Squelch Squad! Welcome back to another episode! This week we do some urban exploration... Watch as we walk through the Tower of Grain - an incredible abandoned Fort/Gun tower. Situated 500m out from the shoreline, this tower was created in the mid 1800's to protect the surrounding docks of Sheerness and Chatham. It became disused in 1956 and has stood here eerily ever since...
We really hope you enjoy this squelchy adventure, drop a comment and let us know what you'd like to see more of in future videos! Did you enjoy the Urbex??

It was an amazing site… I was a little apprehensive when I saw two people walking out ahead of you. Did you meet up with them but not put it in the video? You got two strong finds. Can’t wait to see what you do next! The blanks between action shots got filled with commercials. Whatever you do will be an adventure for all of us.

When they speak of smooth bore guns, they are speaking of the inside surface of the gun. In early guns that surface was smooth. Apparently when they replaced the guns, the new guns had was rifling. This is a surface that has a spiral grove running up the barrel. What this does is cause the ammunition to spin, so it's sin was more precise and accurate. Smooth bores were less accurate.

Imagine the exciting scene, a century and a half ago: The tower commander trains his brass telescope seaward, from the highest level: “Sargent Major ... There ... East south east, 350 yards. Do you see it? An onion bottle protruding from the mud ... Green, from the looks of it ... Have it retrieved at once!”

Hi, the range of history is very interesting, I'm imagining the Martello was built with the use of horse drawn wagons and barges at high tide (all those granite blocks!) then I guess later construction would have used motorised transport. People and goods all up and down that walkway for a hundred years! Thank you for the interesting tour and view from the top, rather you then me. Glad you have all recovered and are bouncing back for more adventures, looking forward to what the next video brings. Take care and stay safe, cheers xx

It is always grand to have a CAT SCAN done! I had to put my little feral kitty down that I had adopted in October, she finally had a winter in a warm home and a warm lap always waitting for her. I took her in because she was suffering from Pneumonia, whe was healthy for a couple of months until she got it again but the underlying issues of the pneumonia was Feline Autoimmune disease. I miss her warm silky little warm body on my lap.... oh gosh I brought myself to tears because of your precious baby. Nicola had taken us to the Tower of Grain a few years ago, I think it is so amazing but the graffitti always sets me off, people who destroy history just makes me want to give them a toothbrush and tell them to clean it all off! LOL Yes I was that kind of Mum lol. It is so sad how it has deteroated when up cloase but far away it is so amazing standing against the blue sky. I greatly loved the tour of the "facilities". Thank you for a grand time. God Bless and much love

Where I grew up there were 2 civil war forts built to protect the Bay of Mobile from the Union. Ft. Morgan and Ft. Gaines. Ft Gains is on an Island. There was an natural freshwater spring that produced fresh water and at night you could light it and burn the natural gas. But alas, the drilling of oil has stopped the spring and the natural flame. This tower as well as Hoo and Darnell remind me of home. Where I live now, we have numerous forts from the Revolutionary War , the French and Indian wars as well as Civil war Batteries that protected the coast much like the tower. I do love the old history. Josie, can you imagine having to run along that staircase and those walkways to man the guns?? At night?? Not me.

What an awesome adventure, and despite my vertigo I thoroughly enjoyed it.😁 My daughter lives on sheppey so I might get to see some of this first hand in the summer . You were both pretty brave climbing that tower I didn't like the look of that ladder as it barely reached the platform, yikes scary stuff , I would love to see more of this content. Thanks for another wonderful video, much love to you both and good luck in your future adventures 👍😘

It's well worth a visit in spite of the awful graffiti the structure in it's surroundings is very impressive 😀

I enjoyed your exploration of a bit of history. I always loved exploring castles and ruins in my limited time in Europe, from Ephesus to Gibraltar (ex Navy) and found it amazing how... nonchalant the attitude in Europe was to the amazing history all around us. I visited an antique shop in Toulon and had thought I'd walked into a museum. There was even a Roman signet ring. For sale. I remember seeing small swivel deck guns being used as garden fence posts with chain strung between them in Gibraltar and just staring. I'd love to see more urban exploration of the castles, ruins, and shipwrecks of England, but I'm sure that could end up being a channel all on its own.

Hello Larry, good to hear from you and thank you for your comments. It is interesting thinking about different countries and cultures relationship with historical objects. I can just picture the deck guns being used a fence posts! Take care 👍😀

Big up the Medway massive! I’m from Strood originally but I didn’t know this tower was even there. So cool to see. Thanks.

Hiya Josie and Andy, It was a little late in the video to be warning those of us who are acrophobic. 😑 I actually started feeling a bit queasy when y’all went across that one bridge with no railing. 😵‍💫 I did endure and truly enjoyed the video. The views were pretty darn cool. I can totally imagine the soldiers being on lookout for incoming threats. Thank you for this amazing exploring video. Good luck and have fun on your next adventure. -JT

So sorry JT! Pleased you could appreciate the views though, it's further off the shore than you think, reckon it would be pretty grim to be stationed there for any extended period of time. Take care 😀

Wonderful. What a magnificent feat of engineering, awesome to think of just the logistics of getting the materials out there. Thanks Pies for an excellent explore.
