This footage was shot in the city of Nuremberg on 26 April 1945, after Nuremberg was taken by units of the U.S. Army. The battle for Nuremberg lasted five days. The capture of Nuremberg by units of the 7th U.S. Army was of high symbolic value; strategically, the largely destroyed Nuremberg was not of particular importance in this phase of the war. The military defense of Nuremberg was hopeless due to the overall situation and the superiority of the US Army. The execution of the Nero command was not possible any more, so that important infrastructure was preserved.

My father was stationed there from about this time to early 1946. His railroad battalion had the job of getting the trains running again.

Excellent 1945 film of the city where the biggest Rallies of the Nazi Party took place,and also of course, the famous trials of their Leadership,at least the ones who didn't opt for the quick way out....thanks for uploading this important historical footage.

Yes the Bakery Sommer is still existing in Nürnberg, but they moved to another Place

The Wilhelm Sommer Bakery still runs to this day @0:26. His sons and family expanded the business in recent years but that store is actually still there.. I wonder if they’ve ever seen this footage?

Hallo die schmale gasse dürfte bei lauf sein. die hohe bahnbrücke mit den bögen dürfte bei schwabach sein. Einige aufnahmen knoblauchsland.

@Werner Monoton ja das dachte ich mir auch. Flughafen mit umgebendem sebalder reichswald und knoblauchsland im norden richtung erlangen. Der lorenzer reichswald is ja im süden. Nach westen hin erscheint dann fürth. Lorenz wurde evangelisch während sebald katholisch blieb im 30 jährigen krieg. In allen beiden weltkriegen und im 30j. Krieg spielte diese gegend stets eine grosse rolle.. reichsparteitage und schwedenturm in zirndorf mit der letzten schlacht 1648 südlich richtung roth. Es wiederholte sich 1945 ud darf sich weder physisch noch psychhisch nie wiederholen.. darum war 2020 eine lektion in gesundheit gottergebenheit selbständigkeit unabhängigkeit.

I believe this was shot by George Stevens with his personal camera. What stands out to me is that the german civilians look well feed and healthy making a myth of their deprivations.

I was in Nuernberg in 1975 and 1976, 1982, coming from Brittany,.... and seeing these images, if somebody had asked me where they had been shot, I would have answered Nuernberg !

Maybe. But the difference is that it would be extremely stupid to use a nuke on Germany because it would also probably damage countries around them as well as add several more thousands of innocent civilians to the list of those killed in allied bombings raids.

The Jeep is equipped with a forward protruding metal arm to guard against the wires the Germans would strand across the road at head height.

Possibly a prosthetic. Plastic surgery was invented in WWI with artists painting on sculpted pieces fit for noses, jaws and lips.

"Запад" большой, также как и "Восток", а про "вечно" даже "вяликие" мира сяго не заикались. И даже если в Вас воплотился дух И. Сталина, даже он очень часто "hat kleine Brötchen gebacken". Маленькое замечание: позаботьтесь о своём здоровье и старайтесь не надорваться. Нам на этом "Западе" соответственно хочется прожить хотя бы завтрашний день, а про послезавтрашний лучше и не заикаться.

The Army didnt change much from 1945-1979....still hauling trailers and company designations on the bumpers. I guess it all changed in the 80's when our MOS' became obsolete and replaced by computer geeks!

Germany never stood a chance. America was fighting the Germans at only half strength. The other half, the Marines, were in the Pacific fighting the Japanese. America at full strength would have torn through Germany like a hot knife through butter.

@@carlklein9385, I think the Russians might have played a part in Germanys defeat too seeing as 80% of German casualties were on the Eastern front. It’s a little ironic that Europe lives in freedom today thanks in part to the communists.

@@AJ-qn6gd No No No. Without western allies and lendlease support in russia they would be lose The war. Remember almost 10 million German soldier were in western front and 8million surrender when USA and western allied troops advances towards Berlin. Eastern front Germany lose about 6 million soldier. Alone against Germany russians had no chances to win.
