I'm back again to take you on another Magical Mystery Tour.
This time I head to the Lake District and investigate its ancient stone circles.
What were these Neolithic sites used for? Trading posts? Land markers? Meeting spots? Rituals? Magic? Energy Fields?
Let's go find out!

Just found this video researching stone circles in the Lake District. Swinside Stone Circle is the only one I have been to. It's a beautiful location. It's amazing the feeling of peace you can get from these places. Great watch thanks I'll be sure to visit the others on the list hopefully soon.

Tom, You were speaking about 10 stones in a rectangle inside Castlerigg circle and being highly unusual and known at one other site only. Do you mean Avebury? There is a line of stones near the once Obelisk stone which Dr. Wm Stukeley saw lying prone and I've estimated it at not less than 90 tons weight. However Gillings & Pollard back in '17 discovered that this extant line is in fact the remaining west side of a square, the other lost (small) stones, probably standing as their sisters 4'6" to 5 foot high (having now gone and sold for building stone and roadmending which usual in the day). The rectangle being of some size and perhaps consisting of 20 to 25 stones. There are also some 7 or 8 post holes found, mostly in the north entrance and one to the south entrance found by Keiller and all being on a differing alignment to the later stone entrances. They must belong to other posts which preceded the later stones and the post holes belonging to the very first Avebury of lines and avenues before there were ever circles there. Touching again on that rectangle of stones and those probably replacing posts, surround the now lost Obelisk stone and that standing close by a flagstone floor of a rectangular dwelling now dated at the late Mesolithic/early Neolithic and similar to two other dwellings. One found on Portland with flints and other implements and importantly with a hearth, the other some small distance off Bouldnor Cliff on the northwest side of the Isle of Wight and now being submerged under some few metres of water. That was found along with tools and importantly large lengths of worked timber and not before found dating before the Neolithic. Seems they may then have been on the foreshore and involved in shipbuilding. All interesting stuff.

We all stand on the shoulders of hose who have gone before. And, some stand (or stomp) on the toes of those who are here with us now. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
