This is the second part of my journey in Suffolk (and Norfolk, briefly) in search of windmills. As well as exploring some delightful mills, Windmill Bob, takes me to a windmill repair shop. Also, I wildcamp in my van in a beautiful village overnight.
My videos are about searching for what England means to me. It is a personal journey.

I do love windmills, there's a couple of windmills near me Richard if your intrested in exploring or your ever in that area, I'll email you them if your intrested. Some lovely windmills in this video, it's cool that you were able to go inside to have a look. I think its also amazing that there are still people that restore and replace windmill parts, so good for our history and future, and it keeps people in jobs too which is excellent. And of course a lovely Church at the end, and some lovely properties also. Great video as always Richard.

Absolutely classic stuff Richard. Windmills, oast houses & lighthouses. The unique and sought after buildings that once defunct, often continue into a second life as much cherished homes....

Windmills if I'm not mistaken, were used by that master-race the Dutch to assist with land drainage, over 60% of which is below sea level. An invention that must have been highly successful across the ever breezy flat lands of Holland.

Richard this was great. I really enjoyed the interiors of the windmills and the workshop. Fascinating stuff to watch. You may already know this but you mentioned churches being remote from the nearby village. I heard years ago that this was due to plagues and epidemics etc. An infected village could move away from the perceived source of infection because the wooden houses were more ramshackle at the time. However, the stone built churches could not be moved so they stayed in the original location of the village. Once again lovely to watch you and Bob on your interesting tour.

Great video Richard and even I was impressed by the drone shots! They showed off the windmills excellently in this gorgeous mellow autumn sunshine. At last this awful summer weather seems to have settled into lovely autumn weather. Typical! Suffolk is a rather overlooked county. My cousins all grew up there so I know a few places a little. One of my cousins owns a very fine inn at Burston just outside Diss on the border with Norfolk and if you do go back I recommend you go and eat there. You definitely won’t regret it. Glad you liked Suffolk, it’s lovely because it is off the radar and hopefully stays that way. I have recently moved from Suffolk to Sussex and it was a big culture shock. There is a low population in Suffolk and I’m still coming to terms with the crowds of Sussex. In Suffolk you can drive on the back roads across the county and hardly see a car.

Hi Richard. I love windmills like you do. We have one close to us at Wilton, near Marlborough, which can also operate on special occasions. Ah!Ruston and Hornby. They are in a class of their own. And Wow! Not one, but two mills close together. That workshop was incredible. Such skill by those who work there. It’s a labour of love.
@nicstacey3605
@nicstacey3605 2 года назад
Another great VLog. many thanks. Two superb tower mills and the workshop was very interesting. Plenty more windmills in that area, I'm guessing, to let Windmill Bob show you round. Stupidly I had wondered what those large metal wheels were for on the walls of windmills (I've recently seen the windmill to the North of Ditchling you've done a previous log on and the one at Outwood to the NE of Crawley, both had them) to provide power from an static engine or traction engine. It clicked when the lovely old engine was shown. There are similar engines at Amberley Chalkpits museum. One was running very much like the one on show. Hoping you are surviving your lockdown fine. At least you're missing the stupidity around petrol stations at the moment!

Richard, I wanted to thank you for showing a part of Suffolk County. In 1990. while station in northern Germany, I planned a vacation (holiday) to visit Scotland, Wales, and England. In my plans, I wanted to visit where I was born. Born in Mildenhall, Suffolk. Unfortunately, those plans where stop, needed to go play in the sands of Saudi: Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm, so that vacation was gone. Some years later, I have been making plans to visit England, but something else got in the way: has a number in it. As I watched, I had a map of the county to see where everything was related to Mildenhall. I can say the coastal part of Suffolk is stunning. In addition, I understand the bit about isolation, as I went through it back in June. So chin up and all that good stuff. Again thank you and I look forward to more videos. God Bless
