I thought you were going to talk about the absolute incredible slapstick of metabilis 3 that may be the thing in all of Dr. who I gave laughed the most at
I would have talked about The Green Death for an hour tbh. There's so much to unpack but I had to focus on the important bits. Instead I decided to bring up the moment that made me laugh the most in Doctor Who which was Jo's being rescued by the bowl. I literally had to rewind to confirm I heard it right and then pause for 5 minutes to recover.
jo's departure was one of the best instances of classic dw doing some sort of 'real world' commentary... was painful to watch even as a kid (yeah cliff, you looked like a dick even to a preschooler at the time), hit me hard when I did this same 'gotta watch 'em all in a year' exercise about 10 years ago, and good to see you highlight it here. 'oh old doctor who is just terrible costumes and silly trite plots'... yeah somewhat but also at times it can delve into commentary on gaslighting in interpersonal relationships, and also at times the pompous inefficiency of the british military officer class world, ecological damage, the thrilling power of 'the youth' and their idealism, the dangers of techno-idealism... and the attitudes of 'higher-ups' at the beeb. everyone has a 'my doctor' and pertwee was mine. this is what I fell in love with. as for jo... I have far too many friends who found themselves in that relationship. they escaped. scarred, yes, but they escaped. I like to think jo did too, and became the true eco-activist-scientist cliff was cosplaying.
I know you are getting tiny view counts on this series. you could fit your total viewership on a minibus. please don't be put off, keep going. it's not explaining 'badly' at all... your takes are very much on point, often funny, and doing this season by season across so many seasons is giving a really good 'grand sweep' perspective that is often lost. there was a lot going on esp. in these early seasons, lots of innovations and ideas. loved it then, love it now. thanks.
I'd like to think that too but the show seems to frame it like it's a good relationship for her. It seems like they wanted to set Clifford up as a "Doctor-like" character because Jo loves the Doctor so who else would she leave him for? But this misses the fact that even though the Third Doctor is rude to everyone including Jo sometimes, he's also genuinely shown to care about her and apologises to her when he oversteps the mark. Clifford never apologises. Also the relationship between Jo and her employer is different to the relationship between her and her romantic partner. They shouldn't be the same and she should demand more from her partner.
If I was doing this for the view count I'd have given up long ago 😄 I'm doing this because it's fun! But I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. Can't wait for you to see the next one!
@@wtfmcgurk6315 there was a LOT of that 'putting the uppity 'girl' in her place' in media at the time and it reflected relaity a lot too - 'cool male hippie radicals' treating women as their hangers-on, the bit of tottie you deserved for being so cool and hippie and radical. its hards to tell tbh whether this was just anothewr instance or a commentary on it. the doctor giving jo that crystal... that makes no sense unless he as a character and thus the writer also was out to make a point. its something I've spent a bit too much time thinking about on and off. XD
