quick fact, usually shells everywhere on the beach at the surf are a sign of strong rip currents, generally youll see more shells on outgoing rip currents. it drafts the shells into a column. shes right dont swim there at all. the point and around it has terrible rip currents you simply cannot over come. most fishermen fish off the beach not in the surf. be careful out there. great fishing but dangerous waters!

There's really nothing new about this "island". This site was formerly the southern point of Hatteras Island, which slowly eroded away. Recent storms and shifts in current pushed enough sand back over that shoal that it was high ground, for a little while.

It's very beautiful, but yet scary. Most Nature can give, but can also take away. I hope no one is planning to build any hotel or resort till the land is owned and is guaranteed stable

The island is gone. Swept away by a hurricane.

Please research the history of the outer banks to learn why there are thousands of ship wrecks there, it is not due to currents as stated.

I love the outer banks man so much history lol

I love how all these responses are not accurate lmao. I live here, and the shipwrecks are because sand is slowly built up and that's how they wreck. Sometimes yes it could be natural boat problems, or maybe water, but a majority are because of the sandbars.

Well said Tom! Sandbars, unpredictable weather, the most dandangerous inlets on the east coast, these are the main reasons for the name "graveyard of the Atlantic "! I know several people who have been shipwrecked at oregon inlet! " the bar" has claimed many lives over the years

Why was this news? Shoals and inlets pop up and disappear all the time.

News correspondents and anchors act as if they have never experienced the basic activities of life. It's interesting to watch a segment where they try to explain something as basic as changing a tire, and it is like the rest of the world knows nothing about it.

@gregcarver1915 you want to be stuck on a island with no way off . knock your self out . in a hurracane before it comes and the ferrys want move because of high winds and waves go for it .

I think Hurr. Florence, the year before, was Shelly Island's undoing. My friend said the temporary island was gone when she went last August, before Dorian hit.

why on earth would someone live on a random barrier island that literally formed overnight?... @4:04 I'm glad someone was smart enough to mention that! If a category 5 hurricane strikes that place will be gone! :S
