Guarma is perhaps the game's BIGGEST sticking point of wasted potential, it could've been RDR2's Mexico. It was supposed to be a fleshed out chapter on a huge island with lots of unique content including; treasure, outfits, side missions, flora and fauna a VOLCANO and most importantly, a longer storyline with new characters. *Example:* the woman on the mission photo with Arthur and Bill wasn't Mary, but a character called Leon's Niece in the files. Leon already being one of the people that you save from hanging in the mission "Savagery Unleashed".
The part that gets me is that there isn’t much exploring potential as is. The explanation for the story as it is makes sense, stay close to camp and avoid the guards. However, if you attempt exploration of any kind, guards begin spawning no matter where you are or if you had been spotted. That alone makes me rush through that portion of the story every time. No reason to hang around whatsoever.
Finding out about Arthur's son in the talk with the Wapiti chief was a brilliant moment. I'm glad they went with that instead of a more conventional tragedy.
Imagine if somehow Arthur's son has been alive this whole time and features in RDR3. Jack Marston vs Arthur's son in a duel to mark the death of the Wild West.
@@jimbo_1312 Same! I wish we saw him do more in the story, perhaps act as our lead in the O'Driscoll rivalry storyline and get a happy ending with Mary-Beth at the end.
There's also a cut companion system where you could take the gang members with you anywhere. There is also cut dialogue of if you take John with you to rob a bank or go to the saloon, he said "I'm getting tired Morgan, I'm going to head back."
As amazing and wonderful as this game is, the fact that there is no DLC is heartbreaking. They could have used all these cuts and areas as DLC, but their cash cow GTA has sunk as that.
The two things I'm most sad about are Guarma and Mexico. As weird as Mexico was in the first game, I like that it showed a part of the wild west that was outside of America but still felt western. I wish we had it again, so we could see more of that. Guarma shows a very forgotten part of history, at least in the US. It shows how bad slavery was in other parts of the Americas. It could have also been cool for pirate reasons.
@@weed3728 and tbh. I'M not much of a fan of having supernatural/Alien stuff in the main game. Would've prefered it to be saved for a Undead Nightmare 2 thing. Sometimes, I think that they originally wanted to do UN2, but then that got shafted and they still wanted to add the Weird stuff and just dunked it into the main game.
I'd EASILY pay $60 for an Undead Nightmare 2, SO FUCKING MUCH POTENTIAL!, if they did make one, i'd hope that they would let Arthur rest in peace and not resurrect him, or worse, have the story of UDN2 be about putting all the deceased members of the gang back to rest.

The cold open worked great with Davey’s death rather than issac’s. Instead of setting an untrue very dark tone right at the beginning of the game, they set up the gangs desperation , and their fight for survival. It also allowed for the player to keep digging into Arthur’s character and discover new things about him that explain his actions

