Never knew who this guy really was cuz i don’t really keep up with marathons but I’m glad I found him. Lol watching that run actually brought me to tears. He is very inspirational, intelligent, and humble human being. Congrats to Eliud Kipchoge

Bernard Lagat is such an underrated legend, at the age of 44 years old, he's running at this mindblowing pace in such ease and just to help another athlete who was one of his most fierce competitors on the track for years!! He also took a part in Nike breaking 2!! He definitely doesn't take the credit he deserves as one of the best long-distance runners in history!!

When I heard Bernard Lagat was the captain of the pacemaking team, I knew Kipchoge will do it. Bernard is on was one of the best during his time, disciplined and a fierce competitor. Eliud really had the right people around him.

Eliud Kipchoge is in so many ways a true champion for me. Such a humble, nice and talented guy! He is the greatest sportsman in marathon but still a teamplayer and he takes himself not too serious. A true champion as sportsman and as human. Congrats Eliud!!

I think it's a good place to mention that Brigid Kosgei has broken women's marathon world record by running 2:14:04 (81secs faster than previous record). The record that seemded to be untouchable, but once again, No human is limited

I, and I’m sure others, would like to know more about Kipchoge’s diet. Pre, during and post to include the nutritional value and how it differs from what most marathoners currently eat and drink during training. Thank you, 10/15/19

"The Runner" and "Total Running Productions" have done some phenomenal videos on his diet. I haven't seen anything on the nutritional value per se but they break down how their diet is mostly plant-based, the meat they do consume at his running camp is from farm-raised animals who have not been pumped full of GMO, hormones, steroids, etc. but they do consume a lot of carbs... Like for breakfast they will consume tea and bread. Ugali (flour, meal, and water, I think) is a big one as mentioned in another post. One of the videos mentioned how they don't eat protein bars and stuff that is common in the states.

I can see Eliud breaking the two hours barrier again in Berlin is the weather was perfect and he had some tough competition. Just imagine a fit Bekele and in a tiptop shape next to him during the whole marathon. They can also use the help of a machine like Geoffrey Kamworor who could push them both beyond their limits during at least half of the marathon. I think if Eliud and Bekele don't do it in an official race, Kamroror would be the upcoming marathon emperor, especially with his mind-blowing half-marathon record at such a young age, he's only 26 while Kipchoge 34 and Bekele 37!!!

Kamworor is definately one of the heirs if not the heir. He already trains with Kipchoge...and Kipchoge was there when Kamworor won his first marathon..I think he mentors him. I noticed that the super elite Kenyan marathoners were not in this challenge--they probably have to train for their own races. Bekele is too unpredictable.

What percentage of effort is saved by drafting? In cycling, the % saved is very high while drafting at 20-30 mph but while riding under 15 mph the % of effort saved is greatly reduced. I wonder what the wind tunnel testing says for running Eliuds marathon pace.

Also I'd like to see a comparison between this and the normal cycling drafting formation in a team i.e. often a single line. Why don't cyclists use this formation if it's more efficient?

Peter Wilkins They said in the video this running formation is solely to protect Kipchoge. In cycling I guess the goal is similar, deliver the sprinter to the line as fresh as possible, but such a formation just can’t happen in the peloton when it’s 4+ riders wide.

I love the fact that science creates chances for human to achieve greater goals. Without science ("cheating" shoes, formation...), Kipchoge won't be able to achieve this world record. But at the same time, without Kipchoge, this world record won't be set, because as of now, Kipchoge is the only person that can run this fast and this long.

I know Eliud is a marathon beast, the best out there, but if he needs those pacemakers to give him an "aerodynamic advantage" then should the run count? Who's to say if he could have done it without them or not.

Not likely because his best time previously was a minute and a half slower. That is about 3.4 seconds per mile over those 26 miles.

What the don't tell you this guy discovered his talent by mistake or by cicurmstance, necessity is the morther of invention, was a milkman supplying milk by bicycle one day the bicycle broke down he had to run so the milk could not go bad to borrow from his friend the people who saw him run up down the hill advised him to try running as a career, the rest is history Viva my country man kipchoge.

