Exploring the SS United States Part Two
Welcome to Part 2 of a 4 or 5 part series on this magnificent ocean liner known as the SS United States. If you missed part one, please go watch it first!!! The sad and empty look of this once historical and well known ocean liner has been sitting in a state of decay for over 20 years. With its maiden voyage in 1952, it only lasted 17 years before airlines became the more popular way to travel overseas. However, Crystal Cruise lines might invest in this sad ocean liner and it might once sail again. Currently in Philadelphia, I walked the massive 990 foot long vessel, with permission, to give you a more in depth look of what the SS united States looks like inside. I was a 1st Class Passenger (at 10 years old) in 1969 from La Havre France to New York on what turned out to be one of her last voyages. I have very fond memories of this grand ship in her prime. I met her again in 2000 or so when the owner let me board her and take some photos and videos. She's since changed hands a couple of times but she is still beautiful... Save the S.S. United States!

This is joyous and heart-wrenching at the same time. So mush has been lost, yet hope remains. Thank you for this beautiful tribute to a wondrous ship. I am sorry to say I did not ever for a minute think that she had survived, when most every other great transatlantic liner has been scrapped out. She must be saved.

Abandoned Steve Ah, okay. Cool, glad you got to visit it, and share it! Being in there must of been one unique feeling. It's not like the usual house or factory...I would of had much different feelings going in. Really a special place to explore.

Kinda sad to see her like this btw there is a Hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico named Normandie she is a Hotel that is modeled after the real life Cruise Ship Normandie in which the owner met his wife,the hotel has been abandoned after a storm came she is in bad shape,i would love to see you visit her.

I can't believe this ship has been docked in Philadelphia for 20 years now. It's become sort of a landmark. Great video!

Steve, THANK YOU for sharing this tour with us. It's a privilege to see these parts of the ship that were rarely seen by passengers and rarely photographed or filmed. Seeing all of this, passenger and crew areas, is a privilege. So few people have access to the ship and you've taken the time show the liner even in small details. What valuable documentation you have here and it will be even more valuable if the S.S. United States is not reactivated and is scrapped or sunk.

I have a weird fear of height and water. However, i find ships very interresting. Just thinking of how deep the water can be makes me feel uneasy. I got served watching your video lol.

9:07 the door to the right allows interior access to the bottom of the Crow's nest and mast. No need to go outside. The stairs to the left go down one deck only to the officers cabins.

OMG 8:16 they have even removed the helm and steering wheel?? If they ever need to tow her now she cant be steered :((( What a stupid thing to do taking the wheel out, its like having no steering wheel in your car - that thing wont drive! 10:16 would have been a rotary selector wheel but its been nicked! As you said it would have had lamps in it indicating fire areas. Possibly the wheel could be turned to select fire suppression in whichever area was on fire?

With modern day electronics, you'd think that maybe they could utilize some cameras mounted up high with monitors in the control room, rather than building a whole new control room in a forward, elevated position.

+Jim H. They have serious plans to build unmanned cargo ships. The captain could operate the ship from a control room in some harbour. They are just not allowed to do it yet. This camera-thing would be a childs play compared to that. The rules are not up-to-date.

9:32 "the small generator room" is the elevator machinery for crew elevator #4. The room to the right was a small cabin for the port pilot.

9:01 spiral crew staircase runs to nearly the bottom of the ship allowing crew access to most decks.

It sits this high in the water because its so empty, no cargo or anything else heavy but engines. Lots of what's called reserve bouyancy.

Well you know what... The Government should pay for this ; not the donors and not special interests. It should be put back together with the technology of the time; period . Add the stealthy tech to keep things where they are yet stay within Maritime rules. This ship represents allot of history and the country. I can image the people coming out of the woodwork if you gave them the chance. The idea should at the least be floated... Should be done correctly with original equipment. The Cost comes from Greed, if some Real people stepped up to the plate it would be done tomorrow. I wish I had the Money; I would be the first to step up and get this Old Girl working again as she was... Make it So...

Steve, have you seen or heard any estimates on restoring it? I'm wondering how much just to sandblast the rust off? If sandblasting would be the media type used. Then the paint supplies and paint? Moving the bridge, are those US rules or international rules? Very expensive I would think. Thanks for the tour. Do you have vintage video of the ship in its prime?

Pointy, forward part of the ship is called the bow, aft part is the stern/fantail.

I might be wrong, but isn't that asbestos tiling still on the floor of the bridge? Aluminium floor would have fire resistant tile and 1952 build means good chance it is asbestos. The cost alone of lifting that tile outside of Bangladesh would be too much.

alibabafurball From the turn of the century on, there were lots of brand names of composite flooring surfaces that were poured in place, too. Most were cement-based, others not.

It’s sad they have to move the bridge and make it higher. Man Maritime rules suck because back then the rules were different and not sucky like now I hope they don’t change the bridge and I hope they leave the bridge where it’s at
