Cannot believe they can leave a building as big as this unused when we have so many people sleeping rough keep up the good work guys ...

Just for a bit of background the first part of the building that you entered up to about 6 minutes was used as the sheriff court whilst the main sheriff court in Dumfries town centre was being renovated in the 1990s. Hence the more modern flooring, staircase and decor. The chapel was used as the lighthouse church in the mid/late 2000s and a youth group hence the pool table and decor in some of the rooms. There was also a radio station situated in the upper floor next to the chapel called Alive Radio back in 2006. There was also a film made here (2002) about Irish nuns called The Magdeleine Sisters. Things you missed: -Nuns graveyard in the grounds outside. -The holding cells for the court in the basement, very eerie, especially when trying to find electrical switch boards in the pitch black.

Background to the Benedictine Convent, Dumfries [credit: Canmore org]: Corbelly Hill Convent was recorded on Tuesday 16 August [date unknown] as part of the Threatened Buildings Survey. On Tuesday 9 August 2022 a fire broke out affecting the northern part of this large building. The survey provides a record of the building after the fire, but before any structural alterations or demolitions are undertaken to make the building structurally safe. The dowager Marcia, Lady Herries funded the new convent for the nuns of the Perpetual Adoration on Corbelly Hill in Dumfries. The initial much larger scheme by Pugin and Pugin was exhibited at the Royal Academy and published in the _Building News_ 30 December 1881. A more modest scheme designed by Pugin and Pugin was built in 1881-4, presumably intended as the first phase of the grander published scheme. The initial building consisted of the chapel and an L-plan range of accommodation for the Convent. This was extended by James Barbour, not following the original plans, in 1890. He added the substantial block to the south to house the Convent school. The convent closed in 1988 and moved to Largs. Amongst other uses, It later housed a temporary Sheriff court. The building has been empty for some time and has been suffering from vandalism. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Teenager charged after massive fire at historic Corbelly Hill convent in Dumfries. The historic former convent on Corbelly Hill, near the town’s Maxwell Street, was engulfed in flames in the early hours of 9 August 2022. The property, which dates back to 1884, has been abandoned for a number of years and attempts to sell the property twice, in 2008 and 2020 failed. Police Scotland confirmed on Tuesday that a 19-year-old man had been charged in connection with the incident. A statement by the force read: 'Police in Dumfries can confirm that a 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fire at the Convent on Maxwell Street, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday 9 August 2022. 'A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal, and he is expected to appear at court at a later date.' [Credit: STV News]

Good to have this record of it, as it seems to have been destroyed by fire overnight (9/8/22). The local vandals had had several goes at burning it down in the past.

That is in a remarkable undamaged condition for its age. .... It just goes to show that some 19th century buildings can be looked after and not left to rot. .... This must be Grade II Listed I guess ? ... This could be brought back from abandoned - to hospitable with not a vast amount of money being spent on restoration. .... I do hope it gets the love and care it deserves in the not too distant future ? ... Another great tour lads, Thank you.

The building was not an orphanage, it was a school. The pedestal in the chapel are actually the steps of a huge altar by the famous Pugin family. It is now in a Catholic church in Edinburgh.

Yeah I’d walk through an abandoned building with internal CCTV as there’s often something amazing waiting to be uncovered inside. Also, should you get caught exploring and accused of vandalism, the CCTV could act as your evidence that you were simply just exploring, not vandalising the property.
@Urbandoned
@Urbandoned 2 года назад
That's a very good point and precisely. You always have to hope that the CCTV isn't being monitored directly and is played back later, because, otherwise, there aren't many easier confirmations of trespassers to a security guard than live footage of a person inside.

What a beautiful place. The sad thing is that it is left abandoned and unloved like that. I hope it can be used for some purpose again.Yes I would explore it CCTV and all. The worst that could happen would be getting escorted out by security or police. I reckon the power is on to keep the security system running. Worth the risk I would say. Thanks for the tour.

I'd imagine it has internal CCTV because it's still owned by the Catholic Church, although abandoned. The past horrific histories of many of the religious buildings meant they had to abandon them before they were brought to rights!

The Catholic Church never owned the building. It was built and owned by the Herries family. When the nuns moved to Largs it was sold to a business man from Northern Ireland who owned it for decades before selling it to a local firm.

Beautiful building - that Stained Glass was absolutely stunning. This sounds odd to say on an urbandoned video but the lack of security after the alarm went off is somewhat concerning. Makes me worry about vandals getting in there and there being no response until it's too late. Hopefully this building can be given some love and restored. It looks like the beautiful garden's at the front are all gone now.

A beautiful building, with no doubt a troubled past. The Catholic churches are very rarely sold, they tend to hang on to them and sadly let them rot as they own so many and legally too much work that takes years to get anywhere with. Great find, thanks 🇦🇺

Yeah I would go through an abandoned building with cctv. Would do it at night though and take a cheap eBay infrared torch to point at the cameras as I passed them. Being cctv cameras the have no infrared filter so my torch temporarily blinds the camera keeping my face a secret. 👍
