I don’t think this is quite what you mean but I would want to visit the OG, Detriot-era, Motown studio back when it was actually in use because what better way to ground oneself in “skills matter far more than the equipment one uses so stop making excuses and just make music” than seeing the most successful home studio ever at work

Rockfield. I got to hang out with wasted there when i was sixteen and Paul Chapman introduced me to the rockman. great guys and a dreary but cool studio [ only dreary cos it always rains.] It's Haunted too.

My studio in the 90s had a Sound Workshop 28 channel board (from 1977). It had tape based automation that still worked (with ADATs). It had LED meters (about 10 LEDs per channel), transformers .. great sounding board. Worked great with the ADATs.

@@Producelikeapro I had 5 of them .. with the BRC. I think we were the first studio in Atlanta to be exclusively ADAT. Did a lot of rap and syncing the MPC or SP1200 to the ADAT was a breeze. Also doing tape offsets to fly vocals around was cool. At the time we had just a 4 channel ProTools rig .. so it was easier to move things with offsets. Just needed a little pre-planning when laying out the tracks.

The custom tube mic pre-amp featured at 24:00 was a Jean Christophe Morrison design. JC used to be based in NYC but has been living and working in Sweden for the past decade+.

Cool studio in my home town Brooklyn!!! Seeing a lot of familiar things I have in my studio, the Genelecs, were the first on the list, and a LOT of familiar microphones. I actually have a Neumann U87, several MD 421´s (Best mics for Toms) and I actually bought a pair of 1970´-80´s MD 441´s with the old tuchel connections for 200€. That was a steal. :) And you can´t have enough snares!!! I have 11 of them including a 1978 Ludwig Black Beauty 14 x 6.5 Super Sensitive!!! :)

I hear you on the Peavey controls having weird names. My first amp was the Peavey Rage and two of the controls were 'Supersat' & 'Post'. I also had a 90s era solid-state Fender and one of the controls was 'Contour'.

Before we got this studio - I worked out of my house for 8 years, then a mostly abandoned warehouse with water coming thru the lights and possums in the building (not joking), then a sub-basement of another house. Now this space 11 years later! Keep cooking 🍳

surprisingly well stacked, for such a small space, and you can tell the guy's passionate. it would look 10 times better if they got a broom, though. some people are into that "clean" look - where you're not afraid to sing into the microphone.

The Black Lion FET looked really interesting. Still quite unusual to see a wet/dry knob on hardware. I think we will definitely start seeing it more and more as a new generation of manufacturers come up.

At least this studio had outboard gear that mere mortals can afford. First time I ever recall a studio tour extolling the virtues of ART gear! Usually it’s “yah, we have six Pultec EQs and four vintage Fairchilds in every mix room,” “here’s our eight vintage U87s, each hooked up through a Manley preamp and Massive Passive EQ … or into channel strips scavenged from a Neve console Sinatra used on one of his last albums,” etc.

Wow, a 3630! Legend is right! Legendarily HORRIBLE lol. I had one in the early 2000's and even then we rarely used it unless we wanted to mangle a tone intentionally ;) Apparently there was someone that was modding them though.
