First, there was Pidgey. Then later there was another pigeon Pokemon... but maybe they are based on different species? Maybe all the regional birds are based on different species! ...no okay yeah they all are. But what are those species? and what other birds get thrown into the mix? From hawks, owls, and eagles, to toucans, pheasants, and whatever a petrel is. This video will explain a LOT of the lore and origins behind each of the Regional Bird Pokemon.

I count the Wingull line as a regional bird in my headcanon. I just like the concept that Hoenn is a region of doubles: introduction of double battles, two evil teams, two pseudo-legendaries, two Pikachu clones, and lots of "paired" Pokémon (Lunatone/Solrock, Zangoose/Seviper). Thus, two regional birds as well. :D

The notion that Noctowl drops the "time" theme entirely isn't really true. Noctowl's head adornments are like a horned owl, but they also look exactly like the tops of old grandfather clocks, with 2 pediments and especially the finial (the prong in the middle) giving this away. These are SUPER common decorations on really old grandfather clocks. For that matter I'm pretty sure Noctowl is supposed to look like a literal grandfather---it's old and wise, he's supposed to have "Father Time" vibes. And I think the reason Noctowl turns its head upside-down rather than backwards is because this mimics the direction clock hands turn in. I wanna say the triangular feathers on the belly also resemble something clock-related, but I no longer remember what the resemblance was. :/

1:21:04 “How did they decide they were different species??” Up and coming bio student here with a fun fact! While I don’t know the specifics for these birds, what I’ve been taught is that, in the biology world, species are defined by whether or not they can reproduce with each other and create fertile offspring. This is why horses and donkeys can breed to make mules, but because mules are infertile, horses and donkeys are considered separate species, and mules are considered hybrids. Edit: Please read the replies, they’re much more informative than I am, cackles.
@user-xp9tk5ns6b
@user-xp9tk5ns6b 5 месяцев назад
Advanced biology student here: There are acually 3 theories of species. What you explained is the reproductive aproach. Historically there was also the morphologic approach seperating species according to their morphologic structures. There is also the genetical approach seperating species according to their genetical similarities. In total there is not a right approach since species are a human construct simplyfing nature. Even noteworthy biologists and evolution thoerists say its impossible to define the term "species" even though every biologist roughly knows about what a species is.
@SpiderRiderKya
@SpiderRiderKya 5 месяцев назад
The thing is, it's only MALE mules that are infertile, the females CAN produce offspring. The problem is breeding them cause they're suuuper picky about mates, and both horse and donkey stallions can also be picky so the animals might just, not wanna do it will need human intervention. But like, female mules have been documented having foals. This is 'one sex is sterile and the other is fertile' thing happening in hybrids is called Haldane's Law: -"When in the F1 offspring of two different animal races one sex is absent, rare, or sterile, that sex is the heterozygous sex" The reason is cause like, chromosomes. Horses and donkeys have a different number of chromosomes (64 for horses and 62 for donkeys) while mules has 63. Which is what results in the infertility in (male) mules. The greater the difference in chromosomes, the less likely hybridization will occur. Wolves, dogs and coyotes on the other hand, all have the same number of chromosomes (78). meaning they can hybridize easy peasy. Cause, by that logic (creating fertile offspring = same species), domestic dogs, coyotes and wolves are the same species since they can produce fertile offspring. Except no they ARE different species and wolfdogs/coywolves/coydogs/coywolfdogs are hybrids. They create fertile offspring b/c of how closely related they are. A hybrid is just, the offspring of two different species, regardless on if the offspring they create is fertile or not. Dog and wolf, horse and donkey, lion and tiger, house cat and serval, various duck hybrids and goose hybrids, green sea turtle and hawksbill turtle, lake trout and speckled trout.

@@SpiderRiderKya just curious, what did the female mule breed with if the male mules cant produce ? can they breed with horses and donkeys ?
@SpiderRiderKya
@SpiderRiderKya 5 месяцев назад
@@bored588 They were bred with horse and donkey stallions/jacks. I'm not gonna copy it all but, the wikipedia page about mules has a section on their fertility and it lists several documented instances of mule mares producing offspring with both donkeys and horses. But here's a couple. "A 1939 article in the Journal of Heredity describes two offspring of a fertile mare mule named "Old Bec", which was owned at the time by Texas A&M University in the late 1920s. One of the foals was a female, sired by a jack. Unlike her mother, she was sterile. The other, sired by a five-gaited Saddlebred stallion, exhibited no characteristics of any donkey." "...a group from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 1995 described a female mule that was pregnant for a seventh time, having previously produced two donkey sires, two foals with the typical 63 chromosomes of mules, and several horse stallions that had produced four foals."

