@@avac8751 If you're used to Celsius you know exactly where common limits are too though. For me around 0 (chances of frosted grass and freezing water are high) is very cold and around 30 is very hot, same for most people in the country. A hundred is boiling water
@komorebi sure, everyone prefers their own units. I was sjust adding that Fahrenheit is good for that. Also, wouldn't you know if your water is boiling by... the water boiling?
@@komorebi7995 I think they were more making the point that Fahrenheit slots better to a 0-100 percentage scale of outside temperatures, which is more intuitive in general to people as it's way more prevalent than the 0-30ish scale of Celsius. Similarly, Celsius is way more intuitive in a science sense (coming from an engineering major in America, I use it just as much as Fahrenheit because of labs), because water boils at 100 and freezes at 0. They're two systems for two different needs
@@user-xb5bz4fu9o I know, yeah! I was trying to make the point that that isn't reaally an advantage because Celsius feels totally intuitive if you grew up with it as well. (Also, if water boils at a 100 C and freezes at 0 C you know that everything close to these temperatures is uncomfortable in the air as well.) And Fahrenheit isn't as intuitive for other people as people that grew up with it think I'd say. For example I don't know where the cut offs are. Is 50 F the most comfortable temperature? Is 80 F still bearable? Is 10 F freezing? I feel like I didn't articulate myself well, English isn't my first language 😄
You know what I absolutely love about this man? The fact that his entire life acts like a justification of all the regrettable shopping decisions I ever make on the daily. Edit: I also love the fact that he went to a writing school. The day he releases hi first novel, i am going to make a video that says "Ranking Books by RU-vidrs" and put this person on SSS Tier. Man I really do stan this person.
I read Lie with Me a few years ago and it’s so beautiful! It definitely seems like something up your alley! Fun fact, it’s translated by Molly Ringwald. Like *the* Molly Ringwald from the Breakfast Club 😮
on the reading books in french front: ereaders are your friend! I read in Spanish and German occasionally and can only do that because of my reader because the built in dictionaries allow me to tap a work and look it up without losing my flow like googling it on my phone did
I've been learning Swedish and just got myself a basic Kindle, and I can't believe how convenient it is to look up words. I have some paper books in Swedish that I'll be moving on to, but for now my eReader is the best.
Just something I've noticed! In last two videos that you went to a few bookstores, I saw the exact same book, one from an author that is ABSOLUTELY genius and amazing, her being Clarice Lispector, an absolute MUST when it comes to brilliant Brazilian literature. You should definitely check it out! I recommend you starting with "the hour of the star" or even her first published book "Near to the wild heart". Now, I know from experience that, usually, translated books are a whole thing BUT, either way, I guarantee you'll feel everything that she makes us all feel when reading her masterpieces.
I related so much to putting off a book you "know" you will love. I have a bad habit of doing this. Especially with the final books in a series cause I don't want it to end!
A useful trick with Fahrenheit is to think about it as a percentage of heat. So like 80 degrees F would be 80% hot, which is pretty hot. On the other hand, 30 degrees (30% hot) is pretty cold!
Love watching these types of vlogs and seeing what books you got. I’ve noticed my taste in books have changed a lot ever since I started watching your videos. It’s a good thing though because I trust your recommendations and have read so many great books I never would have even thought to get and read so thank you Jack.
I’m so happy you picked up Lie With Me - it’s honestly such a beautiful, emotional, heart wrenching and warming book with every sentence holding immense meaning. Truly an exceptional work so I hope you enjoy reading it Jack. And remember to have a pencil (and tissue) at the ready cause you’ll be underlining practically the whole book 📕
I love shopping at independent bookstores so much more than going to barnes and noble. I just feel like they focus more on really good books than popular ones if that makes any sense. I’m a fifteen year old girl obsessed with literature and works of fiction. I hate romance books, and it seems like every time I go into a barnes and noble I feel like I’m hit in the face with them. I went into a few independent book stores over the summer and found incredible books I would have never found in barnes. Anyway I love independent book stores and there are my favorite videos Jack makes
Thanks for introducing Albertine! I never realized there was a French bookstore here in NYC that both sells books in French and French books translated into English. Definitely have to check that out one day!
