#HogbackMountain #AbandonedSkiResort #Vermont
Hogback was one of the longest lasting, classic family ski areas in the state of Vermont. Operating from 1946 until 1986, hundreds of thousands of skiers enjoyed its trails and slopes over the years. It is located approximately 16 miles west of Brattleboro, Vermont, and was easily accessed by Route 9. Several mountain faces were available for skiing, each served by their own lifts, giving the area a wide variety of ski terrain. Increasing insurance rates in combination with competition from nearby resorts led to the area closing in 1986.
The Hogback Mountain Conservation Association worked hard to purchase the land and preserve it from development. They succeeded in 2010, transferring the property with conservation easements to the Town of Marlboro. The land is now open to the public. For more information visit www.hogbackvt.org.
Today, Hogback is arguably one of the best lost ski areas in Vermont to explore. Now owned by the town of Marlboro, most of the ski lifts remain on the property, along with various buildings. Trails are semi-clear, as volunteers continue to keep some of the trails open and available to cross country skiers, backcountry skiers, hikers, and snowshoers.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may seem an eyesore to one person, just might be a beautiful masterpiece to another. There are places beloved by communities and protected in the hearts of those that hold their memories of its tattered hallways and decayed rooms dear. This is the way that we feel when we explore places that have been forgotten by time. Left to rot and decay and only holding the silent whispers of what once was. We know that there are people out there with malicious intent toward these places that we venture into. It saddens us when we see the filth and destruction they leave behind, but we want to make something very clear… We are explorers and lovers of history. We in no way, shape or form condone the criminal activities that take place in the historical decaying places that we document. Social media has brought many of these places to the limelight, but the intention is to show the beauty and mystery of abandonment. Not to invite trouble. Trouble will find its way on its own and to say that the peaceful documentation of these places leads to criminal activity, is mind blowing. We have met so many amazing fellow explorers in our travels and are so thankful and humbled by the positive responses we have received. We know that this type of exploration is not for everyone…many people don’t understand why we find such beauty in decay, we can only explain it as a beautiful journey into the past. We invite you to watch our explores and come along as we visit these amazing places. As for the criminal activity that occurs, those individuals are responsible for their own actions. It is a terrible part of our society, but reality, nonetheless. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving this location just as much as we do. We hope that through this video, the memories held within will remain.

I grew up in Marlboro, spent a lot of time on the mountain. Hogback gave the school free equipment, lessons, hot cocoa and donuts on Monday afternoons. I skied there and worked from 1961 to1977 even after the asking ended. Many fond memories.

Enjoyed many runs on Hogback in the 50's. Every Easter skiers dressed up in costumes. Dressed as the Easter bunny to the Mad Hatter. At the end of the day had sugar (boiled maple syrup) on snow.

Reliving history, walking through time as it now stands still. One can only imagine the cold winter days, hot chocolate and unbelievable snowfallen views from the tops of the mountain. Those buildings were sooo cool and the tower was incredible! I know climbing up one your heart goes pitter patter all the way up but the overlook across the forest is absolutely amazing! Thanks for bringing us on this journey ☺️🌲

I’m rewatching your videos and on this one at 28:50 where you found an empty CB walkie talkie, my late husband and I have the same exact one. 2 of them actually. They’re in a dresser draw back in their boxes cuz we got bored with CB. Lol. I forgot all about them until I saw the box. I wonder if they still work? 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️.

Wait... no way... Jen, are you really 50, or was Marcel just kidding around when he said that? I'm 50 also (will be 51 in January)... and all this time, since I've been watching you guys, I was under the impression that I was WAY older than you. I had you pegged around late 30s/early 40s. LOL, you're much more adventurous than I am at this age that's for sure. You go girl! Great explore! I've been up through Marlboro, VT a couple times through the years and had no idea that ski area was even there. You guys always manage to find the coolest stuff hidden out in the woods! (And as soon as I saw that tower, I KNEW you were goin' to the top!) Valerie.

Every age is special and holds a chance to make a variety of memories! I don't intend to slow down any time soon and hope that these crazy explores we go on will somehow be my fountain of youth!! Either that or I'm going through a mid life crisis...😂😂😂 This ski area was a real surprise to us as well! We knew we would see a few old buildings, but we had no idea we would see as much as we did. Thank you so much for always making our day with your comments!!
