It was funny being online and see the changes of opinion happening about Aegislash People HATED it because it's an object possessed, after some time people LOVED it because: 1. Sword 2. Ghost 3. Competitive Monster 4. Edgy 5. Potentially cool nicknames 6. Shiny colors Humans are such mysterious and confusing creatures
@@Gloomdrakeyeah, especially to Chandelure. Everyone really hated them just because it looks like an object rather than creature. But after a while, it’s some of everyone’s favorite because it’s a ghost, fire, has a cool noise, very competitive, and it has a cool shiny. Humans truly are mysterious.
I honestly don't get it. I actually like the ones that are objects. After all, there's nothing wrong with a variety of all kinds. Even if it's just objects. Also, the idea of cursed objects isn't as crazy as you think. I know a lot of different ones that I could see becoming new Pokemon at some point.
I guess the issue is more about the "twists" or the type of object they start from that cause issue for some people. Like yeah, Aegislash and its line are fine. But then you got the Vanilluxe line and Klefki who are a bit "off" (in my personal opinion again).
@@Juju2927 ”How do we make an icecream Pokémon” “Well, what if it was an icicle that puts snow on its head in the shape of icecream, but when the snow melts it drips to the bottom of the cone and refreezes like icicles normally do and thus, gives itself eternal life!” “How do we exemplify the trickster nature of fairies?” “Let’s make a fairy that steals a valuable item, like important keys, and make it a little fairy shaped like a key ring so it can carry a lot of keys!” I’m paraphrasing but I find these significantly more interesting than “It’s a haunted sword seeking vengeance and bloodshed”
Yeah animated objects are such a ubiquitous concept in fantasy, I don't get why people don't like them. I literally used a bunch of magically animated swords in my DnD campaign today
The Vanillite line aren't even real ice cream. They're just icicles covered in snow. Though I imagine the ice cream shapes and the simple cutesy faces are meant to invoke the image of old-fashioned restaurant mascots - y'know, classic kitschy Americano. And hey, maybe Ghost is one of my favorite types because they can reasonably be just about anything - dolls, yokai, balloons, coffins, candles, jack-o-lanterns, piles of sand, costumers, tea sets, stealth bombers, Izanami dragon, etc.
Honesty, I never really understood the object mon hate myself. They're really not so bad. Especially since Chandelure is pretty universallly loved from what I see
Honest opinion, I think trubish and garboder are waaay too overheated, the only thing I dislike on garboder is just that his arms are on different levels, other than that, I genuinely looks good, and I think is a way better grimer/muk replacement in the sence that garboder and trubish actually look significantly different and not just like the first stage got fatter. Vanilite is OK, but I think they could have shown better that it's an icicle covered in snow, maybe not have the face on the snow that is covering its body, and a bit of a different face, silly pokemon are fine, but it needs a contrast in personality, looks, concept or something, Vanilite is silly all around, there is no contrast in it that can offset the silly in my opinion, if it had a more mischievous face or it kidnaped children like driftloon, I think it would have been less hated
Chandelure is my fav mon, and magnemite is the cutest thing ever. Also, dont get what ppl even dislike about object mons, maybe just most of them arent good designs or sth
I mean, online I've seen almost nothing but love for it, but I have actually seen gen wunners heckle chandelure cosplayers and several other newer 'mon cosplayers (Literally In Real Life) before. So. Sleep well tonight knowing people like that exist.
Might be a cultural thing too, since in Japan there are yokai that are living objects, and when other folks don't know that, they deride them for being 'boring'.
I remember when Honedge was first revealed a lot of people began to draw all sorts of people holding it in various poses, ready to fight with their sword pokemon. And then the dex entry for Honedge about it absorbing the soul of who ever holds it's hilt was revealed and everyone did a collective "eggghhhh. Oops."
@@SuperDanMan11100And then they might say "b-but my object yokai!" like that 1) isn't one of the inspirations for all the subsequent object Pokémon and 2) excuses what, by their own self-proclaimed metric, is bad design.
