Exploring the "Giant Reverb" and "Four-Delay" Algorithms in the Soma Labs Cosmos

We continue our survey of "anti-looping" with the Soma Cosmos, looking specifically at the Giant Reverb and Four-Delay algorithms. As with all of the Cosmos' modes, they take the premise of live looping, and throw large amounts of non-repetitiveness and unpredictability into the equation. We also continue examining compression, filtering, and Feedback, along with Drift (which, as used here, automates the panning of individual loops), Drive, and Erase.
The music from this video, along with many other Cosmos recordings, can be downloaded in high fidelity at andrelafosse.b...

Hi again Andre. I don't know how I missed this video before seeing your first one (which I left a comment on), but just wanted to thank and commend you for such an exquisite presentation covering more of the Cosmos functionalities - and the amazing sounds you're pulling out of it with your guitar. As a follow-up to my note on the last video, and despite telling myself it might not be a good idea, I went ahead and started experimenting with feeding bits from the Chase Bliss Mood into the Cosmos. Again, absolutely not in the least that the Cosmos needs any kind of "helping" function from any other devices, nevertheless, I quickly found out that this setup can yield some absolutely, insanely awesome textures. Feeding and/or overdubbing a modulated micro-loop from the Mood into the longer delay lines of the Cosmos quickly took me to some strange but very appealing parallel galaxies, LOL. Noting that this is, for me, more for future consideration than anything, I'll no doubt now redouble my focus on just learning and understanding the Cosmos by itself, and will then look forward to coming back later with an interest in combining the Cosmos with Mood, Blooper, my MEL-9 mellotron pedal, and one or two other goodies. I'm feeling like the possibilities with this kit are literally infinite - as you've already shown in your videos. Thanks again! Frank

Thanks again! Personally, I don't think there's any "required order" that we approach this stuff in. Plenty of people start with new effects by putting into an ecosystem with several other pieces of gear, and I don't think that's a fundamentally bad way of going about it. My own personal preference tends to be looking at less stuff, in more detail. But, like any other choice we make, there will be some advantages and disadvantages to doing things that way. I think it's good to experiment with different approaches... but also, to give ourselves permission to follow our instincts on this stuff, and approach it from whatever angles are the most intriguing. :)

@@andrelafosse I think your less is more approach makes total sense, and I'm going to try to do the same when it comes to the learning curve, at least initially. Thanks again Andre!

So, I picked one of these up last week. Surprisingly, the "reverb" algorhythms are my favourites. Even with Blur and Drift having no effect, it really is something magical. You tend to run it dry (probably intentional for these videos), but I've been having lots of fun running my pedal board through it via the aux send/return of my mixer. A heavy fuzz through this sounds incredible. It's going to take a while to wrap my head around all functions, but it sure is fun figuring it out.

Sounds great! I'm a dry guy in general, and it's pretty rare that I'm using more than two or three devices at a time. But I'm sure sending more complex sounds into it gives some great results, too. :)

Yes another epic video - I just love these massive cinematic washes in the 'Reverb' algorithms....just stunning and almost euphoric.....great job, as per usual.......I'm not sure what's going on - the after 12:00, it really sounds like the overall pitch is affected.......everything sounds quite a few cents flat.....I think this is the first video I've seen which really touches on the DRIVE feature....the build up of aliasing noise at the end is really interesting - kind of like some Granular activity........
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse 2 года назад
Thanks Will! Definitely some odd intonation stuff happening - I think one of the strings got progressively funkier as the performance went on. But, as is sometimes the case with these sorts of looping voyages, I opted to roll with it, and pretend I was doing a My Bloody Valentine/Sonic Youth thing. ;) My natural inclination is to prefer the firmwares where pitch replaces the drive knob, but drive can definitely get to some cool places. (I actually have a feeling that, between drive, compression, and feedback higher than 100%, the Cosmos could make one hell of a good noise/industrial tool...)

I'm curious to see if Vlad and the crew add any additional features in further firmware options. I love unit, but suspect that it could become even more diverse in it's potential with a few tweaks. Esp. the reverb. I always use an external stereo unit, but I can see a reverb update being really helpful for all of us who are really unto the Ambient thing. I would be a really great, all-in-one box. I hear you about the tuning thing - best to just go with it ------- I can't imagine that any little pitch issues would be a problem for any viewers. I just mentioned it, because I wanted to understand for certain that it was likely do to the INPUT, and not any internal processing.........It's a great upload, and make me even more curious to explore the unit in greater depth, as you have.......

Andre it’s not your funky strings but Cosmos drifts in longer settings .. passing the loop 10+ flatten the sound by 10-20 cents

Lovely sounds! Is there any software app or vst that can create similar beautifully degrading soundscapes?, The Soma Cosmos is practically impossible to order and there's a long waiting list, also, I'm glad you're showing more different and newer devices, I've been following your work for a long time and your EDP tutorials are legendary, glad you're expanding to other gear too, cheers!

Thanks so much for tuning in, and for such a long time! Greatly appreciated. For whatever reason, this has felt like a good moment to explore the world outside the EDP, and I'm glad it's translating to the world outside my own head. :) Valhalla Delay and Valhalla Supermassive (the latter of which is freeware) have a number of options for diffusion delays that gradually melt into big reverbs, similar to the Cosmos' Giant Reverb algorithms. Valhalla Delay also lets you tweak the gradual degradation/erosion of the sound as it repeats. (Supermassive may do this too, but I haven't explored that aspect of it as deeply.) Two instances of those plugins, set to different lengths, being fed by the same live input signal, could probably get you into the Giant Reverb ballpark.

Andre, the giant reverb algorithms have what I think it's an issue but it's recognised by Soma in their forum as a side-effect of how the algorithm works, which is that it drifts in pitch after a few minutes, making long live ambient looping very difficult if not impossible with that algorithm (it can drift as much as 50 cents after, say 5 mins). I'm very curious about how do you handle that. I can see that you lower the feedback after some time so that old buffer contents fade away, which would avoid it. Do you consciously do it to avoid that issue or just because what you're playing is asking for space? Have you encountered yourself in the situation in which the reverb is already sounding out of tune? I'm trying to work around this myself as I love the reverb algos, I think they are truly magical, but that problem made me almost never use them, not as much as I would like.

Hi Andre! Great videos, they really show the potential of the Cosmos and the guitar i didn't get in a first istance by other vids. May i ask you if when you close the loop (stop recording) and then you change algorithm, the loop change like when you're on recording?
@andrelafosse
@andrelafosse 2 года назад
Thanks for tuning in! Basically, you can create a loop in any algorithm, and switch to or from any algorithm and retain the audio. Some of the algorithms will "destructively" change the sound (like the Giant Reverbs), others only modify the playback (the granular modes). Is that what you're asking?
