Tantallon Castle, Scotland - Last week I visited one of my favourite places in East Lothian - Tantallon Castle. Tantallon is located about two miles east of North Berwick and is about an hours drive away from Edinburgh. There's also a good bus service which gets you pretty close. The castle is spectacularly located on a rocky coastal headland and dates all the way back to the 14th century.

In its day, Tantallon was one of Scotland's strongest and most impressive castles, with curtain walls more than 12ft thick, which is quite amazing. It was the stronghold of one of Scotland's mightiest and most feared families, the 'Red' Douglases, Earls of Angus. It was from Tantallon that they pursued a fierce vendetta against their nearest rivals, the 'Black' Douglases - and it was also from here that they managed to withstand the might of two successive Stewart King's, James 4th and James 5th.
For 300 years Tantallon was a grand baronial residence and would have been the scene of some majestic banquets, not to mention some spectacular sieges, which it usually repelled. The castle ended its days as a fortress and residence when Oliver Cromwell, with some 3000 of his troops, damaged it beyond repair in 1651. It's thought the castle site may have been the origin of the legend of King Arthur's Camelot and it's really not difficult to see why. Mary, Queen of Scots visited the castle in November 1566 and it even has its own ghost, which has been photographed on at least two separate occasions. Tantallon eventually passed in to state care in 1924 and is now looked after by Historic Environment Scotland. The fee to get in is extremely reasonable and makes a terrific day out for the whole family, especially if you also visit the adjoining Seacliff Beach which is absolutely stunning.
