Suburbs are zoned for business or residential. Having no businesses zoned in neighborhoods (they are usually adjacent for convenience) and many have parks, playgrounds, clubhouses, pools. This keeps traffic low, strangers at a minimum and neighbors able to monitor unknown people around their families and property. Our kids can play and run the neighborhood streets with less worry. It works for us but I’m sure there are other great ways to structure places. It just depends what on how they developed and what the people need/want.

Remember that the majoroty of the houses in major cities have Homeowner Associations. Which you pay extra for..thry have a lot of rules, what you can and cannot have in your house, dictates thr color of your house and roof. Read and research. It used to all be rice fields. I lived in Cypress, Tx aa a child, and I remember the rice fields along hwy 290 and the large rice dryer next to it. Developers amazingly built 2 new neighborhoods smack on top of the rice fields without considering it was a marsh!!! Those houses didn't do well. They flooded and sunk! The other neighborhood didn't get completed. Those houses sat there a long time. Then another developer came in and made "water front homes". The waterfront was just some canals or a pond.

"I had no idea there were houses right near where we are" - Houston is famous for having no zoning. They put up any kind of building pretty much anywhere they want. I don't know about satellite towns like Katy. But someday maybe they'll put in some all-night lighted pickleball courts next door.

My brother was a Constable's Deputy in a neighborhood in Katy. Most of those neighborhoods have $$$ HOAs $$$. They can be good to keep the neighborhood frome having junk cars, trash, unmowed lawns...but can also make unreasonable rules like no flags. It looks like your neighborhood allows flags!!! Yeah! That huge culvert (the concrete pipe) will be flooded this spring with so much water!!! Several years ago Houston and all surrounding areas flooded...it was a disaster. Americans really take American suburbia for granted. I'm a city guy myself, but I really appreciate American suburbs. They're really nice. Much better than any other country I've been to. Europe has the better cities, I think, because of the walkability, but I think American suburbs are the best.

@BP-or2iu
@BP-or2iu 4 месяца назад
@@BTinSF As a Louisianan and former New Orleanian, I would have to disagree. Certain neighborhoods are walkable, but like, you're not gonna walk from the Riverbend to the Lakefront or something. You often have to drive from one walkable neighborhood to another walkable neighborhood. Also, it's unbearably hot for 6 months and no one with a car is walking around all over the city. Streetcars are limited in scope. It's not like NYC or Chicago or other East coast cities where the entire city is connected by rail. And Charleston is similar. Sure, the historic center and downtown is walkable, but the rest of the city not so much. Almost everyone owns a car there. So if by "available" you mean "possible" then sure. It's also possible to walk around Houston and use the extensive bus system. Almost no one does.

Most gated neighborhoods in the US seem to have no security at the entrances and the "gates" are purely for show. Of course somebody has to pay for the security where it exists. Typically that's an HOA. Actually, the area Mikey was walking through seemed to have a wall along the highway and I assumed that was for sound, not security (that road noise seemed awfully loud). Otherwise, it wasn't gated.