I could've sworn one of the artists in charge of designing the megas straight up said in an interview he wanted to make one but couldn't think of a good design
I think otherwise. Personally I think Megas undermine the core concept of Pokémon evolution, where each stage is a separate character and not simply an animal growing older. Jigglypuff has notable design differences from Wigglytuff, and while you can understand they’re connected, Wigglytuff isn’t literally just Jigglypuff but more mature looking, it has the bunny ears and feet and that adds a new layer. Same reason why a lot of mid stage starters have random additions that then disappear, Charmeleon’s red skin, Croconaw’s caveman aesthetic, Raboot’s pocket. Megas a lot of the time just kinda added stuff on to a Pokémon. No real change, cause obviously it’s a form change not a proper evolution. The downside of this though is when you try to make a Mega for a Pokémon in a complete line with a finished concept and are unable to expand on it. Sure you could make “cooler Flygon” but you might also not do the design enough Justice or cater enough to fan demand. That’s what happened with Charizard and Mewtwo, then 1-3 months later they revealed “Heyyy, here’s the Mega X forms that just so happen to be everything the fans have been demanding in their outrage.” My point is Flygon is a wonderful Pokémon with a completed concept, just like Tyranitar, Metagross, and Garchomp. Adding a mega isn’t adding a new layer to the cake, it’s just injecting more cake into the layer that already exists. I’ve heard some argue “well they could make it a Bug type!” but I feel like for a Mega Flygon that would just be a direct downgrade as it loses STAB on ground moves, can’t learn many amazing bug moves, and trades it’s okay weakness spread for a whole bunch of new ones.
I just noticed that when Aegislash is in Shield Forme, the dots on its shield turn white like eyes like the pre-evolutions, which makes the pattern around the circles look like teeth, so the shield is actually three faces that share three eyes, and I cannot unsee it now.
I actually never minded the object Pokemon. Maybe it came from watching Dora the Explorer as a toddler. While I never used it, I think the Aegislash line is cool. EDIT: I know about Legends ZA -Also if you ask me, the biggest mistake Pokemon did was the lack of a Pokemon Z-
Many of my favorits count into that group, chandalure, klefkey, as long as the concept and design are great...... The irony, of gen one and two being worst when it came to objects and lazy designers but gen oners complaining that new pokemon where "just somethingsomething"
The Aegislash line is genuinely one of my favorite evolution lines in the series. I started with X, and seeing Honedge for the first time was just incredible. Gen 6 really is underrated, and I’m happy to see it get even a little recognition
While the Gilgamesh from the Epic of Gilgamesh might not be known for using weapons, Gilgamesh in the Final Fantasy series is all about that. He goes around collecting the swords of every Final Fantasy protagonist, so in that way, they might also be referencing Final Fantasy's Gilgamesh.
@@MegaPokefan97and was the first monster.... I love how things that are spoken about as new concepts are found way back in mesopotamian writings, from non binary people and how they are under the protection of istar against discrimination to the sympathetic monster vs monterous hero...... Gilgamesh slayed a monster just minding it's own business protecting its forest and when enkidu stumbled upon him and the devastation he layed upon the guarded ground he questioned just what he thought to have done there, not at all happy with his best bro in the slightest
And maybe even the Fate series' Gilgamesh because he's seen carrying a sword called Ea which could only be wielded by Gilgamesh himself who is also seen wearing golden armor. He also has a Noble Phantasm called Gate of Babylon that opens up a large portal from behind him that sends out many different weapons.
I remember some old fan art that interpreted the Honedge line as insects that gripped and infused themselves into swords. It was a really cool interpretation of a Pokémon, especially how unique it was
We forget Muk and Weezing is just different forms of pollution Specifically Water and Air Pollution. Garbodor is just land pollution in general. Alolan Muk is the result of humans trying to solve polluted rivers. This Muk can eat solid waste. Galarian Weezing might look like industrial smoke stacks from factories, but are actually nuclear power plants spewing regular steam. Meanwhile Gigantabodor just turns into a mountain of today's excessive consumerism causing more pollution. you can see discarded pokedolls, toy planes and boats, Magikarp's skeleton, a whole building, an abandoned train, an even a *MASTER BALL* stuck to its body.
@@CrownofMischiefthat's definitely an paradox theory restriction, tho. . if the ruff ol paradox mons were their original look thats just an coincidence
How do you feel about the comparisons to Stormbringer, the cursed blade? The soul-sucking eye-in-the-sword thing and Aegislash's shiny looks so much like an homage.
