If you ask, sometimes they have a Travel catalog of every town. At the Rest Area, Travel center at I-10, on the Texas side, between Texas and Louisiana. Also, Louisiana travel center is very nice.

This is my town, Born and raised. Thank you all for the nice comments. Most folks here, like me, are proud natives. Originally known as the “prairie switch” because of the use of the railroad to move cattle off the lands. Nick named “Pearl-of-the-Prairie” because as the cattle drivers were pushing through at night the could se the lights of the town flickering in the distance like pearls. The sirens you heard are fairly normal. Blows once at 1pm and once at 6pm. When it blows 5 short burst like you heard, there’s been either a fire call or medical call. Sure wish you could have bumped into a local and gotten and VIP tour. Are history is rich in agriculture l, especially rice and cotton. The large grain tanks you see are know as silos. The first set is Rice Farmers CO-OP. The others across the track are 9 Point/TWI and some of those are being torn down because of safety issues. I could go on, but if you would like more info, I would be glad to share what I can.

I am so glad you are interested in the history. I was born/raised in Southern California, I moved to Tyler, Texas in 2008. I have only recently begun to learn about the early history here. Unfortunately, they are currently removing an entire block downtown, in order to build a new courthouse. The block they are removing, the oldest buildings date to the 1870's and 1880's. There were wood structures in place there, from around the 1850's. To the side and behind these oldest buildings, they also demolished the buildings that were built by African American businesspeople at the turn of the century. One of those was lovingly named 'The People's Pharmacy'. The city has the whole area fenced off. They are not allowing for any archeology to take place. Some are saying that they welcome the removal of the historic buildings, because they represent a sad era of time for so many in our once small town. I sure understand, I can see their point of view. But as someone who is now 61 yrs. old, my heart just hurts to see the complete destruction of a small, original block that was first platted in the 1840's. When it is gone, it is gone forever.

@@ThisSmallTown In some regards, yes. However, some of the farmers and ranchers who lease parcels of their lands to these outfits are having second thoughts and feel that they were duped.