It feels like stepping into the end of a person's life instead of a video game protagonist. He has his own trauma that he doesn't talk about and it's not certain you'll find out about it
Rob Weithoff has said before that the house building mission used to be building the entire farm plank by plank. They filmed the entire thing for mocap but testers said it was too boring doing the whole thing so it got cut right down, the extra stuff around Bleechers Hope is most likely from that mission. Good video man, love to see a part 2 if there’s enough to do one on 👍
I wanted to explore more of Guarma. On my first play through I had explored just about every corner of the map and done tons of side activities, so I was so excited to explore a whole new location. I was disappointed how short and restricted Guarma was.
Agreed. I would've loved to have a fleshed out chapter on Guarma where we could've utilized RDR2's survival elements to their fullest as the gang try to live and get off the island.
@@themadtitan7603 I was going to say the same thing. i think making it bit less action packed until the end of the chapter would been good. Having to really survive as just Arthur would have been fun. Also what if Could Choose a side to work with. Its something I think would have also been Cool for RDR1 Mexico.
There’s a glitch that can get u to Guarma without mods & hadnt been patched. I done it yesterday. But it’s not worth it. There’s not really anything their & 80% of it is a red zone & u get sniped anytime u get anywhere near the border of those lines.
@@John-996 Agreed. The revolution story that had us blow a battleship and take down a dictator over a weekend felt like the game jumped the shark and was very rushed. Instead of completing a set of missions, Guarma could've been about the gang robbing, pillaging and killing to get enough money and resources to leave the island alive. I also like your idea of it being like RDR1 where we get to choose who to help but still with the goal of getting out alive.
Agreed. Even with how cut down it was, Guarma is the most beautiful in-game location imo. I would've loved to explore a tropical setting like that for hours and soak in the ambience. Hopefully GTA VI has a location like Guarma if the rumors are true.
@@themadtitan7603 hopefully GTA6 has multiple islands to explore, I miss the feeling of experiencing a new section that was previously mentioned, but also nearly impossible to get to, I dig the one island in 5, but they had so much mire they could’ve worked with in San Andreas.
The Sea Monster could have been like the Giant Catfish. You can hear him but can’t see him. With all the boat wrecks it really could have been a neat side mission. Start by checking out the pirate wrecks and it leads you to a treasure chest. On your way you hear the monster and see something is near the surface. You get to the chest and realize there is a couple jewelry bags and a couple gold nuggets and ingots with a note about the strange going’s at sea. One of the famous Rockstar myths like the sewer monster, the Ratman.
There's a cut interaction between Micha and Trelawny that I really wish was in the game! Micha accuses Trelawny of being a rat or a snake and Trelawny responds by conjuring a snake under Michas hat and laughs at him, claiming that snakes like dark and empty places which has to be the sickest burn I've heard lol!
New Austin originally being intended for Arthur makes a lot of sense It explains why blackwater is half ubder construction in 1907 and changes so much in 4 years because well they just didn't change much for the 1907 section of that map It also explains why armadillo recovered as a town so quickly from the cholera outbreak And it explains the continuity error of the McFarlane ranch barn in rdr1 This is all supported by 1 the audio files 2 the dinosaur bones side mission 3 Arthur's journal 4 the fast travel 5 red dead online's new austin just being 1907 new Austin
Turning off the New Austin sniper and going into that area is one of the best things to do in a playthrough. Your comment makes me dislike how much they tried to hide the area from players and the game just killing them before you could get to New Austin proper. More than anything Rdr2 makes me dislike Rockstar even more as a developer. The game is still amazing though.
@@Agc2749cherish this game my friend. I truly believe rockstar will NEVER make something like this ever again after they saw how one (pretty fucking boring) game could carry them for an entire decade.
@Rowley Ryan My first playthrough was when the plandemic lockdowns started so I had nearly 2 months of unrestricted time to play this game nice and slow. Getting the Legend of the east Sachel is still one of my favorite items to grind for. One thing I’ve noticed is that in the mission where you rescue John off of the mountain, in chapter one, he has a Mauser pistol and wooden shoulder stock holster. This makes me wonder if having stocked pistols could have been a thing in game at some point in development.
Was severely disappointed when you couldn't shorten the stock on the repeating shotgun so you could dual wield them like in MW2 and cock the lever by spinning the gun in a circle essentially
Maybe it's a slight nod to Red Dead 1 where Dutch was the only character seen duel wielding pistols. Now in Red Dead 2 John is the only one wielding a Mauser with a stock

I would have liked to be able to visit New Austin or even Mexico with Arthur. It feels weird to explore NA as John given that a lot of the RDR1 dialogue indicates he's never been before - pretty weird going to MacFarlane's ranch for example!
That’s what ticks me off a lot about R*. I can understand making the city of Blackwater inaccessible to Arthur (even though he didn’t partake in the Ferry heist but whatever) but to have the ENTIRETY of New Austin off limits to him is just plain dumb
@@Swordsoulreaver Blackwater isn’t in New Austin, it’s in West Elizabeth, which Arthur can partially explore. Fun fact: Otis Miller's revolver, which is supposed to only be accessible as John due to it being in New Austin, has an icon that shows a short barrel vs. its final model in game, which has thr longer barrel.

Guarma is my least favourite part of the game. I always try to put off doing the bank job for as long as possible so I don’t have to do the Guarma mission. It’s a shame a lot of stuff for it was cut - it definitely would have been more enjoyable!
I think another reason why I didn’t care for Guarma was mostly because I was separated from everyone. Not a bad mission of course but there are much more interesting ones to me.
Same here. When i get to Guarma, the trainer comes out. I didn't do that the first time but immediately after i was like yep, I'm cheating to get through it as quickly as possible. It's genuinely a horrible experience. That's kind of the point of it though, and they nail that perfectly.
just adding it here that theres much more than what youve gone over, theres a Cut companion system where you can take gang members out with you, theres at least 663 cut pieces of ambient dialogue for various things including the companion system, John marston has a well of cut content, theres a character called Abe Maclean in the files who needs a custom entry in the metapeds file and on top of that arthur has a bunch of cut outfits