Honestly Im not even sure why even that hatred for object mon is a thing to begin with. Like you said they were around sense gen 1, Gamefreak just became better at designing them. And the fact that people see it like its a sign that they run out of ideas is honestly baffling. Also Aegislash is objectively one of the best object mon they have ever made.
Orange dragon with fire on tail : genius, so inspired ! Ghost sword inspired by a demon king, Greek mythology and tales of King Arthur : boo, soo uninspired, they're running out of ideas !
As a former genwunnder myself, I found it hilarious. lol Gen 1 will always be my favorite, nostalgia is powerful like that. But I did eventually come around to appreciate the rest as well, the newer Pokemon are just as cool if not cooler in many ways. In fact my favorite mythic is not even gen 1 at all, it's Hoopa. Genwunners are silly. lol
@@addison_v_ertisement1678 Genwunners are much rarer and tamer than they used to be. During gen 5-6, you REALLY couldn't mention Pokémon without someone weeping about ice cream and keychain Pokémon and the series being on the downfall ever since gen 2.
im a genwunner, but not the usual negative one. I really appreciate all gens, I just put gen 1 in higher regards plus I love all objectmons. next are the humanoids. then plants. i like animal-based monsters the least
When i first saw Aegislash my first thought was it looked a enemy or mini boss i would find in legend of zelda game. It looked like a boss fight thats protecting great treasure like the eye of truth and reminds me of the weapons of a dark nut
Finally an Aegislash video, my favourite pokémon Edit: I assume people think Gillgard comes from Gilgamesh, and associates him with sword, is because of his apearance in the Fate franchise. In it his Noble Phantasm, Gate of Babylon, let's him summon a bunch of weapons, mainly swords but also other weapons like spears and such.
On your point about Oda Nobunaga, well, as much as he's romanticized as a villain due to even calling himself the "demon king," what people don't get is that what he did, unlike the likes of Adolf Hitler or other cruel leaders, wasn't anything that other daimyou of the time period wouldn't do, as samurai actually tended to be very cruel, themselves; much as Night Slash's inspiration of a samurai assassinating an innocent person at night to test their new blade. Plus, him calling himself the "demon king" was actually purely in sarcasm and satire in response to Takeda Shingen in a letter calling himself the "head priest of the Tendai sect monks," when in reality, Shingen wasn't even a believer in the Tendai sect, let alone their "head priest." Thus, Nobunaga was basically flipping Shingen the bird and saying, "Pfft, 'head priest,' my foot. If you're the head priest of a sect that you don't even frickin' follow in the first place, then I'm the demon king of the Sixth Heaven."
Especially since Nobunaga didn't wield a cursed blade. As noted in the video, he used a Masamune (Kotegiri), not a Muramasa. (Side note: Muramasa was never a pupil of Masamune, as that was literally impossible due to when they lived. The legend of Juuchi Yosamu/Muranasa vs. Yawarakai-Tei/Masamune is more a parable at best.)
Okay, this "Genwunner" complaint thing is more common than any genwunner complaint... Any real "Genwunner" complaint stopped like over 10 years ago... and even then, it started when a group of old fans saw some of the weirder Gen 5 Pokemon and had complaints that would have died down if people just ignored them... Basically, this "defeated nostalgia thing" is nostalgia itself and is basically a complaint towards arguments of the past that few hold... and it's call to attention is more common than it's very existance...
@@TheDeathmail im just saying that some pokèmon fans like a design because its nostalgic no matter how terrible it well be im not complaining about genwunners (sorry btw)
@@TheDeathmailI think it’s more so about pointing out the contradictions in the new Pokémon bad complaint as while it’s fine to have gen 1 mons as your favorite. Casting Judgement on new mons for things the old generations did and ignoring that is weird to me. But what a fandom without its contradictions.
I have literally never had any problem with the concept behind a pokemon before and I think that's where a lot of 'mon criticism falls flat - There are no bad concepts (generally speaking), just bad execution. There are several pokemon I don't actually like the design of, but that comes from a place of character design and not whatever the pokemon was actually based on. (Also I literally love learning about random historical/cultural/scientific things through the lens of pokemon lol. It's exactly why I subscribed to your channel. It's like a massive autism win.)