I’d argue with new changing definitions of what a regional bird is that Wingull and Pelipper are in fact the regional birds of Hoenn. They’re avaible before Tailow is and the only reason they weren’t counted as one in the past was due to the water/flying typing as opposed to normal/flying. However the Talonflame, Corviknight and Kilowattrel lines have proven that is no longer the case and therefore Wingull and Pelipper are the regional birds of Hoenn.

I think both are regional birds: they both had BSTs of 430 on release; both evolve via level up in the low 20s; gen 3 already has 2 pseudos so having 2 regional birds isn't out of the question; they represent the land vs water theme. Also, gen 3 was a generation of pairs in general: the introduction of double battles, 2 pseudos legendaries, close Pokemon pairs like Lunatone/ solrock, seviper/zangoose, plusle and minun (also the only gen to have 2 pika-clones, unless you count mimikyu), Volbeat and illumise.

I think a decent definition of regional bird would be: The first multi-stage evolutionary line (not counting starters) of bird pokemon in the regional pokedex. Bird pokemon is just defined as a pokemon that visually resembles a bird, usually flying type but not by requirement. Pidgey is before Spearow Hoothoot is before Natu Taillow is before Wingull Starly is the only Sinnoh bird pokemon with more than one stage (Honchkrow is an added stage of a prior pokemon, and even then Starly is before Honchkrow in the pokedex) Pidove is before Rufflet Fletchling is before Spritzee Pikipek is the only Alolan bird pokemon with more than one stage Rookidee is the only Galarian bird pokemon with more than one stage Wattrel is after Squawkabilly, but Squawkabillly only has one stage. Wattrel is before Flittle. This definition accounts for all the bird pokemon in this video, and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to hold true

I had these two cool ideas for how they could implement the regional bird trope in future games. * Do a switcharound and have the regional bird act more like the regional mammal (Ratatta and Patrat for example) like a Turkey pokemon. Meanwhile we get a three stage flying mammal line, like a new three stage bat line or a flying squirrel line. * Give regular Farfetch’d an evolution and pre-evolution to act as a regional bird of sorts. The latter idea is part of a greater idea I had for a Pokemon game where similar to Black and White. Old Pokemon are unavailable until post game except there are old Pokemon available due to them getting an evolution, pre-evolution, regional form, etc.

I make a Fakemon 'early' starter set long similar lines. The bug, the rodent, and the bird were all two stage Pokémon, but the second stage was sort of 'bad' (like Patrat and Watchhog bad). However, they all had baby forms that had a unique signature move. If the middle stage evolved with the signature move, it would go into a better branch evolution.

I really like how this video isn’t just a compilation with no extra edits to make it less jarring. Most videos of this sort (that I’ve seen anyway) are just the original videos slapped together with the intros/outros cut out as needed. But I appreciate the extra effort you put in to make the transitions feel like part of the video instead of just a cut. I’ve already seen most of the original videos on the regional birds, I put this on as background noise to draw to, but I did notice (and, again, very much appreciate) how you added interest to this video to make it more than a simple compilation. It adds more than one would think, just having a little segway between each segment to break it up and tie it all together. :)

Also, given all the godly stuff described in the Pidgey line segment, it’s quite fitting the line has become famous for Twitch’s “Jesus Bird” lmfao.

I love how everyone doesn't accept Wingull and Pelipper as regional birds, literally can be caught 1 route before Taillow in its debut gen, and appearing in other regions like Taillow years later. Wingull and Pelipper are regional birds of Hoenn alongside the Taillow line.
@shyguyrocks1
@shyguyrocks1 5 месяцев назад
It should be counted. Not only did Hoenn have an unsaid theme of duality or doubles as another comment pointed out, but it's also heavily water-based and Pelipper just fits the region so much better. If I wanted to represent Hoenn as a region with a bird Pokemon it would be Pelipper.

