The antlion spends a long period underground and undergoes a metamorphosis into a flying insect. Similar to how a nymph becomes a dragonfly. Which is what vibrava is. Flygon is that flying Pokemon reaching a stronger stage
I was just about to say this! I made a Fakemon with the same concept where a cuckoo evolves to a roadrunner evolves to a bustard, which kinds looks like a turkey.
The reason they a wood pecker evolves into a toucan is actually because there in the same faimly and the closet animal related to a toucan is a woodpecker. Anatomically(otherwise known as which one evolved first) Woodpeckers have been around longer. Meaning that a woodpecker over time evolved into a toucan. It's possible for a carnivore to evolve to shift into a herbivore but even then toucans are documented omnivores
yeah it could even get 2 more evos, one whichis a lazy fat panda (defensive) and representing laziness/failiure in life and then another more hyper pure fighting or fighting fairy pancham evo which is a 'clean' legit fighter
The reason they used the item trade evolution I believe is because they needed an in universe reason for why these Pokemon can evolve now. "Electrizers or whatever they're called are in the Sinnoh region so now Electabuzz can evolve." Not the best reason but a reason nonetheless.
@@castform7 No the reason that they did trade evolutions was so that if you didn’t have any friends to trade with you had to buy another game and another DS in order to get one lol. It’s the same reason each game has version exclusives
When considering evolutions, it’s important to remember that most later-Gen Pokémon are based on themes or abstract concepts. While most Gen 1 ‘mons follow a rule of “just make the monster bigger,” Later Gens instead build onto the concept the Pokémon is based on.
@@monke12354 it’s not. Just look how good gen 1 designs are. Ken sugimori art at it’s best. Evolution that makes sense at least and real monsters. Most new mon’s are hybrids between simple object’s and monsters. Sometimes they are just object’s. You find that debateable? You are kidding right.
Oh lord. It's gotta be Monday at precisely 12PM or 6AM depending on which form you want, you have to take 44 damage while holding a Pearl then go to a lake and surf to the centre then level up and then hold the console sideways while saying a mythic ancient prayer you find in one of the caves (make sure your mic is on).
@@crimsonwizahd2358 but yeah this isn't difficult to figure out if you caught more than one wurmple (for some reason..) or caught a cascoon/silcoon instead
@@poppythedogofwonders actually that's basically the Lycanrock forms. Gotta evolve it during the day for the midday form, at night for the midnight form, and for the dusk form it has to have the ability "own tempo" and level up between the hours of 5-5:59am or pm.
On top of Golem and Machamp swapping their number of arms, Graveler transforms from a rock with eyes and a face, to a reptile that’s surrounded by rocks, and Machoke transforms from a reptile with fangs into Machamp with its round lips with no fangs
Yamask's Pokédex entry also speaks of the stone slab it carries being cursed. So while your explanation of its design makes sense, my theory of why it evolves under those specific conditions is this: when it's weakened, the curse on the slab is able to take over Yamask and thus turn it into Runerigus.
Fun fact: Runerigus' Japanese name is "Deathbarn" and it's absolutely hilarious Also yeah toucans actually DID evolve from the same common ancestor as woodpeckers. I study biology and even I find this sorta stuff absolutely wild lol
For Inkay and Malamar, you also have to consider that inversion is kind of their design theme, initially being the only Pokemon to learn Topsy-Turvy, while also potentially having the ability Contrary. And it was a great way to make use of a new handheld feature. Also, while double checking the Topsy-Turvy point on Bulbapedia, I learned there is a squid that inverts itself, at least temporarily, so there is that as well. I find it funny that Yamask to Runerigus is such a complicated evolution and I got it by complete accident and chance a few days after release, before it was even confirmed what actually made it evolve on Serebii. I think I was looking for a Pokemon in that area, had Yamask in my party to level it a bit because I planned to use it later. Saw an item shining on the ground, ran under the rock thing to get to it... Game stopped. "What? Yamask is evolving." I was kind of confused because I can't think of any other Pokemon that evolves without a trade or item and without a level up triggering it. Happiness triggers when it gains a level, location based evolutions trigger then as well, even Feebas' beauty. I thought for a while it was based on number of steps or something, but obviously learned the actual cause eventually
Sirfetch'd needing 3 critical hits in one battle is beyond "wtf" for me. Not the hardest evolution but one of the more tedious and definitely one of the most random.
I’m disappointed you’d call such a cute bug ugly… they have been shaped by millions of years of evolution as a calculated ant enemy it’s just fuzzy and needs love
@@dundee6402 I mean Pokémon tends to do that with its insect-like designs where they... basically perform a step down from anthropomorphization where they don't necessarily make the insects more humanoid, but do make them more vertebrate-like. Trapinch's case is probably more justified than most, not being bug-type itself.