Jack: "I've lived here for 3 months now and I still cannot wrap my mind around Fahrenheit". Me: "I've lived here for 9 years now and I still cannot wrap my mind around Fahrenheit". Celsius makes so much more sense (as does the Metric system). ❄
Lie with me is amazing. It’s part of a triptyque (along with Un certain Paul Darrigrand et Diner a Montréal, don’t know if they have been translated) that centers around the author’s relationships that have shaped basically everything in his work.
I just finished If We Were Villains, I really enjoyed it! The epilogue really hit me in the face, I’m so excited to see what you think of it! Also let me know how Bonjour Tristesse is, I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy for such a long time (7 years to be exact) but I can’t seem to find one anywhere lol
I read Lie With Me (Arrête avec tes mensonges) was one of the first novels I ever read in French, and I think it’d be a good level for you (if I understand your french level correctly) because it’s super modern with concepts we can understand easily. Also, there’s this book Fado by Kettly Mars, a Haitian author, that I recently read in my college French class and I LOVED it!! I don’t often connect to French books, but I loved Fado and the Haitian feeling it gave.
I have been trying to remember to title of The Book Haters Book Club for WEEKS because we had it at the bookstore where I work but it got taken off the display table and I haven’t been able to find it anywhere or remember any identifying info except vaguely what the cover looked like. Thank you so much for featuring it in your montage, you’re a lifesaver, I had given up hope
Omg I live just around the corner from Albertine!! It looks gorgeous, definitely gonna go there today. Shakespeare and Co and the Gong Cha next door to it are my go tos, and enjoy If We We’re Villains I’m reading that right now and it’s finally starting to pick up
enjoyed this!! thanks for getting me to add another song to my playlist. also, as an american, i also haven't really wrapped by head around fahrenheit intellectually... just my mind/body is used to it (like "oh it feels like 80 degrees")..but celsius makes more SENSE.
There's another great small bookstore on the Upper East Side called the Corner Bookstore. It's a few blocks down from me and it's a neighborhood favorite!
ariel and rayleen from books unbound call that 'i wanna read it so much i almost dont want to" a mashed potato book. like, if nashed potato is ur fave food, you save it to be the last bite of the meal. but sometimes if u hold it too far its not gonna be as warm and nice as if u'd eaten it right away, so you can't hold it back too long. I hope you enjoyed the book and that mash potato didnt go cold!!
Hey Jack love these videos! Thankyou for making this a safe space for us book lovers. Anyhoo, I was watching Gilmore Girls and was hoping you'd cover more books from there. Any plans on reading books by lorelai Gilmore real self? I've heard it's good but would love to know your review
Heyy Jack, I've got a book recommendation for you! It might be a bit of a curveball, but I'm curious what you'd think about 'Dorian: An Imitation' by Will Self. It is a modern reinterpretation of The Picture of Dorian Gray and we studied it in my Neo-Victorian lit class. Opinion in my class was Wildely (😉) divided, but I personally really enjoyed it. It is gritty, brutal and shocking but, in my opinion, very well done (especially the epilogue! which is interesting to analyse with a copy of Oscar Wilde's 'The Preface' from the original in hand).
Listen Jack!!!! If you happen to like Bonjour Tristesse (a book Françoise Sagan wrote when she was only 17) and you like sad stories, I would highly recommend "Aimez-vous Brahms?" It's a short novel but with a bitter ending (And I seem to remember that a K-Drama is titled the same because of the book).
Can’t wait for your opinion on If we were villains. I started it in October and it took me so so so long to get trough. Actually I was on 65% today and finished it while listening to the audio book. It was so boring 😭
Have you ever thought of starting (or do you already have) an in person book club? I live in NYC myself and I have been dying to get more people together to start one.