Supprised you never mentioned the amazing shinies this line has. The red blades of Honedge and Doublade, and the red edge of Aegislash. The silver regular and red shiny remind me of the Masamune and Muramasa blades you mentioned before.
Very nice video about one of my favorite gen 6 pokemon! Kinda wish you'd brought up Joyeuse as another example of a famous French sword of legend, but I can understand why you wouldn't. I've never heard of an Aegislash that changes color 30 times a day.
They could have made a Paldean Honedge based on Spanish sabers, evolving into ascalon (Saint Giorgios' sword) mixed with the Dragon Slayer from Berserk
14:49 I didn't know dwarves were depicted as what we would describe in modern times as "gnomes" Actually explains a lot about the dwarves in Final Fantasy.
25:09 Suddenly the name of the UNSC Infinity's shipboard A.I Roland makes sense to me. Durandel from Marathon (Pre Halo) and Cortana (Cortain) are both legendary swords in name.
Honestly I don’t get why people hate on humanoid Pokémon, especially the starters. It’s like unfair that Pokémon like Blaziken who’s despite looking like a dude in a suit gets praised and love for looking cool yet Pokémon like Cinderace get the “it’s looks like furry bait” insult. Like seriously they’re both bipedal from start to finish so I don’t understand the hate.
@@kaitogirldraws But at least the Scorbunny line makes more sense for why it’s a humanoid. Like little rabbit that loves playing soccer evolving into a sports mascot makes way more sense compared to a baby chick evolving into a man bird because it knows kung fu.
25:05 Durendal gives the german name of Aegislash its name. It's called Durengard. So the sword/attack part of the name is from Durendal and the shield/protect part is "gard" which is similar or the same to the english guard.
The hate for object Pokémon really is so overblown and basically ignoring the Pokémon we had since gen 1. Also, I didn’t think about how a curse and or living sword is a pretty common trope.
Honestly I looove the Aegislash line and I hope it gets regional and/or "paradox" variants in the future. Like, an Honedge that actually looks like a katana, or a "future" Honedge that's basically a lightsaber. Or maybe a "hammer" version to pay tribute to Mjolnir, to be wielded by a variant of Tinkaton.
Fun fact: “Excalibur” is the French-ified version of “Caliburn”, which was what the sword was originally called. I guess Arthurean legend got famous in France at some point in history.
Pokemon's biggest mistake: *Not bring mega evolution back* *Trust.* Overall amazing video describing this topic amongst Pokémon because it's pretty common and I hate it for sure.
To be honest, all I want from Mega Evolution is a "generic Mega Stone" of sorts. Doesn't change the Pokemon's form, maybe 20 points for each stat or 30 in the two highest stats and 20 in the next two highest, but still allows Pokemon teams without one of the 20 popular Pokemon to utilize the mechanic. This isn't saying this will replace the Mega Evolution, just giving mons without the special rocks to still "mega-evolve"
This is my favorite line of Pokémon, particularly because it's just a sword lol Jokes aside, I genuinely love Aegislash's design. Not only is it BOTH of my favorite types, it has an awesome shiny too! Its gimmick is also just so cool! My own love of Swords and the like probably also makes me a little biased. Plus, the image of a King or Knight wielding a Pokémon into battle is pretty sick, especially with fitting Armor and scarves. Aegislash is so cool, literally my only issue is that I think all Protect attacks should switch its Stance, instead of just King's Shield. Edit: Today I learned, the Vikings accidentally invented Steel O.O
Quick reminder to Genwunners: you had sentient eggs/seeds, a floating rock with arms, a literal rat, a palm tree, the nightmare beyond my imagina- I mean Mr. Mime, and Barney the Yellow Dragon.
I could see AZ being a Gilgamesh reference. Ancient king the size of a giant who sought out eternal life and in a sense failed. Now thats sth to dig deep on.