@@Sledge447It’s sad because you can go out of map and Ambarino by far has the most explorable out of boundary map geometry in the entire fucking game. You can tell they had so much more going on there at one point and it sucks ass
Yeah, there's a fuckton of content actually in the game, but the priorities Rockstar had while making the game are definitely questionable -- why is there a whole island that's barely utilized and most players cite as the low point of the game, yet areas on the main map are unfinished? It would have been far wiser to simply cut Guarma out of development and put that labor onto the parts of the main map that ended up not getting finished.
I love this game to death but for some reason I can't help but feel like there's a bunch missing from the main story. You can definitely tell that they had a much larger story to tell.
Tbh I feel like they should have just scrapped Guarma entirely. It could have been a cool location if they’d been able to fully flesh it out, but after having so much of the content cut, it just feels so out of place against the larger storyline.

Any other company would love to be the owners of a game as good as RDR2, but rockstar just spits in the face of all their fans and just left this game in the dust
I'm planning to buy Rockstar sometime in the future when I'm done with all my projects on my companies lol. Would love to revamp everything to perfection.
I wished I had explored Guarma more than I did when I was given the opportunity, that opportunity occurring only once after Welcome To The New World before you meet up with Dutch in the cave. The environment was so amazing; especially compared to other open world game environments I've played through. The reason I decided to head to the next objective after so little time spent exploring Guarma was mostly due to the fact that there were guards just about everywhere, and I was already pretty invested into the story anyway. Little did I know, that very moment was the only opportunity to explore it. I wish I had saved on a separate file without overwriting it with any new saves from further in the story, and instead saving it on a different file so I could come back to it every once and a while, and in fact, I wish I had done that for a lot of other points in the story, too. I miss playing through RDR2's story missions in general.
There really isn't much to explore, you can only access a stretch of the river beneath the waterfall you and Dutch meet at down to well before it floats out to see, and a bit of the sloping terrain between your camp and that river. If you go north of the camp you just slide back down or fall, and if you go in any other direction you will be quickly overwhelmed with soldiers. There are I believe two random events that can happen though I've only ever seen the one where you fall into a pit trap and are ambushed by soldiers for a few minutes, and then there are the handful of unique animals the majority of which all gather at the base of the waterfall aside from the snakes which depending on what you do may never spawn at all because time will stop moving until you initiate the Dutch mission. All of the other locations you get to visit are during the story missions and you will quickly fail if you get too far afield. As fond as I am of the Guarma chapter I do acknowledge that it is ultimately disappointing knowing what was evidently originally planned for it to be far bigger and offering much more content and free roaming. Other than taking a bit of time to walk around a very small and artificially constrained bit of terrain in order to take in the gorgeous artistry of the flora and fauna native to the island, there is almost no reason to not just go ahead and proceed through the main missions, an approach that is antithetical to the design philosophy of practically the entirety of the rest of the game.
@@merrylakay8310 First of all, there is an invisible sniper that will kill you as soon as they can when you teleport there, and second of all, I use console.
to the point about Eliza, it was mentioned in the game that Eliza was the mother of Arthur's son who was killed. I imagine the plan was initially to keep that in the game, but then they decided to have it mentioned instead of take place
i would really love to see a director's cut for this game that adds in some of the cut content cause its safe to say that alot of players stay in chapter 2 just to keep playing as Arthur and really want to play as Arthur in new austin its such a let down that some of these things got cut
I always felt RDR2 felt a bit 'unfinished' (if that's the right way to put it) towards the latter part of the game. Would have loved to go back to Guarma , and find the Princess
You're bugging... The game felt more than complete, they're eyes were just bigger than their stomachs. Added too much to reasonable achieve in a deadline but they got an immense amount done and it is the best open world game I've ever played and I've played
I think that the Laramie Gang was supposed to be in Emerald Ranch and would tie in with the whole Emerald Ranch mystery. The description for Emerald Ranch mentions that the owner is trying to force out smaller ranchers (similar to Hanging Dog and Mr Geddes) but we never see much evidence of this in game. We probably would've seen a sort of Johnson County War or Pleasant Valley War in ch 2 or ch 3, but this probably got cut up into the Braithwaite-Grey Feud and the Hanging Dog-Pronghorn Ranch feud. This would have probably tied in more with the Emerald Ranch mystery with the Ranch owner's daughter probably falling in love with his rival's son and having Seamus kill him (again like the Braithwaite's and Grays). Personally, I think this would have been really cool to see and would have captured that "Wild West" feel imo.
Rdr2 is such a great game even the concept art gives me chills how badass and scary the west was. One second it was all quiet with the birds and the insects chirping And then hundreds of men with cannons were fighting
8:08 I know that's a small detail but coming from the irl heartlands that makes a lot of sense. A lot of wild grass here on the prairie especially back then would have been a tan color, it's often called buffalo grass. When I go through the Heartlands countryside I liked how it did reminds me of my home but I couldn't help but notice how strangely lush it looked
Fully agreed on the guarma thing with most of the comments. Definitely feels under utilized. But i guess with the way they told the story on the chapter they didn't wanna dwell on it. Definitely feels like one of those things that could have been explored had we got DLC like some of the other storylines that didn't get explored. But u don't say all that to be disappointed coz this is the best open world game I've ever played, there's genuinely so much content its hard to ask for more. Great coverage as always 👊🏿
The weirdest thing is the way people act like the game is somehow "incomplete" if it has cut content (it's like they don't realise that _every_ collaborative creative work has cut "content"), or that the game would 100% guaranteed be superior with the cut content "restored". It doesn't seem to occur to them that some content is cut simply because it's _bad_ - or because it bloated an already-massive game, which IMHO was probably a common cause of cut content in RDR2 specifically.
The Mexico set being so complete, and the fact a younger version of Seth makes me somewhat wonder if they were hoping to be able to attach rdr1 to the rdr2 world. Though when my husband was playing the guarma chapter, he really wanted to explore the island. It would have been nice if they had a way of returning to it or opening it up. Wish they hadn't cut that part. The set was beautiful and would have been awesome to explore. (I was the explorer/hunter of the two of us, and he used to have me do all his hunting and gathering, since he had little interest in that part)
I highly doubt they had plans to remake RDR1 in RDR2. It would have required a lot of development resources and the team needed to move on to GTA 6's development.
@@zaidabraham7310 would it have been that hard? they already remade West Elizabeth and New Austin. Even Mexico is half-there, places like El Presidio even have some glitched walls. They could have just brought over the audio and animations and cutscenes, couldn't they?
It would have been so awesome if Guarma was longer. Aguasdulces and the rest of Guarma should have been explorable. There could have been a heist to get money to escape, there would be new characters that help the gang escape, a ton of side missions to keep the player busy. Maybe even a legendary animal that can only be found on Guarma like an iguana. There could have been new gang members, some exlusive weapons. I could go on all day of stuff that could have been added to Guarma.
Its so interesting to see all of this Guarma always felt rushed and off place I guess Eliza was in their gang at first but they later decided to make her character completely different and death along with his son by bandits i think that kinda works better for Arthur's character

