Hi T. That brackish water holds a lot of different species and surprises. Sorry you didn't get a Tarpon but it was a new adventure. We use Berkley 4" white Gulp swimming mullets up here for flounder. I change the Gulp every 15 minutes for a fresh Gulp and put the used one back in the container to recharge. Good luck, Mickey

It really is. It's a no wake river, so it's VERY safe for us yakkers. After fishing, I drove a few miles north, to the primitive launch. Got to talking with a lady that was fishing off the dock and she invited me to use some of her live mullet. So we free-lined and saw dozens of big Tarpon rolling. No hits but they were all over that part of the river. I'll launch there next time.

A good artificial bait to use is a Spook Jr. or a Super Spook, I caught a lot of good Snook, trout and redfish on that bait. If a big snook hits that topwater bait get ready to call 911 so they can look for your arm in the mangroves because they absolutely annihilate it.
@OldLadyAngler
@OldLadyAngler 4 года назад
That's what I was using in the early morning hours. You can hear it in the beginning of my video. It was the white with chartreuse head. That's my FAVORITE trout / red fish catcher. I've caught many of those on top water but never caught a Snook on top water. Thanks for watching.

Great video OLA, your best bet is to freeliine live mullet for tarpon/snook. I have a lot of luck on a mirrolure 19MR twitch bait along the mangroves. Tight lines!
@OldLadyAngler
@OldLadyAngler 4 года назад
Free line is last resort.... which I would have tried if I had caught some live bait! I actually did throw a Yozuri Twitchbait along the mangroves. No luck. I hit the jackpot with that same twitchbait when I fished over on the Gulf side a few years ago.

@OldLadyAngler
@OldLadyAngler 4 года назад
I'm trying to get a Tarpon on artificial. But I actually free-lined a live baitfish after this video. I drove a few miles north to scope another launch site and I got to talking to a lady that was fishing off the dock there. There were a lot more rolling tarpon up in that section of the river, so I'll launch from that area next time.
@FitzYakin
@FitzYakin 4 года назад
Didn't get your target species but still a cool day of catching 3 different species. I thought you had something huge on with that catfish; he was ripping the drag pretty good. Was that a flying Asian carp that jumped out of the water from one side of the river to the other? Have to name that snook, Snooki because he was so cute 😂. Couldn't keep those cichlids off but they look like a fun fish to catch and they are beautiful. So does that river run into the ocean Tracy? I always thought Tarpon were ocean dwelling only.
@OldLadyAngler
@OldLadyAngler 4 года назад
@FitzYakin that was a mullet jumping. Probably getting chased by a predator fish. Snooki .... hahahaha. I like it. The Sebastian River dumps out into the Indian River, which in turn, dumps into the Atlantic via Sebastian Inlet. It's not far from the ocean. From the exit of the river, it's a straight 3 mile swim out into the ocean. I thought Tarpon were strictly salt water too, but I've learned that there are freshwater Tarpon all over the east coast too. They're called Blackwater Tarpon. Landlocked due to spillways / dams etc. being constructed and trapping them. They've adapted. They look just like their salty cousins except they're more of a pewter shiny color instead of the bright silver.
@FitzYakin

Hi OLA. You’re a gutsy girl trying to hook a Tarpon from that tiny kayak. Although, I would love to see that in one of your videos. Aren’t you afraid of running into wildlife while launching in such darkness? I’m scared for you.
@OldLadyAngler
@OldLadyAngler 4 года назад
This river mainly has juvenile Tarpon.... the biggest are about 50-60 pounds but the majority are 5-10. That's why I'm fishing this area. I definitely DON'T want a huge Tarpon. It'd just break my line because I don't have big tackle. I do a really good look over of my launch area BEFORE I even get my kayak out of the truck. I look for wildlife and sketchy humans. I had plenty of light on the area. And yes, it can be scary. I'm armed and I'm very aware of my surroundings.
