Exploring Ben Cooper and Collegeville Halloween Costumes

When it came time to choose what costume we would wear for Halloween in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, there were only two names we needed to know… Ben Cooper and Collegeville. Between the two, every licensed character under the sun was an option for your Halloween costume of choice. A Collegeville or Ben Cooper mask, fragile and inaccurate as it was, would be all a Gen X kid needed to step into the role of his or her favorite character when paired with the sometimes surreal smocks that accompanied them.
We look back at the companies that used plastic smocks and vacuformed masks to create vintage Halloween empires that influenced multiple generations of children.

We didn't have much money so I only remember getting one of these costumes a time or two. Which was fine by me because they were very uncomfortable. I preferred a homemade costume.
@RetroDaze
@RetroDaze 10 месяцев назад
They definitely were NOT made for comfort. The worst part was how sweaty and itchy your face got behind the masks.

I was one of the many Devil variants in 1976 age 5. I can't remember if it was my mom or aunt that made me a tail to go with the costume. It had wire in it so it went out and stuck up in the air. I remember at school being paraded around the different classrooms of older kids and all of them kept smacking my tail as I'd walk by haha. The next year I was Batman. I THINK the costume for that was actually pretty decent, a cloth one and not vinyl. And yea I can still smell the inside of the mask, and remember the pools of sweat that would form around the mouth and chin. Great memories!

We suffered through vacuformed masks so today’s youth didn’t have to. 😆

I was really young, and remember having a princess costume. Not sure which company the costume came from though. It was fun just wearing a costume and going to a Halloween party!

By the time I was old enough to really enjoy Halloween circa 1985 my grandma made our Halloween costumes. I do remember lots of friends who had these store bought costumes, but we were kinda poor and my mom always said these store bought costumes were garbage.
@RetroDaze

Well she wasn’t wrong. 😆 They were not of good quality. But now that is part of the appeal of them.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have an album of nothing but every Halloween costume you wore for Trick or Treat in your life?

I remember these costumes like it was yesterday… ahem, okay more like 57 and less years ago. I remember I was Casper for a couple years. Frankenstein a few more. Mom and dad would save them for eons even though I wanted something new. One other thing that sticks in my mind was, mom always made me wear a blasted coat over my smock which I always wanted to show off as I went up to the doors. Mom said I could unzip my coat, ring the doorbell, (thinking now I must of looked like a little flasher) and afterwards zip it back up.
@RetroDaze
@RetroDaze 10 месяцев назад
Oh man. That would be upsetting when you want everyone to see your costume! The Casper one seemed pretty popular for several years. Of course Frankenstein is good any time.

I was Raggedy Ann my first year, then Bugs Bunny, then Smurfette, then Apricot from Strawberry Shortcake, then a flower girl (in an actual family wedding- that was 1982, so trick or treating wasn’t even an option that year) then Snow White and after that it was cheerleaders, cowgirls, and one year I wore the color guard uniform for the rival high school, and then it was mostly either my poodle skirt or my Renaissance Faire outfit. 😂

I was born in the early 90s, so I never had a chance to wear costumes by Ben Cooper or Collegeville. Some of the store-bought costumes that I did wear included the Red ranger, the red M&M, Winnie the Pooh and Poliwhirl from Pokémon. Not in the exact order, I mind you. Speaking of Ben Cooper, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the old Ben Cooper costumes brought back one year?
@RetroDaze

There are some available at Spirit that are for adults. The smocks just cover the torso like a shirt.

Wore these costumes as a kid and collect them as an adult. Like many here, I collect pretty much all Halloween merchandise as well as Mego, Lincoln, AHI, Tomland and Remco figures as well as comics, Mego playsets, vehicles, company literature, Wacky Packages , Imagineering Halloween items and so much more. I enjoyed your video very much and am about to subscribe. I'm looking forward to sharing some of my collection as I really enjoy seeing other collectors displays. Thank you for taking the time to share your collection with us. Much appreciated.