A prologue in Blackwater was never planned. Guarma, on the contrary, was smaller, and therefore could be fully explored. Don't know much about venomous spiders. "Saints Denis Cemetry Ghost" is just an old woman in the first Bronte mission that is in the game, but she used to have her own scenario in the mission.
A few more characters not in the video, the giant has some texture/model pieces and franks monster(aka manbearpig) has a almost complete model. Also a few files for a ped called exvictim, which appears to have a heavily mauled face.
As a game completionist, it took my 3rd play through to discover, through frustration and RU-vid, that to complete the compendium of animals, 3 different snakes spawn in ONE spot on Guarma. So, if you miss it and don't load up your save file before doing the 2nd(last) mission, you'll Never get the chance again... That was just dumb. Luckily, I discovered a glitch in the mission to rescue Javier that allowed to study the rare Sea Tortoise.
I was almost certain Rockstar were withholding Mexico for use in a major RDO update. Although I was still unrealistically hoping it was for a singleplayer story DLC. I guess Strauss Zelnick never figured out a way to endlessly bug players to buy gold bars to the same degree he can annoy you to buy Shark Cards in GTAO. Hence RDO's neglect.
the constant nagging of all the shopkeepers to buy gold for everything, combined with the repetitive timesink broken missions, made me stop playing RDO after like 2 hours. Gta 6 Online will be worse.