Aegislash is very interesting as an idea of a pokemon, so in my personal opininion, if the Gamefreak give to Aegislash a mega, it will share similarities with a Sword and Sheild forms⚔🛡
This whole video is even funnier when you realize the things old Lockstin twins are saying were most likely actual comments Lockstin and his team sourced from the internet
Ooooh nice sword! *Shlink* Wonder why it was just, here, weird.... Oh theres text here "Beware of choking", wonder what that means. Also European swords hell yea \[T]/
I would love regional forms made from different weapons. Spear→spears→halberd Throwing hammer→warhammer→ Mjölner Or even buckler→kite shield →tower shield
Pokemon biggest mistake is making 3 fire/fighting starters. Blaziken is and always has been best boi, the OG, the first born prodigal child. The love for monke and pig feeds its power
It's possible that Aegislashs Japanese name is more of a reference to Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy, who's whole thing is that he shows up in a bunch of the games looking for legendary weapons.
I find this entire notion of pokemon fans exclaiming "back in my day we didn't have ice cream pokemon" types to just be harmless banter, talk longer to them and you get better convos out of it
I would enjoy a regional variant for it to resemble swords from other countries. Maybe it could actually be a katana or one of the swords from India or Egypt.
Or, Kamen Rider Saber, the name Durandal reminds me of that tokusatsu series, because one of the Shindai siblings in the show, both of whom are Riders, literally has his Kamen Rider form literally be named Durandal, also known by his title of The Time Swordsman.
The fact there were no Hisuian or Paldean regional variants or convergent evolutions of this line is disappointing. I mean granted, I have no idea what form the shield would take for a Hisuian Aegislash as Samurai weren't really known for using shields but for Paldean it's easy because the Spanish used bucklers so the shield wouldn't be that different aside from being smaller relative to the sword (bucklers were _tiny_ compared to other shields) and with different adornments and maybe one of those weird semi-spherical bulge things in the middle of the outside that bucklers usually had.
The connection to Gilgamesh could have more merit. Gilgamesh was a king and warrior with no need for a sword, while aegislash is a kingly sword with no need for a warrior, since it can float around and fight on its own. It’s not the only time a Pokémon is an inversion of its origin, like fomantis. Or maybe I’m overthinking
The oldest known version of king arthur’s story has two swords, Excalibur being the sword from the lake and the sword in the stone being Clarent which shattered in battle and was reforged into the Coward’s Sword and was used to mortally wound King Arthur by Mordred
Only issue I ever had with this line was when I wanted to grind experience against the Elite Four in Gen 6 and Aegislash would be there holding me up with its King's Shield.
I think my favorite part of this pokemon is how it's most viable physical steel move is iron head. It doesn't make sense for a split second and then BAM
Hey, lockstin and gnoggin! Could you do a video explaining pokemon Nature's? I'd like to know if there is some hidden meaning behind why nature's give the stats that they do! 🤷🏾♂️
That one part about Gilgamesh could possibly connect BECAUSE of his arrogance, like "Oh look at how powerful I am, I don't need a weapon because I AM the perfect weapon." and that'd obviously fit with the honedge line because, well they are literal weapons themselves, like the most recognizable weapon period.
I feel like people think of pokemon too much as if they are supposed to be a 1-1 mimic for animals in the natural world and not a kind of fusion between animals, nature spirits, and Yokai which fits in much more cleanly to the role pokemon play in their world. Pokemon will manifest based on the commonalities of the pokemon world, pollution caused the creation of the Muk and Weezing, the advent of industrialization and electricity created pokemon like Magnemite and Electrode, and so on. Just like the famous Tsukumogami takes the form of old and cherished objects, pokemon will take the form of well-known every day objects from time to time.
I think my biggest criticism in design is those pokemon who are a bit too "on the nose", rather than abstracting more. Take Sokk and Throw for example- they have very obvious Gis. Comparing their designs to Haryama you can see they were obviously more abstractly inspired rather than just making him fully sumo. It's entirely arbitrary, of course, but that is a more substantial criticism to lay on Pokemon as a whole. Another good comparison is Vanillux vs Sinestea. I feel like Vanilux's whole line doesn't do it for me, but Sinestea does. I agree with your initial criticism- it's all personal preference, in the end.
Hey @Gnoggin that Scottish sword your showed while a common parlance Claymore, it's actually a Scottish Long or Great Sword, Claymores are actually Scottish basket hilted broadswords
