I personally use SM57 on top and i5 on the bottom. I really liked the SE Electronics R1 in this comparison and would be interested in trying it out on my own drums. However, that said, when I've been in the studio, it has been whatever the engineer that puts there!

Using a combination of mics like the SM57 and i5 can indeed produce some incredible sounds. The SE Electronics R1 is definitely worth trying. Thanks for sharing your studio experiences, Jeremy!

If I must use only one mic, it would be a SM57. But, this video is very interesting because i like the sound of the Audix, the SE2A and the Aston Spirit too.

The SM57 is indeed a workhorse in the drum recording world. It's great to hear you found the video interesting and discovered some new mic preferences. Happy recording, Adonis!

I will be boring and say that I liked the SM57. And maybe it's just me being conditioned to like it because that is what I always use. But truth is, I like it most. It has clarity, punch and cut and it promotes the attributes I want from a snare. You can complicate things with a second mic on the bottom, and I usually put that one much lower level, but just enough to get a bit more snare sound when I want it and it makes the sound snappy. But you got to be careful with the phase and potential issue that comes anytime you add more mics.

It's hard to beat the SM57 for its clarity and punch, but experimenting with bottom mics can add that extra layer. You're right about phase issues though, always something to be vigilant about. Thanks for the insights!

Audix i5 or SM57... These are my favorites.

Both the Audix i5 and SM57 are solid choices, @DamianS1893! Each brings its own flavor to snare drum miking. Do you lean towards one for specific genres or settings?