I’m glad the guarma section in story mode is kind of short, since the story mode is already insanely long. But I do wish we were able to go back and visit it in the epilogue during free room just so that players could finally explore something other than the little waterfall area that we’re limited to now.
I find it interesting the audio for the monster includes what sounds like a boat horn right in the middle of it. Wonder if there was something between Guarma and America they were planning on using.
One of the things that fascinates me the most (which I haven’t seen a lot of discussion about) is that within the game files, Arthur is referred to as Player_0. John, however, is referred to as Player_3. Nothing spawns when switching to Player_1 or Player_2 in the debug menus I believe, but at some point, there were meant to be other playable characters BEFORE giving John the reigns. Either that, or having John be a playable character was slapped on late in development.
@@veasey3997 I wonder if there’s a way to confirm this, because if that’s the case, it kind of suggests that John being playable was tacked on late in production

It always bugged me that there was open world content locked until the epilogue. It should have all been accessible as Arthur. Here’s how you do it… Arthur lives after the showdown at Beaver Hollow. He helps John escape but goes back for the money, only to see Micah scurrying off with it, and Micah yells that he’s gonna go for the Blackwater money too. So then Arthur decides to move to a warmer climate to help his TB (new Austin) and does some missions to find out where Micah is at so he can ambush him when Micah goes for the Blackwater money, which Arthur intends to give to the Marstons. But maybe he succumbs to his TB before he can execute the ambush, or there’s a showdown with him and Micah or Dutch, or whatever. Then we pick up with the epilogue as it is in-game.
yeah that’s definitely asking for a lot, although it would be cool. maybe they could add the cut content to a new game, if they were to make another redemption then that’ll be awesome.
glad to see such a good video on this topic! i remember spending hours on RDO exploring the top of the map (which looks amazing and i wish they let us go up there it'd be nice to have the open nature they have there with no buildings) along with mexico, so many interesting bits of land so far out of player view that feel like they could be in the main game
I’m thinking, during the gang’s escape from Guarma, Micah asks Dutch should they go to Blackwater and retrieve the money. Dutch says no, but due to the dialogue for Arthur it got me thinking. Maybe, just maybe, Dutch would’ve allowed Arthur and the rest of the gang to go to Blackwater and the rest of New Austin. It would have had it’s own chapter, the real Chapter 6. The vanilla C6 would be called Chapter 7.
I think that Sheriff's dialogues were there to actually stop Arthur exploring the regions. He could gallop through the areas, but as soon as he slows down, the cut-scene with a local Sheriff would play followed by the "Game Over" variant. But they have decided to simplify it and introduced the mysterious sniper as it would cause less "glitches" by reducing the ability to travel with unwanted character even more.
Exacly, good point, I don't think rockstar ever inteded at any point during the making of the game, arthur going south. It was never on their plans sinse the begining of the gane
@@themanwithnoname4385 I believe there are also audio files of Arthur asking for the stagecoach to take him to Armadillo/Tumbleweed/Macfarlanes Ranch as well. So I definitely think at one point he was supposed to be able to go there
It's rare to find a new channel that you love. I'm binging your past work, currently on my third video, and you've got quite a lot. I'm really glad I found this channel.
For guards I would put At Saint Denis/Blackwater you can buy a boat ticket to guarma 20-50$ Spawn at a dock there and there’s a saloon, gunsmith etc You can also go to the place where javier was held but obviously you would be shot at. Also you can find secret treasure and see some events And make the unexploreable area of guarma acsessible
The sea creature sounds amazing and a mission like that could've been awesome, Eliza sounds that likes/hates Arthur and John which makes me curious... FUN FACT: Molly was suppose to be on Angelo Bronte's party with Dutch since in the files you can find her model with a beautiful green dress
I absolutely adore jungles and rainforests, and man I was stunned when I got to Guarma, Rockstar outdid themselves but when I found out that it was supposed to be a massive explorable Island, I was incredibly disappointed that Rockstar cut it from the game
Just started a new play through a week or so ago to try for 100% and have already found a couple of things I’ve never encountered previously, such a masterpiece
You should definitely do a video about the cut content of RDR1. Fun fact Jack (when he’s 16) actually has a texture for his bandana that he wears in 1914 that goes unused
While it can be frustrating to think about things that could have been, it's worth remembering that the mentality of just adding anything and everything is exactly how many games get stuck in development hell.
The river monster audio has to be my favorite. I wonder what it wouldve looked like? Do you think it would be a giant mutant gator, or somthing more serpentine?
If I remember correctly, Rockstar added the river monster in a GTA V Online dlc as an easter egg (Sorry if I've made mistakes, english is not my mother tongue)
@@therwtyt I was disappointed and angry when I learned this. it's such a shame that this creature that could have been such a cool and terrifying encounter was turned into a background Easter egg that does absolutely nothing...
17:10 To me, this seems like Rockstar was planning on having a side mission reference Team Fortress 2. The fact that the location has two brothers, one in a red house and another in a blue one, engaged in a feud just screams TF2.
