Exploring Roar - The history of the most dangerous movie ever made 

The cognitive dissonance between the moviemaker's message of preserving lions in the wild while simultaneously treating them like pets and needlessly endangering the lions, the crew, and his own family. While I can appreciate the passion this movie should be a warning, not something to admired.

Saw this in a packed theatre at a 24-hour B-movie festival in 2015 and it was fucking nuts. Nobody was prepared for it, least of all me. Once it became clear that they had no control over the animals and nobody was actually "acting" the theater was a screamfest every time the lions tackled someone or gnawed on Noel's head. Once it was over and the next movie started and the MGM lion popped up everyone screamed at that too! The greatest movie theater experience I've ever had.

I feel like you said "but then things got worse" at least three times and I couldn't believe it. Incredible nobody got killed and it was actually finished.

This is terrifying, just another reminder why exotic animal laws exist.

If you've ever heard a lion roar in person, it's loud and terrifying. That scene at the end when those lions were fighting above them on the stairs was chilling and could have turned lethal.

The whole production from the get go was founded on utter lunacy. The saying "they don't make 'em like they used to" has never been so appropriate.

Melanie Griffith grew up with lions and tigers. They should make a movie about that. Also: That brother's reaction is absolutely priceless.

Unique movie yes, but also borderline suicidal. Anybody with with half a brain knows dealing with that many big cats you know people are going to get hurt. They were lucky not to have manslaughter charges over them. Passion is good, but passion over your loved ones safety is wrons.

I have seen *Born Free* - Which is about a couple who adopt ONE lion cub ( 'Elsa' ) and it's a lovely, moving story, about personal commitment to nature, and finding your own truth by doing so... But, THIS movie *Roar* should have been renamed *Born Stupid*

Jay-zus wept!! These people literally stared almost every kind of disaster right in the eye and were like "You know what, fuuuuuck you! We're still doing this.".

I've seen a documentary of this film but you went deeper. Well done. This film was an insane idea.

Just watching this exploring video made me so uncomfortable and itchy and anxious! The fact that they involved their children should be cause for removal of the kids from the home!! Such a crazy, reckless and damned dangerous thing to do for years and years and years... no respect for these animals that are used to VAST ranges of space to move around in!! Instead they have massive cats cooped up in that stupid wooden house. What utter suicidal lunacy. And the poor kids!

And Tippi Hedren said Alfred Hitchcock was a nightmare to work with!

This is the Jumanji remake we deserved.

Another film that would never be made in this day age. I'm all in favour of people being free to act as they please but this needed to be stopped by someone in charge. It's crazy!

Absolutely amazing...I had NEVER even HEARD of this film, and learning it's story was absolutely riveting...I literally had my mouth hanging open at several points...bra-frickin'-VO, man...this was fantastic.

This is maybe the tensest movie watching experience I've ever had. I spent the entire runtime feeling that I may watch someone get eaten by a lion any second. Even watching this review freaked me out a little.

I saw this originally in the early 80s. Released in Ireland has a PG kids movie. Saturday afternoon matinee. I guess I was too young to appreciate how dangerous it was at the time.

I saw this movie in the theater when I was a kid (I live in Mexico and also, ratings for movies were rarely enforced until a few years ago) I remember that this movie scared me, I do remember many scenes but not the overall plot. In Mexico it was called "El Gran Rugido" so more or less Roar :) My family used to own a pet and exotic animals and I got to expend a lot of time (at home and at the shop) with big cats suchs as lions, tigers, cheeta, cougar, panther and the like, you can really make a bond with them but it's better never to forget that they have way more strenght than you and thicker skin so what for them is a friendly pawn or playful bite for you is a bleeding injury =) I would love to see this movie again, thanks for another awesome video!! I noticed this movie recently on Amazon. I didn't really look at it, but I had assumed it was a new production. Now I need to watch it. This was great.

