In this episode, we are taking a look inside the abandoned Faraday Building, which was formerly the Chemistry Department for the University of Manchester. The Brutalist tower contains countless labs, each from different eras, but all offering stunning decay and working electricity.

Just a point of order, the Faraday Building was part of the UMIST campus, and became part of the University of Manchester in 2004 with the merger. This building was occupied by the UMIST Chemistry Department and the Department of Instrumentation and Analytical Science. It’s former occupants are very touchy about being referred to as UoM, etc.

Once again lads you have excelled yourselves with this explore! As one of your older followers I have to say I felt right at home on those older labs which reminded me of the 60s labs at school. Some of the decay is like art work and it helps tell the story in its own way. Thanks for all your hard work and I have to say that the commitment, quality and presentation of all explores coupled with your videos, for me makes Urbandoned the leading Urbex channel.

Made me wonder what they might have learnt, discovered and created here and that somewhere in the world some people will have memories of learning something special in these labs for the first time that would have gone to inspire many careers and perhaps created something to save someone’s life for the first time because of the work they did here as their foundation.
@Urbandoned

@@Urbandoned I learned new things in that building and it changed my life and career! I was so sad seeing it decaying when it was full of life and happy people. It got creepy after Chemistry moved out and DIAS on the 3 floors at the bottom were rattling around in an empty building. At night the doors used to flap and rattle in the draughts and we thought there were intruders. I called security a few times!

Love how well preserved some of that is, people tend to shit on the 60s buildings but when it's been untouched it actually does look good! I wish buildings nowadays would have a higher priority for using natural light instead of newer buildings with tiny windows and barely any natural light.

Agreed, the brutalist style is hated, but we tend to find the interior looks a lot nicer than the facade, especially compared to modern buildings of today
@LiftFan

@@Urbandoned the facades looked good when you see them new, it’s just the mixture of those horrible UPVC windows that get fitted and the lack of exterior maintenance and cleaning that makes it look so run down these days.

One day, the way we treat 1960s building will be viewed as horrific - just as we view the way Victorian buildings were treated in the 1960s. I wish they would do HMSO in Norwich and Anglia Square, before it vanishes.

As a chemist who studied at Manchester (the new building, not this one), always interesting seeing old labs in the buildings. Stuff like how basic the emergency shower is, the absolute abundance of gas taps, all fume hoods made of wood.

Enjoyed this one as a University of Manchester physics graduate. I never went in this building, although I did have exams at some of the neighbouring UMIST buildings-UMIST joined the Victoria University of Manchester to form the University of Manchester in 2004. The Sackville Street Building is probably the most impressive building on the old UMIST campus.

I did my PhD and post doc there - PhD 1977-80 The organic chemistry research school was almost entirely organofluorine chemistry, and a lot of money was brought into the department for this, much of it by the head of department Prof Haszeldine. My research lab was F102, which, by the look of the footage was refurbished. I did my PhD under Eric Banks who was a brilliant supervisor. The large lab at the top, with fume cupboards along both sides, was the obnoxious processes lab, where reactions involving the most toxic chemicals were performed. I used it once to prepare perfluoroisobutene, a gas with a tenth of the toxicity of the nerve gas Sarin ! Had a fabulous time there and in Manchester as a whole. Sad to see the building in decay - such a waste.

The screen you asked about at 30:12 is a DEC VT340 dumb terminal. It connects to a central server using serial communications and is essentially just a text display and input unit, all processing is done on the central computer, which would be something like a VAX or DEC Alpha (or one of their many competitors) running a multi-user operating system like VMS or Unix during that time period. You could run hundreds of terminals off one computer no problem.
@ihardcas
@ihardcas Год назад
The VT340 certainly pre-dates Alpha. If you at 29:56, you'll see a computer on a shelf. That's either a PDP11/53 (or /73) or a MicroVAX II processor. That's likely what the VT340 was attached to. If it was that computer, you could maybe manage 6-12 terminals depending what was running. Not hundreds.

Hi Alistair how are you doing mate? Amazing video as always well edited with perfect background music to go with the dark scenes real shame that this large lab is no longer open from the outside it looks a lot like a block of flats or a office block they definitely have had people come into the building to take all of the valuables out of all the floors just leaving the not so valuable stuff being kept like tables and chairs hopefully this place gets replaced with something the same or better as this is a big land they could open something else on for the age of the place its expected that decaying will start to happen from all the old paint anyways i hope that your having a good day so far Alistair and keep up the great content as always on the channel 👍

The lecture theatre furniture is completely typical for builds at the end of the 1960s and early 1970s. The projector room was for a Kodak style carousel projector. I.e. No indication the place had been refurbed since it was built. I used to walk past it every day from 1972-74. The main access was from a building across the road and a bridge. The other building was demolished for the newly built graphene building and I dare say this will be taken down when the university decides it needs the space.

Cracking 'proper' 60s labs those and if cared for properly they would last almost forever as opposed to what generally replaces them which looks shiny and modern but needs a full refurb after 10 years. The main problem with buildings such as these though is the electrical supply not being able to cope with having computers everywhere and asbestos in everything that doesn't move. Sadly many Uni science departments don't have the money coming in that some engineering departments do so keep using increasingly elderly labs built in the glory days of British science.