Well... I sure wasn't expecting Knightmares and Jotaro Kujo today, that's for sure! Amazing video bro, now I want a Hisuian evolution of Pancham that's not a deliquent. Hope you had an amazing birthday yesterday.
In Pokemon X, I had a Greninja and Pancham. I never realized that leveling up AND having a dark type on your team was needed. I read it later on somewhere and just just felt lucky I guess?
2:23 About having no lore attached to Feebas' changed evolution method. At least the Prism Scale is referred to as the "Schönschuppe" (literally Beauty Scale) in german, so there is that. Still not massively relevant, but it's _something_ . 9:29 So Bill (who in-universe invented the machine needed to trade) (Why do you need a machine for this, just exchange your Pokéballs? Countless rental Pokémon showed us that isn't a problem.) inadvertently became Dr. Frankenstein. I wonder what he thinks of Galar's Fossil Pokémon...
I don’t know (save an internet search) how I would have figured out how to evolve Pancham if my eevee I was intending to be a Sylveon didn’t become an Umbreon instead lol
I'm pretty sure you can evolve a Feebas with its beauty stats in any main series game past Gen4. The contest stats do exist in non-contest games, they are just unable to be seen by the player, and except HGSS you cannot raise it by any means. But if you happen to transfer a high beauty stat Feebas from, let's say, ORAS to Sun/Moon, the high beauty stat Feebas will still evolve by raising a level.
im pretty sure especially in the case of the earlier generations, there isnt always a logical reason behind evolutions such as haunter to gengar. they simply just wanted kids to trade with each other so they drew names from a hat and boom
Fun fact: woodpeckers and Toucans are from the same order- Piciformes. I used to think the evolution of woodpecker to toucan was stupid as well until I found that out.
True. Idk how we were supposed to figure out not only how to find it but also how to evolve it in gen 3 back when the internet wasn't as big. This is also the same gen with the regi puzzle which was possibly even more complicated.
Hours and hours searching each square of that route in Pokemon Ruby...only to find it in the last square, all based from a popular phrase smh. I caught one and just kept moving it game to game and breeding. I refused to go through that again, no knowing how the games would be after Haha
The popular theory is Dragonite and Gyrados swapped families. Gyrados’ body was originally intended to be an ugly Dragonair evolution, and Magikarp was gonna become a neopet looking dragonite
A few others Lycanrock has three forms depending on what time of day it levels up. It's Dusk Form takes that one step further and requires it to have the ability "Own Tempo" and evolve between 5-5:59 to evolve. That's my personal favorite weird one
How did some of these Pokemon evolve in the wild, where there's nobody to give them blue Pokeblocks, turn the device they're not on because they're in the wild upside-down, trade them to someone else? And for those who are "area unknown" after such an evolution, were those Pokemon only discovered when Trainers began training Pokemon, and even then, how did they discover how to evolve them? i.e. was Machamp only discovered once people started training Machokes, and someone discovered by accident that after giving their friend a Machoke, their friend had a new Pokemon instead?
I always thought accelgor's looking mummified after it's traded with karrablast and evolves also kind of reflected actual mummies having beetle-shaped charms on them. These were scarab charms, not exactly Carabus, but with a similar sounding and probably related name at least.
Starts with a "makes sense" evoluton that actually makes little sense, or at least less than it could have. The final evolution for Squirtle was meant to look more in the style of Wartortle (the white thingys but then even more present), qnd Blastoise just as a standalone pokemon. It really doesn't make that much sense that Squirtle and Wartortle suddenly get cannons out of nowhere.
Why do pokemon like Gengar and Alakazam evolve via trade? Because they want people to access otherwise unobtainable content as to entice them to buy the same game at least twice.
For hitmontop he's actually based on the capoeira martial art, just like Hitmonchan is a boxer and Hitmonlee a kickboxer. The defense and attack being the same likely stems from the fact that on capoeira you can't really tell if the opponent is attacking or dodging/flourishing until the last moment
It's worth mentioning that runerigus has a lore reason and that's taking that damage and entering the stone whatever was enough for runes to take over and basically destroy yamask soul and create runerigus.
Tyrogue represents an antic fighting style wich is “greek wrestling” kinda. It’s called pankration and was used in the olympics. It’s believed it gave birth to all modern fighting styles like boxing, kickbox, kapoera and so on. That’s why tyrogue can evolve in each of them. Because he allready knows the basics for each fighting style. Speaking of evolutions that makes no sense… 😤
An acorn to a demon is literally a tree growing and seedot is a hollow shell, to nuzleaf who is Pinocchio a marionette puppet again a hollow shell wanting to be a real boy. And shiftry is based on a tengu who also has a long nose and is able to read minds control wind, and protects the forest.
I'm reminded of a discussion I had a few years ago about new forms for Eevee, a Steel type and a Poison type. The method to get these forms would follow a similar path. Eevee would have to know Iron Tail or Sludge Bomb, hold a new item called the Mystery Vial, and level up in one of two specific areas.
