It’s a beautiful place for sure but you may enjoy Mt. Shasta city better, it’s amazing during the summertime but look out for lots of weirdos who’re into some weird cult, basically old hippies from the 60’s-70’s that moved up there. I lived in both places as a boy and left when I was 12 to move to Klamath Falls, OR. Dunsmuir will have more mild winter storms since the snow line is lower than Mt. Shasta which is around another thousand feet higher in elevation. The nearest large city is Redding which is a 45 minute drive along I-5. But make sure you have snow tires and/or a 4x4 vehicle and no, an AWD car is not a 4x4, they behave differently on ice. And if you ever venture out into the woods, make sure you have a firearm and a “3 day” emergency bag. A lot of new folks will feel brave and go explore their new surroundings and never tell anyone where they’re going then when problems hit, you’re screwed. It’s best to go with another vehicle and know basic off road driving skills and how to determine if a road can support your vehicle or not. I mention this because it happens a lot and I was on the Klamath County SAR and you’d be amazed at how people expected to be ready for a day trip into the woods in January while wearing flip flops and a sweatsuit, they usually have to walk a few hours before their cell phone will work but many don’t make it out. If you’re already well experienced then please forget what I said since you know what I’m talking about. Apologies for being so long winded.

​. That's great advice. I live in Whittier, by the hills, and people forget to take water thinking it's an easy hike. It's not a bad hike but you should always be prepared, and wear layers.
