In this video, follow a group of University of Arizona geology graduate students as they explore the largest lava tube on Earth, located on the Big Island of Hawaii. We also grab some lunch, see some Hawaiian waterfalls, and have a barbeque. Behind the scenes look at a field trip for UA’s “Chemical Evolution of the Earth” graduate course, taught by Professor Mihai Ducea.
*All students on this trip were fully vaccinated and tested negative for COVID-19 prior to the trip*

I would probably be shaking if I was crawling through that haha, but so amazed at the same time, Few questions: What causes the black stalactites and stalagmites? I wouldn't think they could be basaltic right? What made you guys go to Hawaii to see it? Oh and btw, I think I am gonna push for a research role down the road! I think it would be so cool to be a scientist and really get out there, got to say your part of that inspiration lol How's your studies coming?

Those things that look remarkably similar to stalactites are actually basaltic drips (lavacicles). They form in a fashion similar to icicles when the lava level drops within a tube (i.e. lava froth dripping off ceiling of tube). This trip was for a graduate course at UA called "Chemical Evolution of the Earth". We've been discussing mantle reservoirs, plumes, etc. so there is really no better place to go explore than Hawaii (since it is a widely accepted example of "hotspot" magmatism). That is cool to hear that you are leaning towards geoscience research--it is an amazing field. Studies are going well, back on the mainland now--time to get some work done! Thanks for watching.

@@cadenhowlett That's sounds sick! Very cool man, is this trip something the university partially funds for graduate research? Best of luck man!

@@happytrails5342 yeah, some funding within the department of geosciences. We primarily do field trips in the western US.

@@cadenhowlett Got it, very cool! I am currently in Colorado, getting through my second year of undergrad, sedimentary geology/strat is complex but fun! Taking minerology next semester Will almost certainly be going to CU Boulder for my postgraduate studies, just so excited and anxious to get through these next 2 and a half years
