In this 8th episode of the Exploring Lake Ontario Series, we head to shore and explore Hamilton. When we sailed into Burlington Bay we were not excited about Hamilton because it looked very industrial, but, it was a lesson in don't judge a book by its cover. Once we got out on the folding bikes were pleasantly surprised by the beauty we found. The waterfront trail is beautiful and well maintained. Hamilton is well worth the stop if you are in that area of Lake Ontario. Just try not to judge too quickly when you first cross under the Burlington Lift Bridge and see the rusty looking factories lining the shore. Once deep in the bay, there are lots of swans, birds and beauty.
If you want to know more about us, our boat, the gear we use to film and to see any of the previous episodes of Cruising Off Duty, you can find it all by going to www.CruisingOffDuty.com
Cheers and safe cruising!

My wife and I are really enjoying your channel with our own keen yearning to own a nice 40+ foot yacht and sail the big blue as we near retirement. Loving your tours of the Canadian waters as Canada is at the top of our bucket list once travel is again allowed. Thanks to you both for your excellent content and keep it coming.

Thanks Chris. Glad to showcase an area that is not covered very often. It is beautiful here but sadly it only has a 6 month sailing season. We can't wait to retire and be able to sail 12 months a year.

Those factories are Stelco and Dofasco, steel factories. My Dad worked at stelco for over 30 years until they shut down the majority of their operations there.

Ah. It does look very Mad Max Thunderdome from the water. Ha Ha. It makes sense that it is mostly steel manufacturing. Hamilton is known for its steel. As you can probably tell from the video, we did not have high hopes for beauty but we were very pleasantly surprised.

I was expecting to see more of Hamilton as it's where much of one of my favorite TV shows is filmed, Murdoch Mysteries, because of all the historical and cultural buildings that stand in for early 20th century Toronto.

Ya, well we usually only have 1 day at a city before we had to move on to the next so we barely scratch the surface. Mainly just showing people that you can anchor here and are protected and can re-provision if need be.

I know what you mean by first impressions- my first posting in Ontario was the drug section in Niagara Falls. As Hamilton came into view, I saw the flaring stacks at the plants and thought “it looks like the opening scene from Blade Runner”. I used to run prisoners to the HWDC, which, like most detention centers, is in a bad area of town. There are some nice areas of Hamilton, but wow, does that city give you a bad first impression! One area many people don’t know about are the escarpment trails behind the city - there are tons of waterfalls and some beautiful scenery. I’ve hiked the Bruce Trail completely around Hamilton down to the US border, and man, is it pretty. The beach in Burlington off Lake Ontario is a nice place to anchor - the kids can swim to the beach, and I used to swim around the boat and scrub the bottom while they played. Cheers, Lance SV Great Escape

Wow. More beauty to explore if/when we go back. I just bought an EUC (the Veteran Sherman. Look it up on youtube and you will be impressed) so if I go back I will have the power to explore far and wide without us melting in the heat trying to pedal everywhere. Gives us a whole new reason to go back and explore the places we have already been.

Love the channel. By the way the swans are Mute swans, an invasive species. I have a video of a very aggressive one on the Napanee River.

I think that dam is the entrance to Coots Paradise. I think I use to live in the Hammer. Hamilton does have a pretty decent transit system so could you have taken the HSR ( the local transit system ) . That is the hockey arena The First Ontario Center ( a regional bank in the Niagara region) The Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League play there it use to be the home of the Montreal Canadians AHL team before they moved to Bellville Ontario ( oddly both teams used the Bulldogs name ) .

