i like this practice method of iai with a partner. gives you a better understanding of how and why these would have been used. it also adds some pressure training as you'll be training "against" someone and not just some imaginary opponent who will do whatever you want at whatever speed you want. pushes you to improve a lot faster. great video

Thank you! Yes, Iai is ultimate technique and need to armorize your body, mind and sword.

I enjoyed seeing these moves again, this time with a partner. You get to see the whole complete kata which is very important if like me, you can only practice alone. It helps to create the spiritual harmony needed when practicing Iaido. Arigato Sensei KAZ 🙏

Thank you for sharing your practice Kazu san🙏 It was always a piint of conflict with my sensei, learning Muso shinden ryu. No partner....you cant learn the mai or timing and better displacement.....so frustrating . I agree with your group about the NEED to practice with an partner. Please make more similar videos . Seeing variations on the responses to certain l8nes of attacks are very important to understand and feel " the right technique" in your muscle memory. Thank you 🙏

I think one of the biggest difficulties found on commencing my Iai journey, was concentrating too much on the required moves and cuts and not visualising an opponent or purpose of a kata. Kenjitsu kumitachi is a great aid for this problem, timing and awareness of distance. This video explains a lot!

It is still a “Dance”. The person being attacked knows exactly how he will be attacked. And a what speed and distance. Therefore, he is already postured mentally before attack begins.

It's more of an exercise... Until it's not. But the thing about training Japanese swordsmanship is that it's never really going to be practical because no one walks around with a katana at the hip ... And it's really hard to spar unless you use a bogu (which effectively can wear down over time and use and are expensive) And then there are many aspects as to bogu sparring what must be followed to be safe... The truth is that it is really hard to spar in a practical way without it being dangerous or expensive. These "dances" replicate an actual scenario where you can safely practice the movement necessary to do these techniques. If it's you versus anyone in this video, my money is they severely hurt you or worse (with blades, bokken or shinai)

Yes! Nobody knows about it in real life 😊 But I believe that practices like this are useful for understanding real "Ma." If you don't think so, that's okay! I appreciate your comment and would love to hear your opinion! Thank you ❤

If you pay attention , they keep playing around the base form of each, probing to find which move feels appropriate and efficient. In european historical fencing as in Iaido and older koryu traditions, the principles stay the same. Take control of the line, use the weak of his blade and gain the crossing. After that it's all open game. From longsword to rapier to even cavalry sabers, the only thing that change is how the weapon is used. Once you can only see the lines of attacks and read the distance and timing perfectly then technique itself becomes almost irrelevant. But you'd need a life dedicated to that daily training to get there😅

Many old ryuha would tell us how samurai trained. We often hear stories passed down from various schools of thought.
