is a bit higher, which causes lower operating voltage when it is heavily loaded with low resistance atomizer. HIGH-DRAIN NMC is the most advanced technology nowadays, which is much safer (due to more nickel than manganese and cobalt) and performs lowest IR, which delivers highest power when it is heavily loaded with low resistance atomizer. 2) For 18650 cell, the continuous maximum current should not exceed 30 A no matter how C-rate is advertised. This is because the limit mass (42g ~ 50g) of 18650 cell can't sink too much heat and the cell body temperature may go over 75 degC if load current is over 30A. Choosing a proper battery charger: Power supply is not a battery charger for Li-Ion batteries!!! Never use a USB power supply to charge your vaping battery because it will over-charge you battery (i.e. USB 5.0 V power supply is way above 4.20 V!!!) and make your battery to age very soon (i.e. die in a few of weeks). An aged battery also performs higher IR, which waste more electric energy in form of heat and causes your battery body hotter. You do need a CC/CV charger (two charging phases: Constant Current charging, then Constant Voltage charging) in-between the power supply and the vaping battery so that your vaping battery can be well maintained with its lowest IR and longest life. Agree. . However, missing very important safety. 1. Verify you charger is not adding current after 4.2volts. 2. Check voltage off charger. . Over charging number one reason for explosion. . Though shorting is no joke. 3. Name brand 4. Use protected cells, if possible.

Hey, thank you for this video! I just switched to vaping from smoking cigarettes, and I had a pod system for a little over a week before getting a regulated mod. Apparently, the Navy is working on making water-based batteries with a zinc sponge in them. It's apparently much safer and more efficient. I still wonder what the worst case scenarios will be with these new, upcoming batteries, and if they will have them for vaping, since they have banned vaping on-board Navy vessels because of the dangers of misuse. So this will be interesting to see. Thanks again!

How about touching on recycling?

My local Vape Shop gives free battery cases, no purchase required and will rewrap your batteries for free just to keep their customers safe. There are battery cases that hold 4 batteries so I use those to store batteries for my mods which take 3 batteries. In the past I purchased a ton of cases because I use to hand them to people I saw carrying batteries in their pockets. I also label my batteries and rotate there positions between charges so they discharge evenly. I also have certain batteries for certain mods. Mods that require a lot of current or higher ampere draw get different batteries which often have a lower MAH Rating so that I do not stress out my batteries. So I Taylor the batteries for the mods and the builds I am running on the mods again so I do not stress out my batteries. As a rule of thumb I try to stay below 80% of the nominal ampere rating so if I am using a 20a battery I will try to stay at or below 16 amps and if its a 30 am battery then 24 amps. I never never use the Pulse Rating of a battery because you would need to know the time of the pulse and often thats not available from the OEM. So I prefer to be somewhat conservative in my use of batteries but its my personal preference to keep myself safe at all times. Last thing worth mentioning is only buy your batteries from a reputable source because there are too many fake or mislabeled batteries floating around. I do not buy batteries based on price from unknown sources and so if a good source is more expensive you have to keep in mind that the added cost is way less then the cost of a hospital bill not to mention the pain and suffering costs. I don't profess to know everything but I have over 30 yrs of experience around industrial electronics and so I simply apply what I do at work to my vaping experience to keep myself safe at all time.

Ironically while watching this i thought id have a look at the batteries in my smok alien 220 mod, i had the mod on charge and took the batteries out without taking it off charge, i kept the mod on the usb and then put the batteries back in, the device instantly starting putting out smoke, i instantly opened the bottom and let the batteries fall out, batteries were super hot and there was a melted plastic smell.. im scared to use the mod now even with different batteries.. any advice??

wow after watching this I'm going to have to get a new pair I used my 2 batteries for my dual mod then got a rx75w single battery mod and used one of those batteries in there when it ran out id chuck it on my nitecore then use the other one when that ran out of switch and chuck that on the nitecore.. well now I've gone back to my smok h priv and put both them 18650s back together again🙈🙈....I didn't know that at all I thought marrying or pairing just meant u couldn't use two different kinds of batteries in one dual mod.. thanks for this video it may have saved my face being blown up.

I have a kangertech kbox200 which is a dual battery mod. you say not to charge the batteries with them in the mod but you don't explain why. if this was an issue why would the manufacturer include a usb charging port. to me its like saying every time you need to charge your cellphone you need to take it out. it just doesn't make sense to me.

About marrying your batteries together. I have a spare pair of batteries i use for my single batt mod and dual batt mod. What i do is i make sure that they are charged together when they both run out from using my single batt mod. Is it still safe to use it on my dual batt mod even if their cycles are the same?

Hey I have a question regarding a specific battery and whether it would be safe with a specific mod/tank combo. First of all, some information; The mod: Wismec Reuleaux RX200 The tank: Smok TFV8 Cloud Beast (the lowest ohm coils I believe are .15 ohms or .18 ohms) I'll be vaping at around 125 watts at most. So, whilst looking for safe but cheap batteries for this device I stumbled across the LG HD2C 18650 2100mAh flat top battery that's listed at either 25A or 20A, depending on what site you go to.