Hamilton really does look interesting. You got me curious, so I went into Google earth to see where that bay bike trail went. Found some cool stuff. From the grocery you were at - just around the corner on King is a cathedral that, from the pics, would be worth a stop. Following Dundurn street North east to the bay again and you hit Dundurn Castle which really really looks worth a nice long tour of both the house and gardens. A pic showed one of the most beautiful floating staircase i've ever seen, and 2 acres of walled heirloom veg garden - heck yea! Where you turned around at the 'potential' dinghy dock, if you'd gone up the very long stairs you could have taken another bike path back to the city on the ridge top that parallels the waterfront one and it comes right along the front of Dundurn castle. on the back side of that ridge looks like some great hiking paths off Princess Point (!) leading southwest to an Aviary and to the University and all the fun restaurants in any U district. Also near that dinghy dock, it looks like you could go up a level and continue in same direction then Left to the Royal Botanical Gardens Arboretum. It seems Hamilton has much more than I ever thought! There appear to be lots of bus stops, so this may be a good city to look into short term bus passes if you want to get around. Even Princess Point has a stop - but the RBG's stop looks quite a ways off - maybe a good spot to have bikes. Thanks for showing this areas from a perspective most of us don't get a chance to see. I've driven by / thru Hamilton and never gave it a second look. Knew the Bruce skirted it, but didn't realize just how close it came or that it was actually a pretty section!

We are still going around. We will show you Niagara on the Lake (well from the water). We could not find a Marina in Niagara that would allow us to dock during COVID. We will be back next summer. Hopefully by then COVID will be over and we can get a slip in Niagara and visit the US cities along the shore.

@@Bowmans-Woods --- See if you can get a slip in Port Credit on September 9,10,11,12 in 2021 for the Southside Shuffle. The maps show this happening right beside the marina. . www.southsideshuffle.ca/schedule . .

Frugal... Those transient marina fees can be a kind of a shock. I paid for one night in a marina just to leave the boat and drop my family off at home. (3hr one way) One night marina fees is pretty good considering I spent a total of 6 weeks on Georgian Bay this past summer. Social distancing at it's best.
@Bowmans-Woods

Yes. COVID limited our ability to stay in Marinas this summer but it forced us to find places to anchor, which was a good experience.

At night you can see flames shooting up from the smoke stacks in those factories. Steel / Aluminum Foundries.

You need a new mainsail tri- radial and it will perform and go in and out nice . Your sail is stretched and will jam . I have the same boat and have done just over 8 knots with new main an kiwi prop

You are probably right. We retire in 3 years and will be getting a much better boat to live on so we don't want to throw a lot more money into a boat we won't be keeping. We just did the new Dodger/Bimini. That will probably be the last big purchase on this boat. Save our $$ for upgrades on the new boat.

Hello Craig. Just found your channel through Captain Drone. thanks for your videos they a great to watch. We are boats and looking at drones.. My question is what type of drone are you using these days on the boat and if you was going to purchase a new one today what would be your choose or would you stay with the same?... thanks love the videos.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Thanks Greg. I still fly the Mavic 2 pro. It’s not the best drone for flying from a boat because there’s not much area to grab onto for hand catching. But it’s great in every other way. If I only wanted a drone to fly from a moving boat I would get a phantom style drone.

You mentioned the folding bikes. We would like to know what brand? We are having a boat built in Washington state. Hopefully the border will open soon. Our delivery is near Christmas. Thank you Mitchell and Pilar

We just bought the bikes cheap on Amazon.ca. I think we paid under $200 Cdn each. The name is Critical Cycles. Someone said in a comment that they don't see them listed now? I haven't checked. They get the job done but are nothing super tough. So, no off roading. Good inner city commuter type bike.

Hamilton often gets a 'bad rap'; however, it is a centre of major academic, health and connecting hub for Cargo Jet operations and other transportation. Home of McMaster University, Mohawk College and Hamilton Health Sciences.

Yep. Seemed very nice. Just needed to let boaters know to give it a chance and go check it out even once they see the less than attractive factory waterfront.

Normally I'm not too pedantic, but you said this a couple of times in this video. The swans are mute swans, not trumpeter swans - European invaders, like starlings and house sparrows. They are pretty, and I don't sweat about them too much, but they don't belong here, and they do destroy shoreline. Not to be encouraged(and I know you were never encouraging them.)
