We had a chance to go down and visit Brent Underwood at his ghost town and silver mine in Cerro Gordo! In this video, we explore the Cerro Gordo ghost town and museum, go underground to collect samples of ore and explore some of the old workings, and take a look at some of the historical silver smelters they had set up over 150 years ago to refine silver from the ore. Brent is going to send us the samples of ore we collected and then we can refine them into real, pure silver for Brent. I am excited to have Brent come up and visit our shop and join me in the refining process. Stay tuned for part 2 soon.

It is so frustrating for me as a retired career mine geologist to see so much mineral and not being physically able point out the minerals and highest grade ore. My specialty was old workings and interpreting the limitations of their technology. It was key to think from their perspective to analyze their intentions and what they would miss in finding unmined ore. It is tough not being able to effectively share.

That sounds super interesting. I have worked at a gold mine in the Mojave desert in CA and they are currently doing heap leach and stripping the entire mountain down. But originally it was underground with over 26 miles of tunnel. I was tasked with relocating a lot of the old equipment and artifacts from 1880-1910 and was finding myself looking up equipment and processes daily just to get a better understanding of what they were doing. Your job sounds like a awesome experience you are very lucky. I would love to do that every day.

Look up "Ghost Town Living" on YT and find Brent's public contact details. if you are reasonably close, he'd probably really like to see you and have your opinion of what he can do to keep the historical mine alive without simply sinking a new shaft etc.

Ok I checked out our local Silver mine here from roughly the same time 1400-ish to 1908 and it seems like the still standing structure is the "lead forge" where you would finalize the end product and the building that's missing with the sulfide on the hillside is what's called the "roaster" where you "only" heat part of the way to remove the sulfide and then you batch the product into the lead forge and make bullion bars and slag-bars which where shipped off site for sale which solves part of the mystery of where the slag went.

Jason, thank you for this presentation and meeting Brett and taking us on a tour of some of the workings at Cerro Gordo. I would be interested to see what you could learn from the processing of some of the Galena and the slag that was recovered. Given the significance of Cerro Gordo it may be time to form a consortium of You Tube hosts that specialize in mining, mining exploration and historic preservation to save places like this. There would be no doubt massive public interest and support. Thank you once again for this episode.

I was looking at the area in satellite imagery and a bit over 5 miles north of this ghost town there's some old aerial tram that, although I can't determine the exact start and end points, stretches over the mountain range between Cal 136, near "owens lake", and "salt lake" 13 miles distance... Crazy, cool, but crazy.

41:00 IDK how washing state is for old mines, but in the world wars, esp ww2 the government sent out scrappers to all these historic mines and they took all the steel they could out of them. the reason it usually starts up deeper is that the work crews only had so much space and were only there for a day. it's what was fast and easy to load

Very interesting video to see what Cerro Gordo looks like now! We stopped in there the summer 1975. Nobody lived there then and so we got to look all around. One of the craziest things I ever did was to climb down the manway next to the hoist shaft. That was a long way back up! Don’t think I could physically do it today. Im gonna have to look for all the pictures we took back then and get some copies to Brent.

On a different note, it’s cool to me how many separate RU-vid channels I enjoy watching all seem to either know each other or somehow know each other. I started watching Jason’s channel a long time before I started watching Brent’s channel and Dave Sparks before both. All these cool people seem like old friends. I paused it in front of the mine adit that Dave Sparks dug out with his trackhoe and just thought how cool is that, I remember when Dave dug it out.

Thank you I have learned so very much from watching your couple of videos of working with Brent Underwood. I am a gold panning and metal detecting hobbyist and what I've learned from these videos has been more valuable than any other video of ever seen even though it's not directly on topic it is very engaging and Non-Stop full of interesting bits of information that are side topics and tangents. I think that's where the learning is coming from for instance pointing out the dynamite radial imprints left over from the blast and the single Jack Dynamite hole. Anyways thank you and thank you mr.