Am not clear. Pacers join in the middle of the race? So alone he cannot do in under 2 hours. How is it a world record in that case. The conditions are different ? Just seeking clarity?

The ineos 1:59 challenge wasn’t eligible for an official world record. But at the time, Kipchoge was the marathon WR holder with 2:01:39 hours (in Berlin marathon 2018) which he broke later in Berlin 2022 at 2:01:09 hours. Although the current WR belongs to kelvin kiptum at 2:00:35 hours.

Wouldn’t encourage smoking but as long as you dont smoke like every 2 hours your lungs are gonna be pretty much fine if you work out a decent amount. I dont mean medically or whatever, you can still get cancer but I’m saying it wont make much difference with running.

Regardless of how much the pacers were paid, they also gained invaluable practice from the entire project. Plus, many world class athletes would have given anything to be part of that project

I find it hard to believe that any of the world class pacers participated in this "$$Corporate event$$" for free. Yes, they wanted to be part of the "$historic project$," but millions went into staging this event. Nike stood to make millions and so did INEOS. Kipchoge didn't run under 2-hours just for the hell of it. He was compensated, I assume, quite well--and I'm sure that he would've wanted the pacers to get a slice of the pie. The pacers, I'm thinking had their travel expenses covered and way much more.

For sure that day I thought he wouldn't make it especially the last mile he run infront coz the distance was to far to the finishing line and seconds were just counting either he win 159 or he ruin it😂and yet he was waving to the crowd rather than to finish first,, that's the time I approved I owned him coz I shouted his name almost to carry the TV and run to help him finish I thought he was wasting the seconds 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The pace was carefully calculated and maintained for him to finish at 1:59:49 Giving him 10 seconds margin of error without excessively tiring him. By the time the pace car, and then the pacemakers dropped off, it was a no-brainer that he could now afford to burn out his reserve energy without fear of tiring, since the finish was in sight. While waving to the crowd he was at a faster pace than he has run for one hour and 58 minutes, so no risk there either. As long as he was within the projected time, no harm done, since it would not count as a world record, but a world first. You don't chase two rabbits at once - his words. For the day, any time under two hours was mission accomplished.

Not taking anything away from Kipchoge he's one of the few greatest runners ever but... they created a team who starts randomly in middle of the race and creates wind barrier. Why not just use a car with big glass barrier to stop wind resistance ? Event organaizers said something like "let him cheat. a little bit. not too blatant. just a little bit so we still could advertise this as world record" . Again not taking anything away this is great media stunt rather than a record.

It’s hardly an unassisted record if the runner needs others around him to give him an aerodynamic advantage. The fact that the pacemakers change out ever so often makes it even less of an achievement. They shouldn’t be allowed to run unless they start together and run from start to finish

The technical director for the programme stated clearly that he would have preferred no car as it messed with the aerodynamics. It didn't make it easier for the runners at all. But as other posters above have asked, there's not much in this video about why this formation worked over so many others.

Obras y arreglos its not cheating, its just assisting as all of these was just to prove that somebody could run sub 2 .. 👍🏻 if they assisted you, can you do the same? Btw, if u run , its never all about the record..

That's pretty stupid because bicyclists rely on drafting just like runners have for decades of racing.

The drafting really doesnt help much What really helps is a steady pace. Im sure he could run an official marathon in 1:59 with a steady pace

@@aok9153 In the first place drafting is definately a benefit over the longer distince races. There are studies that have been done to demonstrate the effectiveness of drafting. Athletes wouldn't rely on it if it wasn't helpful to them. The pacers also play a huge role in pushing the Eliud to to his limit. That is the whole point of breaking records in running. Without other runners to push each other we would never see the records as often as they are. And Eliud was definately running a steady pace because the PACE CAR was setting the pace with the added support of the pacers running with him. Sorry, based on these points your argument is baseless.