First, I would like to say Cecil, great amazing job as always. You always provide insightful intriguing, and sometimes hilarious commentary to films that we either have always loved or maybe have never heard about. You are fab! The film: Maybe they started out with a noble intention, but they were still trying to profit from the animals. The fact that they allowed them to multiply and didn't provide them with the outdoor space and food they needed, shows a real dangerous precedent. Animal conservation? Give me a break. This angers me so much. They break every rule when it comes to actually caring for and raising "wild" animals. It should not be done to begin with unless they are properly educated, have the proper space and resources, and are taking in animals that would not otherwise have survived without intervention. Not for some movie project. Might as well be a circus. I don't mean to go off on a soapbox but this stuff just angers me. Not only are the animals in danger, but so many people and for what? Never turn your back on a cat. Even domestic cats still have some of this in their genes. Your kitty may do the same. Not maybe to the same result, but it is instinct. You give them the back of your neck and you are prey. That is one of two ways cats subdue their prey/food. By constantly getting bitten and bloodied, they exponentially created more bloodlust in the animals. What a bunch of a-holes. But great job by you of course. LOL

Holy crap! What a roller coaster ride for this film. Utter insanity but true devotion and commitment. As someone who has always had a love of big cats, and a staunch supporter of animal and wildlife preservation, I commend them for their efforts. Awesome episode, one of your best.

Wow the story surrounding this movie is amazing...

This was truly the craziest most dangerous thing I’ve ever seen on film. It’s amazing that multiple people weren’t mauled to death or that the animals didn’t kill each other. It’s stressful to watch too because you see people getting hurt and you’re just waiting for one to snap and the others fall suite tearing someone apart. Batshit crazy but oddly fascinating

I discovered your channel three days ago. Since then, I've watched fifty to sixty ( estimated ) different reviews / explanations. Highly enjoyed them all, and subscribed. Surely you must have attended a film school, or at the very least a script writing workshop. Your analysis is often concise and precise. Repeatedly tearing strips off the Weinstein monsters - way before the public revelations - is the cherry on top. Congratulations from Seddon, Australia.

Thank you! This was fascinating! Will have to look this up. I recall a few times in the early 80s, where I rode my motorcycle along Soledad Canyon Road, near Shambala, being surprised to see an elephant grazing in a field. I moved to the area a few years later, but never visited the compound.

"....there will never be a movie like Roar again". Never say never. There will someone that stupid to do it again. Probably with sharks. Most definitely with sharks.

Occasionally I work as a set medic, so this film is a living nightmare! If I worked that set, I'd have PTSD within the first week!

I can certainly see the appeal in lions and tiger, but I have been a cat owner for two thirds of my life and considering all the havoc my tiny farm cat can cause I can't believe they did not realise this was a disaster waiting to happen.

A movie about the making of this movie would be quite the experience

Honestly, the story behind production of "Roar" would make for a more interesting movie than the movie itself. It feels so unreal. It's luck that they managed to raise ONE lion that they could control. But several tens of big wild cats? Do these people even realize their gigantic amount of luck they had? One famous Russian family tried to do something similar and the second lion they raised already turned on them.

I got the Book 'The Cats of Shambala' from a library sale and it talks about the movie and the sanctuary. The risks they took are staggering. Turning this place into a sanctuary was a much smarter move. These animals are beautiful but should be admired at a safe distance!

I did some research on the Australian release where it was contractually obliged to release in first. My favourite quote about the movie was in an interview in a magazine "from the waist up I was Tippi Hedren, but from the waist-down I was a leopard".

5 Roars to this video!!! They showed this flick in Motelx a couple years ago to a full packed theatre audience. We had the DP of the movie giving us an introduction to contextualise which made the viewing even more scarier. Amazing film for so many reasons.

If someone HAD died while making this, it would be a notorious example of idiocy and gross negligence. It's like that fella who made the film in Savannah with a scene on a WORKING train bridge without bothering to inform railroad officials (or the Georgia Film Commission, Savannah Film Office, etc.) and a girl ended up dead. Everyone called the director a murderer and demanded he never work again. But what if he'd succeeded and got the shot he wanted? He'd be hailed for taking a risk. As a "gorilla filmmaker" and a "maverick."

I barely missed that Drafthouse re-release. There's a Drafthouse in my town but the only showtime was when I was at work. That sucked.

Not gonna lie i want to see a disaster artist, Ed wood-like movie about the behind the scenes drama of this film. It would be fucking insane!

i have this film, watched 10 minutes and thought..."is this a good bad flick" ...and sure enough. This film is a very uncomfortable view, it's like watching Free Solo, except instead of falling, I keep expecting a actor to be torn to pieces.