Regional birds are such a staple of the franchise I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who played Pokemon who didn't know at least a few of them, used them on their teams or are even their favorite Pokemon of all. They are such iconic inclusions to the world that, despite being just...you know, birds, still manage to hold a special place within the Pokemon universe and fanbase. I myself find it incredibly difficult to not include at least one bird in a playthrough of any Pokemon game, I like them that much.

Can't argue that Pigeons are smart, Where I work we had a few of them living under a couple of our warehouse dock plates. When we tried to block off access to keep them from making their nests in there, they figured out that if they just waited for us to raise them to load and unload trucks, they could just get back in and out in that time window.

In Fearow & Pelipper’s cases I feel like you just have to accept that a region can have more than one of a “staple” Pokémon category (ex: Hoenn has Salamence and Metagross as pseudo-legendaries and neither of those are contested) or that people didn’t like counting them bc compared to their alternatives, they just think they’re ugly

I usually call Staraptor "The Bird That Can Fight Anything". Mostly because of Close Combat, and Brave Bird letting it take on the very things that once decimated it and it's flock. Ice, Steel, and Rock. Types very common in it's home. It really is the bird which through it's journey has become strong enough to protect the thing most important to it.

@@shyguyrocks1 I like the idea of wingull being the regional bird, but I saw in another comment something that offers way more evidence that swellow would be the "official" regional bird if that was an official term used by the Pokemon Company. In their 1000th pokemon video, they grouped together all the birds that would be considered "regional birds" save for gen 9 because they wanted to showcase them at the end. In that grouping, they did include swellow as gen 3's representative

1. I am surprised that he didn't mention the easy connection of the Talonflame line. Fletchling and Fletchinder also come from Kindling, the baby fuel needed to start a fire from scratch, and Tinder, the necessary spark needed to keep the fire going. Combine those two and you have a flame! 2. Another detail about the Kilowattrel line is that its theming of piracy even goes into it mechanically. It's Electric/Flying, and is therefore supereffective against every other regional bird, and can bully them into giving them whatever they want.

i watched the Pokemon 1008 encounters and all of these regional birds are in the same frame/group. it's like the pokemon company acknowledging this fan term but they were not specific about on what we should call them. in the start of the video they show the starters then the early route regional mammals, then they show all the regional birds, and all the birds that were shown in 1 frame, is pidgey, hoothoot, taillow, starly, pidove, fletchling and rookie. (wattrell is not there because they showed it in the list of new pokemon when they introduce all the pokemon in paldea. and also wingull/natu/spearow are not in that frame/group.) and also yes their total base stats total are close to each other, it's just like how we call a line of pokemon with 600 total base stats as "pseudo legendary".
@aidenjai6714
@aidenjai6714 4 месяца назад
It's pretty much confirmation on the swellow vs. wingull competion for regional bird. The pokemon company gave an answer, even if they didn't slap the words "regional bird" on there, they pretty much solidified most ideas on what a regional bird is 1. Evolves 2. Non starter 3. Bird 4. First dex wise
@MochiJelly4877
@MochiJelly4877 5 месяцев назад
My definition is 1: A Pokémon that contains at least 1 evolution. 2: Must be flying type for at least one of its forms and still be a bird (such as if we got a Pokémon that was say Water/Flying then in second stage became Water/Grass or electric) 3: Must be the first line of new Pokemon for its introduction region that meets this criteria in its regional dex. (I.E. Wingul can be found first but tallow is still listed first in the honenn regional dex)
@shyguyrocks1
@shyguyrocks1 5 месяцев назад
This definition is probably going to change later though. I just say why not count Wingull in there. Why can't there be two in a region? Hoenn did this with both the pika clones and the pseudos for instance why wouldn't it do so with the birds?

The definition I've seen a lot of commentators use (but apparently none of the poll replies which Lockstin read) is that the regional bird is the first flying-type bird pokémon in the gen's pokédex that can evolve (and isn't also a starter, so rowlett doesn't count because it is a starter). This definition disqualifies wingull due to its being listed after taillow in the pokédex, despite its appearing in the wild earlier (along with Ash's never catching one before he stopped catching regional birds altogether, I guess), and disqualifies squawkabilly due to its not being able to evolve.
