one of the things that makes premodern so interesting and so unlike every other format of magic is the fact that mishra's factory is actually the best creature in the format.
I realy got a softspot in my heart for decks like Dead Guy and Machine Head. This decks have been some of the major players when I started Magic back in the days. Btw I followed your recommendation and started playin and buyin the BW Control Deck. Super fun deckto play and in my opinion it's the secret tier 1 deck of the format none is talking about. I plan to play it in august in a bigger premodern event in southwest germany this year. Thx for the content.
Yeah, those black midrange decks really have something to them that makes them so irresistible. Apparently BW Control is the 5th deck putting the most top 8s in events over the past 3 years, which surprised me! Seems like the deck has established itself as a super solid archetype, and quite certainly the best budget deck in the entire format.
Maybe Cabal Interrogator could go into the Burning Wish slots? Helps get cards out of their hand to trigger Muse and gives you another creature to sac to Therapy.
Great video as always. I love this deck, I just bought playsets of lavaborn muse in paper a few months ago. Personally I like dark ritual into hippie or phyrexian arena. I do think dystopia is a must play in the Sb as well.
Dystopia was in the list I first put together, but ended up getting cut, just like Pyroblast did. That's why I think that Burning Wish is not worth it: the cost of missing out on sb cards is too high for a deck like this.
Unfortunately I don't think I'll do that cause I think Rifter is simply a strictly worse version of BW Control: they do the same thing and have the same advantages and weaknesses, but Rifter has no way to interact nor race combo decks which BW can do.
@@micheleb.00 You Duress and Verdict them, or interact with their creatures if they're creature combo. Rifter simply cannot race combo decks, its clock is extremely anemic (you can win on turn 6if I'm being generous, maybe?). In that case the only way to beat them is by disrupting them, which BW is significantly better suited to do.
Great content as always man! Have you thought about bottomless pit in the wish slot? It's playing into lava man a bit, Might make muse more consistent and with skeletal scrying you can then reload easily. Also felt a bit like wish was a stupor for 5cc most of the time.
Wish was terrible, if I were to play this deck again I'd start by cutting them for something else. I would like for those cards to be something that can end the game, which Pit cannot really do. Also I am not a fan of having targets for Disenchant effects.
In the vein of 4 mana 6 damage per turn threats, I wonder if Grinning Demon could be pseudo additional copies of Lavaborn Muse? The life loss isn't great I guess alongside scrying . . .
Volcanic Hammer could be a good SB card for Burning Wish to have that decisive reach you need to close out games. I don't like the burning wish strategy in general, though. I think card advantage is very important, or at least some kind of recursive effect. I would put another Skeletal Scrying in the list for sure.
I don't think Volc Hammer is worth the spot since every Wish target in the board is already taking the place of a really impactful sb card. I'm already not playing Pyroblasts, which would have come in quite handy in this league! I do agree that Wish is unfortunately not where it's at. I'll continue searching to see what else I can find.
I don't think I'd want the Rack cause the chances that it does nothing are a bit too high for my taste, but I agree that Burning Wish is not where it's at and I'd like to try something else.
Maybe bottomless pit would work with rack. Like 2 rack 1 pit. Dont even have to go too deep. Id want 4 hypnotic spec and 3 blazing spec since i love that card
@@suntzu6122 I don't think that's where I would want to go, but if you love those cards then go nuts! I wouldn't play Rack without Hippie or Specter, fwiw.
The lack of playable black life gain has been frustrating me as I build my cube too. Vicious hunger is not good enough and corrupt/drain life are just too restricting
Because I had to make room for the Wishboard, which if you watch the video you will realize that I established multiple times was an idea that did not work out 😅
There's very few targets for Unearth, and if you are ever cycling it then that's a pretty bad deal. I would want another threat that has the capability of actually winning the game.
Maybe I had 1 too many Duress, but not by that much honestly. Real sb cards like blasts got cut to make room for Wish targets, which did not end up paying off.
Even though the effect of "thinning" is pretty negligible, in this case I have no idea what I was thinking (or maybe I wasn't and I was just auto-piloting). There's no reason to fetch there, it's just a mistake.
@@fpawluszmtg maybe in a deck made for them was my idea. My initial feeling is lavaborn might be too clunky at 4 mana. But man do i love this format. Even being able to consider such cards is great since they are pretty fair cards all around.
@@suntzu6122 Muse is fantastic imo, 6 damage a turn is a huge amount for a single card, and 3/3 is a pretty great body size in the context of the format.
